LAK Fiala
I pretty much called this in early April <a href="https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/574675?post_id=3141609">"Fiala's worth is a ~20th overall plus a B+ prospect."</a> and <a href="https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/573914?post_id=3134535">here</a>.
Minnesota fans must be disappointed from the comments I received on those posts. At least Faber is a local kid. I also wouldn't be surprised to see them flip the 19th pick + to get a player that can help them now on a team friendly deal.

This trade is bad value anyhow - Puljujarvi has more value that a 1-year rental of the small, soft Connor Brown who disappears in the playoffs.</div></div>
Bad value? Maybe for Ottawa. Brown has hit 20 goals twice in his career and the last 3 years has played at a 50 point pace the last 3 years. The best Puljijarvi has paced was 45 this year and has never scored more then 15. And how much of that time was playing with McJesus?
Small and soft? Seriously? The guy broke his jaw in warm up after taking a puck to the face and still played the game and scored. He's also the main PK player on the 13th ranked PK.
Disappears in the playoffs? Right, because he has had so much opportunity to play in the playoffs the last 3 years for your analysis. Maybe take a look at the 16 points in 10 games he put up with Team Canada for the World Cup gold medal where he assisted on the OT goal in the gold medal game.
I wouldn't do the trade 1 for 1 let alone adding picks.

Fitting Them All Under the Cap
I've been looking at how they'd make this work as well, the problem isn't the year above, it's the year after this as Sanderson is up and hopefully he'll be demanding a 5+M ticket (meaning he's played well). If the cap only jumps $1M per year and Sanderson needs another 4-6M, maybe more, who knows, then it gets tricky.
You can free up some money if you buy out White this current off season, that will save you just shy of 1M, and if you can find a dance partner to trade him without retention then you can free up a bit more. Bobby Ryan's buy out comes off the books after the above (the 23-24) season, so there's another 1.8M. Then the hope is that the cap jumps quite a bit after the players pay back the owners. All this is for nothing if the Sens aren't willing to spend to the cap though.

Just Stay the Course and Keep it Simple Stupid
If we started the year with this roster I'd be more then happy, swapping Brannstrom with Sanderson.
Addition by subtraction by getting rid of Zaitsev, and the money looks close on Norris and Giroux. I wouldn't be upset if they gave Formenton and Joseph a couple more years if it's reasonable $$. I think Lassi will be ready to make the step next season.
I really liked Kastelic's and Kelly's game towards the end of the season, that should be a more then capable 4th line.
If would assume Sanderson will be in place of Brannstrom, dropping Branny on the depth chart to 3rd pair but I could see him being dealt this summer. He doesn't seem to have a fit within the roster. I wouldn't want him with Lassi as I think Lassi needs an experienced veteran like Holden to help him out. Not sure where he fits to be honest.
My hope is they don't overspend for Fiala, I really wasn't impressed by his playoff performance and signing a guy after a career year is always risky.

Yeah, I'd rather keep Formenton to be honest, he's just starting to come into his own. I know we'd have to give up a bit for him but I'm not that high on Fiala. He's not exactly lighting it up in the playoffs.

Fiala and Giroux straight to the playoffs
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NDoody</b></div><div>That's a huge no for me Bob.
1 - I'm not passing on the First this season even at 7, lots of good players available.
2 - If you give Fiala 8 and Giroux 7 with the term you got there and get lucky enough to get Norris at 8 (I think he gets more) is no way in hell your gonna be able to sign Stutzle & Sanderson long term alone and the raise that Zub needs, plus potentially another #1 goalie if Forsberg doesn't fill that role by next season, and the other prospects coming.</div></div>
It can work, I just don't think Dorion has the balls to do it.
2023-2024 Hammer, Watty, Holden and DelZotto come off the books for $7.8M, add $1M cap increase (could be more). Then the cap space that's already there, $11M, so you have $19.8M in cap space.
- Stuey gets a $7.5M raise ($8.5M salary)
- Zub gets a $2.5M raise (that's on the high end)
- Kasty gets a $500K raise ($1.4M salary)
- Replace Hammer by JBD at $1M
- Greig replaces Watty at $1M (not ideal to have him on the 4th line but injuries etc. can change that)
- Pinto signs a bridge for 2 years (when Giroux is done) for a $2.5M raise ($3.5M salary)
- Give Gus $1M raise if he plays decent ($1.7M salary)
- Sign Holden to 1 yr $1M or another depth D for this
Total signings of $17M
After all that and you have >$2.8M in cap space for 2022-2023.
Gets tricky with Sandy and Lassi expiring in the next year but could work if the cap bumps up a bit as it's reported that the players will have paid their debt to the owners by the end of the 23-24 season. Also would work if Giroux takes a 2 year deal, maybe at 8M. It's more then I would want to give him but might convince him to pay Ontario taxes after seeing his FLA pay cheques.

Fiala and Giroux
I think you are pretty much bang on in all of those contracts. I might only do 3 years on Giroux but if 4 is what it takes to get the deal done, I'd be ok with it.
My only worry in getting both is that the following year Stutzle, Zub and Pinto are going to be up for new contracts, probably looking at an increase of roughly $11M, 7 for Tim, 2 for Zub and 2 for Pinto (I am assuming he'll sign a bridge as he's been injured). Only Hammer's 3M and Delzotto's 2M are coming off the books of any value (Holden is there for 1.3 but will need a replacement for him).
The only way it would work is if they found a way to get out from Murray that would give you total of 6.25 + 3 + 2 = 11.25 with the same buffer in cap space 4.3M (add 1M to take into account a slight increase in the overall salary cap).
Overall I'd be more then happy if they were able to do that and I'd put this line up against any in the league. The scoring across the top 2, speed of the 3rd and grit of that 4th line. Defence has some inexperience but Thomson looked good in his audition and Sanderson should hit the ground running.

Ottawa is a better team when Zaitsev does not play. Ottawa also operates on an internal cap and they are not in a financial position to bury $4M in the minors. If it costs a second round pick to rid themselves of Zaitsev and gives them the ability to acquire an impact player via trade or free agency it needs to happen.

I don't disagree but it looks like if the trade is made prior to July 1 or whichever date the "new year" rolls over this year, he does not have trade protection.
If I were the Sens I would inquire on Scheif. Not that there is a need for center but he's the better player between the two, from Ontario, manageable cap hit and salary, no signing bonus. No doubt would cost more but he plays with and edge and is younger. Scheifele does have a 10 team no trade list, would be interesting to see if Ottawa is on it.

He doesn't have to be traded, at least bury him in the minors until we need the cap space.</div></div>
I agree with you that if Zaitsev is on the roster opening night Dorion should be packing his bags.
I disagree with him being in the minors though because in order for the Sens to sign a "quality veteran" they need to shed cap. They obviously operate on an internal cap so getting rid of Zaitsev's money is imperative. A Zaitsev trade should be Dorion's top priority this off season. It is addition by subtraction. If it takes some draft capital, so be it.
He did also mention that buy outs aren't off the table which might spell the end of White with the Sens as well.

I get it, Wild fans love him. He's a really good player but reality is a different beast. We all want top value for our players on these make believe trades but that isn't real life. See the most recent example, the Eichel trade. Sabes fans wanted 4 1st round picks for the guy, they got one 1 first, Krebs, Tuch and a second round pick. And the 1st round pick will be around 15, maybe later if Vegas makes the playoffs. At the time of the trade, I bet Buffalo was expecting it to be later.
I said this in another thread, Fiala's value is very similar to Reinhart before his trade to Florida. And looking back, the JT Miller to Van, Duchene to Colombus, Trouba to NYR, Toffoli to Vancouver, Toffoli to Calgary were all similarly structured as well. Not one of those trades did the team receiving the player cough up higher than a 20th overall pick.

I'm not sure what fair trade would be, but a team in Ottawa's position should be looking for the player that can make an impact sooner than later and those are typically found in the top of the first round. Ottawa has quantity, lots of young guys coming up, they need quality.

JT Miller to Vancouver, Duchene to Colombus, Trouba to NYR, Toffoli to Vancouver, Toffoli to Calgary. None of these are exact comparables but this is just a few. The base for these trades are a late, 20+ first, rounder and a B+ prospect at the time.
Not to say Fiala won't get more but don't get your hopes up. Look at what Buffalo fans had Eichel going for on here prior to his trade and look at that he went for.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Xspyrit</b></div><div>Yes but it's in 1 year only, wherever the pick ends up, it's an asset Guerin would be able to trade if needed. And while the Sens should improve significantly next season (particularly if healthy), that pick will most likely be top-20 (in a great draft). Keep in mind the division the Sens play in, by far the best (IMO)
Wonder if the OP would take the 2022 1st round pick (Top-10 protected) instead? Because I'd do that easily</div></div>
Any Fiala deal needs to look no further then the Florida-Buffalo trade for Reinhart. The Reinhart return was a good prospect, Devon Levi, not Florida's top prospect, Spencer Knight, and a conditional 2022 1st rounder from Florida (top 10 protected). This is a Florida pick, who picked 24th overall the day before this trade went down. This pick is looking like it's going to be the same or higher this year. This isn't a lottery team in the bottom of the standings that could be in the bottom of the standings next year as well, in line for another lottery pick. There was literally zero chance that the pick included in this trade was going to be a lottery pick. It is also worth noting that Reinhart and Fiala are statistically very similar in point production, with the slight edge to Fiala, however Reinhart was playing on a tire fire of a team and Reinhart is a Centre which historically holds more value in a trade.
So, in my opinion, if the Sens are going after Fiala, maybe a guy like Jarvinte or Sokolov and possibly two 2nd round picks, the Ottawa 2022 and 2023 or the Tampa 2022 pick. The Ottawa 2022 2nd round pick will be in the ~38th overall range so, value wise, they only need to make up around 10-15 positions in the draft.
It's not something that the Minnesota fanbase wants to hear but regardless of which team trades for Fiala, if he does get dealt, you are most likely getting a high B prospect and a late first round pick or a combination of picks of that value.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Borocop</b></div><div>sens should just buy out white instead, super cheap to do so</div></div>
I agree, these last 30 some games are his audition. With Norris, Stutzle and Pinto as the 1,2,3 C penciled in for next year, it's going to be tough for him to break the roster and you can't run a $4M centre on the 4th line. He might be battling for a 3rd line winger spot, but those are Brown and Paul's spots to lose. I don't see them trading Paul after getting that charity all set up for him although it would be an Ottawa thing to do (see Turris, Duch, Karl).
It's unfortunate for White, he's a great locker room guy, a glue guy and it's absolutely hilarious to listen to his pressers, he's just making 1.5M too much if he can't return to form. And if it doesn't work out, buy out is the way to go, it's cheap and you don't have to pay to get rid of him.
