Since the pandemic he's been in the lineup for 50% of total games. That's pretty injury prone.

Changing my tune again
Too heavy on the Bertuzzi package and too light on the Domi deal.
Bertuzzi's value is tough to assess because he's missed a ton of time this year and been kind of mediocre when he's been on the ice. Trading for him is a pure upside play, and I don't think you overpay for that type of move. I wouldn't offer much more than a 3rd & a B-tier prospect for him at full freight; if Detroit thinks it's not enough, well then let them figure out what they're gonna do with a pending UFA that's seen their trade value tank this year.
Domi, even without retention, would get better than this. It's a 3rd rounder, a 26-year-old AHL/NHL tweener, and a pending UFA in Kerfoot that would have minimal value for Chicago. I think you have to start the conversation at a 2nd and a good prospect for Chicago to get on the phone here - I personally have questions about his value, but he's scoring at a 60 point pace on a team with very little talent so Chicago has every right to push for a strong return there.

Shoring up Defense for the Playoffs
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Orango</b></div><div>The reason the Leafs wouldn't trade those players for picks themselves is it would leave a void in their lineup without a player to replace them (such as Domi & McCabe).
What if the trade was:
Max Domi (full price)
Jake McCabe ($2 million retained)
for
Nick Abruzzese
Justin Holl
Alexander Kerfoot
Nicholas Robertson
2023 3rd round pick (OTT)
2024 1st round pick (TOR)
and maybe even add the 2023 3rd round pick (TOR) as well if needed</div></div>
LOL. I almost typed "don't add Robertson" in my last response. There's probably no one on this site who has less interest in Robertson than me. He's undersized, injury prone, and I think overrated. He's just another throw in in my opinion. He may pan out over time (I hope he proves me wrong) but I feel like he ends up being a career AHL'er. I actually think the smart move for Toronto would be to hang on to him and let him play next season for the Marlies to rehabilitate his value.
The offer with no retention on Domi, and Robertson and the other 2023 3rd added is probably fair value (Leafs fans will say it's a huge overpay). <strong>I'd make that trade.</strong> I'm just not sure if Hawks GM Kyle Davidson retains on McCabe without getting a '23 1st back. That's the only thing that might hang up this deal.
Great discussion! Appreciate your insights. Wish there was more of this on this site!

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Orango</b></div><div>So what you are saying is you sign Bertuzzi to a contract and then immediately trade him to Toronto? When they can just sign him as a UFA if they wanted him.
If that trade was supposed to be during the 2023 trade deadline, then Toronto both could not afford him, and most likely wouldn't want him in the first place (especially with having to give up Minten). Bertuzzi rubbed a lot of Canadians the wrong way when he refused to get vaccinated, then could not travel to Canada, and then bad-mouthed our government. Plus it would always run the risk for Toronto if there was hypothetically another semi-lockdown, Bertuzzi could not play for them.</div></div>
forget about all that political garbage, won't get into that debate, but the guy has been healthy in just 50.5% of Detroits games in the last 3 seasons and has 5 points in 17 games this season. No thanks to this deal.

Yeah, no way Minten is included in any deal for bertuzzi. And makes zero sense to sign him before trading him anyway

Genuine question, would you rather have Chych at 4.6M for 3 years or Sandin at 1.4M for one more year then ~4M for 6+ years

I left him off the roster because he is currently under contract with a team in Switzerland, so under the rules I made for myself, that automatically disqualified him.
I would have loved to have had Tyler Bozak at 3C or 4C so I could move Verhaeghe to a top 6 LW spot as well, but I didn't include any FA or anyone not under an NHL contract for the 2022-2023 season.

Just Retire Jake
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MatthewsFan</b></div><div>I should have used better context with those numbers.
Last Muzzin had 35 games missed. The previous season Muzzin missed just 3 but was notably playing hurt throughout the final games and the playoffs, the previous year Muzzin missed 17 out of 70 games. Also having two concussions back to back last year and getting injured in the CLB (play-in series) and MTL playoffs plays into this. He is not dependable and at a high cap it, sucks.</div></div>
We Leaf fans can agree to disagree on an individual player’s worth; I like muzzin (he brings a unique skill set to our d corps) but agree his health issues are a concern. But Another way to look at it is - he ain’t going anywhere (certainly this year), so building a team without him is kind of pie in the sky.

53 two years ago was all but 3 games. That is pretty close to a full season. When he was traded to TO he played 80 games that season. Prior to coming here he played over 70 games for several seasons in a row. His first full season in TO both him and Rielly missed significant time. Then he played all but 3 games and then last season had the concussions. To say he's always hurt is a big stretch

Yandle did not leave 11.2m on the table. He hung them up as didn't receive a contract offer.
Cap wise, I'll agree with you, Leafs would benefit Muzzin would be on LTIR for two years. But LTIR is not a get outta cap hell ticket. Muzzin sure looked healthy in the playoffs, might have been the Leafs best Dman.

Start of a new jets era
Avs won't be able to retain Scheifele, so there's no way they are going to trade for him. It looks like they will just try Newhook in the 2C role, and maybe they will try to acquire someone later in the season if he's not ready.
Pens aren't trading Kapanen, and I would be if anyone trades for Wheeler this season.

The rebuild part 1
Big issue im having is Monahan hasnt played at a .5ppg in a while and even if he does that doesnt get you a prospect + 2nd. Maybe a 3rd ? Anderson hasnt been great either. in his last 121gp he has 56p... .46ppg. explain why a team would give up a 1st + 2 prospects for such a lackluster player? I'd argue Anderson is one more average season away from being a cap dump / negative contract based off production / $$

<a href="/users/justaboss" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@justaboss</a> thanks for posting this. I love seeing other fans take time and effort into a Habs trade thread. I dont agree with all your takes but I enjoyed taking a study break and reading through your thoughts. All in all, I wouldn't be disappointed if this is how the year went down though I would hope Dadanov, Monahan and Drouin have big years and can fetch stronger returns.

TDL If Weegar Signs Extension with Flames
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Orango</b></div><div>Zadorov has played over half his games throughout his career on the right side. And I agree Tanev is an amazing player (I am a canucks fan lol), I just thought it was a way for both Toronto and Calgary to improve a somewhat weaker area by dealing from a position of strength.
Calgary is very strong on RD, so they deal to improve in a somewhat weaker area, their top 9 wingers.
Toronto is very strong on top 9 wingers, so they deal to improve in a weaker area, their RD.</div></div>
Yeah he was forced to play right side as a depth defenseman on other teams and he was relatively ineffective on those teams outside of hits. In Calgary he's played exclusively LD and have been quite effective there (though I think he learned and improved a lot under Sutter).
Calgary is very strong at Right handed Defense depth, but as stated before Weegar has played almost exclusively LD the last 3 years (except for when Ekblad was hurt). As a Canucks fan you should understand the pain of what it was like when Tanev got injured. Weegar at least provides support there and Kylington can always jump back in to a top 4 role.
As for Toronto they really arent as strong up front on the wing as you make them out to be and their d-core is very good too.
Overall this is just poor asset management by the Flames if they are trying to push for a cup, being one of the like 7-8playoff teams that can actually accrue a relevant amount of cap space this year for a big deadline add they are far better off trading futures for a big fish than a core player

If Holl is waived and not picked up, Toronto still has to carry roughly half his cap hit. They would not be cap compliant with a 20 man roster. Ritzy is right, just not possible this year.
