Changing my tune again
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Juice</b></div><div>Domi also has a track record of being relatively useless, production wise...especially in a bottom 6 role. Bottom line is that I don't think swapping him for Kerfoot +++ is logical given it's debatable he'll have a bigger impact than kerfoot in a similar role.
And if Matthews or Tavares go down and we need a C to fill in that role, we're likely on our way out of the 1st round anyway as Domi playing 2C isn't very inspiring.
I'd take Domi...just not for anywhere near that ask</div></div>
I agree with some of your points. First of all I wouldn't have him in a bottom 6 role, but rather in the top 6 playing on the LW (I wouldn't do that Bertuzzi trade ever).
And I agree if Matthew or Tavares go down in the playoffs the Leafs are in trouble, I mean more for the regular season to make sure we keep home ice advantage on Tampa.
I personally would do that trade, but I understand your reasoning for not.

Changing my tune again
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Juice</b></div><div>I know I'm probably in the minority here...but I'd rather have Kerfoot over Domi. I don't think many leaf fans have been watching Max the past few years and are going off of memories of what he was supposed to be.
In the past two seasons, one player has 21 blocks and 35 hits while the other has 93 blocks and 105 hits. The one with the higher "grit" stats is logging 4min less ice time per game. That player is also currently on the leafs roster.
Yes, Domi plays the agitator role and is producing better this year playing on the top line...but unless coming to Toronto turns him into his father's playing profile, I wouldn't be giving up anything of quality to get him</div></div>
The thing about Kerfoot is while those defensive numbers are higher than Domi's because of his pk role, he's arguably the 4th best pker on the Leafs (behind Kampf, Marner, and Aston-Reese, and in my opinion only marginally above Jarkrok). Domi is more effective in the offensive zone, and as you said getting under the other teams skin (which is an important trait to have in the playoffs).
What does it most for me is the center option. Right now when Matthews was out Kerfoot could not play up in the lineup to cover the position well, but Domi has a track record of being both a good winger and center.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MaxBorjshlapsky</b></div><div>Thank you second time I forgot amirov is going through cancer treatment so I switched that trade up.
The assessment of Domi requiring a second and a prospect or maybe a young guy that can play right away I definitely agree with, Ottawa's 3rd is pretty close to a second I seen acgm's offering 4th-7th rounds so I beat them but I'd give that up for Domi no question.</div></div>
If you wanted the Domi trade to happen with Chicago taking Kerfoot back, it would probably have to look like:
Chicago:
Max Domi
Toronto:
Alex Kerfoot
Nick Abruzzese (Apparently Chicago is very high on this guy)
2023 3rd round pick (OTT)
2024 5th round pick (TOR)
I think if you offered that it could get done.

The Leafs would not make any of those trades. They'd be cleaning out the cupboards of almost all of their young guys for not a whole lot in return. There are cheaper deals that can be made that would make much more sense for them.

Shoring up Defense for the Playoffs
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hawksguy81</b></div><div>LOL. I almost typed "don't add Robertson" in my last response. There's probably no one on this site who has less interest in Robertson than me. He's undersized, injury prone, and I think overrated. He's just another throw in in my opinion. He may pan out over time (I hope he proves me wrong) but I feel like he ends up being a career AHL'er. I actually think the smart move for Toronto would be to hang on to him and let him play next season for the Marlies to rehabilitate his value.
The offer with no retention on Domi, and Robertson and the other 2023 3rd added is probably fair value (Leafs fans will say it's a huge overpay). <strong>I'd make that trade.</strong> I'm just not sure if Hawks GM Kyle Davidson retains on McCabe without getting a '23 1st back. That's the only thing that might hang up this deal.
Great discussion! Appreciate your insights. Wish there was more of this on this site!</div></div>
Thank you very much, glad to have the discussion and the feedback on my post :)

Shoring up Defense for the Playoffs
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hawksguy81</b></div><div>The two picks the Hawks would want with retention on both McCabe and Domi as proposed in the trade are both in the AZ deal for Chych. The '23 1st and the '24 2nd. I'm not sure how to rework the deal without those two picks. I just don't think it gets done at all. Maybe Knies instead of Abruzzese? But I'm guessing that doesn't fly for the Leafs.
If Kerfoot and Holl are worth a 3rd or 4th with no retention, why wouldn't the Leafs just trade them and keep those picks? That seems like poor asset management.</div></div>
The reason the Leafs wouldn't trade those players for picks themselves is it would leave a void in their lineup without a player to replace them (such as Domi & McCabe).
What if the trade was:
Max Domi (full price)
Jake McCabe ($2 million retained)
for
Nick Abruzzese
Justin Holl
Alexander Kerfoot
Nicholas Robertson
2023 3rd round pick (OTT)
2024 1st round pick (TOR)
and maybe even add the 2023 3rd round pick (TOR) as well if needed

They only have one retention slot left. And what if Toews or Kane asks for a trade. Hawks will have to retain on them in any trade. Yes, they are willing to take on cap dumps provided the deals make sense for Chicago's rebuild. Hawks would take on Kerfoot and Holl if they get their asking price for McCabe and Domi.</div></div>
I'm saying they could retain, I still think you can move both of them without the need to retain. I think you could still get a 3rd or 4th without the need for retention.
And i'm sure the deal could be done without retaining on one of Domi or McCabe, it was just a thought. How would you make the deal fair then?

Cozens
Honestly Buffalo's Centre depth with just Thompson and Cozens alone is scary good for the value. Those contracts will be considered two of the best deals in the league over the next several years. I have a feeling in a year or two there will be talk of both being worth over $10 million (that is if Thompson is not already there).

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hawksguy81</b></div><div>Hawks probably decline. The only reason they retain on McCabe this season is to get back a 2023 1st. And a 2023 3rd and Abruzzese for Domi half retained probably gets beat by another offer as well. Kerfoot and Holl are both cap dumps as far as Chicago is concerned. Without retention, they'll be difficult to move to any of the teams competing for playoffs spots. Most have very little cap space.</div></div>
Hawks don't care about cap dumps or needing to retain to deal Kerfoot or Holl in later trades. The Hawks are one of the richest teams in the league, who have gone on record saying they are willing to take cap dumps from other teams.
If they retain $1 million on each Kerfoot and Holl, they can definitely get at least a 3rd round pick for each of them.

Depends. If I want to win in the next 2 years I would want Chychrun, as he is the better player right now. Beyond that, I would prefer Sandin, as I think he has a very high ceiling, and could become just as good, if not better than Chychrun. But since the Leafs want to win now, the trade makes sense for them.

Red Wings 2023-24 Opening Night
So what you are saying is you sign Bertuzzi to a contract and then immediately trade him to Toronto? When they can just sign him as a UFA if they wanted him.
If that trade was supposed to be during the 2023 trade deadline, then Toronto both could not afford him, and most likely wouldn't want him in the first place (especially with having to give up Minten). Bertuzzi rubbed a lot of Canadians the wrong way when he refused to get vaccinated, then could not travel to Canada, and then bad-mouthed our government. Plus it would always run the risk for Toronto if there was hypothetically another semi-lockdown, Bertuzzi could not play for them.

1) I honestly don't think Toews gets you that much, especially if you don't cover 50% of his salary
2) Edmonton can't afford Kane at 33% retained. They will need at least 60% covered (50 from Chicago, the rest from another team) in order to fit him under the cap based on their cap situation now if the season plays out as expected (no major injuries, etc.)
3) If that's all you're able to get for Domi, then he must have had a terrible season
4) Valimaki will cost a lot more than a 3rd to aquire

Season Opener
1) Sandin won't sign for that cheap. He wants over $2 million per. I honestly don't think he signs by the start of the season, and we see Mete playing on the third pair to start the season with Liljegren out, as Mete has looked pretty good in the preseason so far
2) Muzzin will be ready for the start of the season
3) I think Robertson will start the season in the AHL. He's had a lot of injuries and needs more time to get his game going. I do believe he will get called up at some point this season, and may very well play the majority of the season in the NHL, but for now its the minors
4) I believe with Tavares out the second line spot will be Malgin's to lose. He's shown some good chemistry with Nylander in limited action, and the reason he signed with the Leafs was because he was promised to be given a look in the top 9. I don't know if he holds that spot there for the remainder of the season, but I think he'll start there for game 1
The Lineup I think will be:
Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Nylander - Kerfoot - Malgin
Engvall - Kampf - Jarnkrok
Simmonds - Gaudette - Abue-Kubel
Rielly - Brodie
Muzzin - Holl
Giordano - Mete

Agree completely. When Healthy Muzzin is still very good. Also the only defender the Leafs currently have that could fill Muzzin's role is Brodie. and if Brodie is playing the shutdown role. that leaves a big hole on Rielly's side.

Scheifele is not what the Avs need at all. They already have a dynamic scoring winger (and one of the best in the league at it) in MacKinnon. If they do get another center it would be for a more 2-way kind of player, someone who can fill some of the void left by Kadri.
