New York Islanders signed Hudson Fasching (1 Year / $750,000 AAV)
My theory is that he likely makes the signings privately earlier but only announces them later.
As for the “why”, I think in a cap world, with many teams up against the cap and making moves, not letting other teams know your full picture in terms of cap could be advantageous. For example if a team wanted to trade a player for a bit of cap relief, if they were up against the cap it would provide leverage to the team they’re looking to trade with.
If not for that reason, I can’t figure out why it always comes out at once. To make it newsworthy? Cuz why else would we be commenting on a Hudson Fasching signing?! 😂

Except if they hit those performance bonuses, that will be an indication that the Isles were a top team and likely making a deep run.

Question Marks
1. I can't believe they haven't made any trades. I mean, ok you want to keep cap space for UFAs and trades post-draft but they don't have a lot of quality assets, neither picks to complete trades.
2. I can't believe they take Geekie over Bean without any assets given by the canes.
3. I don't understant Brandon Tanev's selection. I mean this guy is almost a cap dump. Yeah he's a good grit player, but they already hace Donskoi, Gourde, Bastian, MacDermid for this. IMO if they wanted to stick with cap savings, ZAR would've been a better pick.
4. I don't know much about John Quenneville but I'm pretty sure Gaudette/Zadorov would've been good value assets for picks at least if you don't want them in your roster.
5. I don't know much about Twarynsky, Quenneville, Bayreuther and True, can't argue about it, but they are surprising picks for sure.

Question Marks
Quenneville and Bayreuther are pending UFAs, so they basically just passed on picking anybody from Chicago or Columbus. (If they were going to sign them, they would have done so before the expansion draft.) Hard to believe there wasn't one available player on those teams that they could have flipped to someone else for a 3rd to 5th round draft pick (Zadorov and Domi?). It's like they don't want to trade with anybody. Instead of accumulating tradeable assets, they seem to have just gone fishing to try to find the next William Karlsson. The defense looks pretty solid though. They could definitely trade a couple of defensemen and still have enough depth at that position to start the season. I think they'll be ok in goal too. We haven't seen Driedger or Vanacek in a true #1 role yet, but they've both shown enough for me to think that they could at least form a solid tandem.
I too was amazed that they took Geekie over Bean. The only reason I can think of is the uncertainty of Bean not being signed. Maybe they talked to him and he wanted too much. Carolina seemed to think so.

Philadelphia Flyers signed Samuel Morin (1 Year / $750,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Roysboy72</b></div><div>Things don’t look too good for Morin. Former 13th overall pick and he still hasn’t had a salary as high as his entry-level deal.</div></div>
True (tho he did go 11th in 2013). That said, he’s still with the team that drafted him. The only other 2013 1st rounders still with their drafted teams (tho this may soon change) are:
MacKinnon - COL (#1)
Barkov - FLA (#2)
Monahan - CGY (#6)
Nurse - EDM (#7)
Hotvat - VAN (#9)
Morin - PHI (#11)
Morrissey - WPG (#13)
Pulock - NYI (#15)
Usually, by 8 years, 1st rounders are either:
a) established with the team that drafted them (a la Barkov)
b) established on another team, after bringing in a haul in a trade (a la Seth Jones)
c) no longer on NHL contract/in Europe (a la
Kerby Rychal)
Morin is the exception and sorta feels like the 40-year-old-virgin version of a hockey prospect.
Edit: added Horvat; subbed Dickinson

So Montreal effectively turns a 2020 4th into a 2020 2nd and potentially a 2021 4th. LMAO, brilliant asset management.
Montreal gets a better return for Scandella, even after trading him with 20 less games left in the season than when Buffalo traded him.
TL: DR; Jason Boterill looks like a moron

I feel like ANA paid for the man more than the hockey player. He will bring pride to the team even if in those two years, ANA might not compete to reach playoffs.
He's a man really loved by his coach and by fans. The 2nd year is easy to swallow.
edit : We can add that ANA traded for him this summer (4th rd!) so they really like him there

Hey Pat, you have a good point. Can't say for sure but it might come down to the following:
* Entry-level politics and not wanting to burn a year of FA on Lauzon?
* Cliffy seems to have regressed yeah but he was good late last year, so when healthy, I think Butch might want to see that again?
* Lately, I think Moore has been a bit better and his recent minutes may be as a showcase for trade or as a trade piece?
Cheers

(TOR/LAK) - Moore, 2020 3rd round pick, Conditionial 2021 3rd round pick for Campbell, Clifford
This is a good trade for both teams. Toronto gets the backup goalie upgrade on Hutchinson they need plus some real grit from a character player who gives as much in the 59th minute as in the first, which is not always a characteristic of the Maple Leafs. LA gets another third that they may be able to pair with their own and upgrade to a second, plus a good, fast, young forward from the neighborhood, plus a potential second. I can't wait to see how this trade turns out. When Campbell wins his 6th game I hope everyone in the respective fanbases will be as ecstatic as me!
