There has been speculation for ages in Van that he was prepared to leave, that he wasn't happy, that he might not sign etc. etc. and they've been hounding him particularly strongly the last few weeks. The profession is entirely centered on stirring up controversy so people click on articles but in doing so they irritate the players and mislead the fans. Its obnoxious and I can't stand it.

(CGY/DAL/NJD) - Tanev for Grushnikov, 2024 2nd (DAL), 2026 4th (DAL), 2026 3rd (DAL) for Brady
Dallas got a solid defensive defenseman with huge salary retention and only gave up some low value picks and a low value prospect. Unreal, the kind of trade you envy and wish your team did.

Vancouver as a team has a goal differential of +59 yet Kuz was the only forward on the team carrying a minus rating. He's a defensive liability which is why he was repeatedly a healthy scratch. He's all offense, and when the offense isn't there, he's a detractor for the team.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mokumboi</b></div><div>1 - You keep saying 38 games. The first time I figured it was a typo and let it slide. Now I have to ask: you do know the Canucks have played 48 games, right? And no, five times over four months is not fitting the definition of "regular basis". Regular basis means like weekly. Or bi-weekly. Routinely. Even with your typo/fib, it's not a common way to describe this amount of that time frame. And on top of all that, it's not regularly scheduled. It's not "okay he sits once monthly on the 13th". Ya know... regular basis? I'm not sure what you're missing here, bro.
2 - It's also cute how you refuse to answer the simple question of whether 18 goals in 36 games is "really bad".
Move the goalposts wherever you want, we're done here. This is boring. I'm not a remedial English teacher.</div></div>
You're being unbelievably pedantic. Also, he was a healthy scratch 5 times up to Jan 4th, which you would have known if you cared to read my post properly, which equates to 5 times in 38 games. It also equates to 5 times in 3 months, or almost every other week, which is pretty close to your own definition of "on a regular basis". Also, you're the one quibbling over dictionary definitions.
Whether he played well last season under Tocchet does not negate that he has played terribly under Tocchet. You are acting like this negates what I said when I clearly demonstrated that on either dimension, whether he played badly for a stretch or taken as a whole. You're just digging in your heels when you are clearly in the error. Very odd behavior.
What a very weird thing to harp on about for multiple posts now.

(CGY/VAN) - Lindholm for Kuzmenko, Brzustewicz, Jurmo, 2024 1st (VAN), 2024 4th (VAN)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mokumboi</b></div><div>Bro, I'm not nitpicking in the slightest. I am using the actual definitions of words and terms. Now, you can move those goalposts from Denver to Marrakech, but it ain't gonna change what was said and what I specifically responded to. Everyone can just see it in the thread. If you want to imagine that once a month is "regular basis" and 18 goals in 36 games is "really bad", well gosh, have at it. More power to ya. Just don't expect everyone else to rewrite the dictionary.
Cool? Cool.</div></div>
Has Kuzmenko played horrendously under Tocchet? Yes, he has both had stretches of horrendously bad play, and taken as a whole played worse under Tocchet than his previous coach. Your post of "achktually, he had a good stretch last season" does not negate the truth of the statement that he has played badly under Tocchet. But by all means, post the dictionary definitions of which words you think I used incorrectly which is totally not nitpicking when the substance of what I said, "He has played badly under Tocchet" is manifestly true.
Also, any impartial person will know that it's nitpicking to claim that being scratched 5 times in 38 games isn't "on a regular basis". He's commanding a large salary and should never be scratched at all, let alone time, after time, after time, after time, after time.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mokumboi</b></div><div>1 - Five healthy scratches in 48 games is not regular basis. By any stretch of the imagination. That's barely over once a month.
2 - Except you didn't say under Tocchet "this season" in the earlier comment. You said "under Tocchet". Not the same thing, bud.</div></div>
He has been very bad under Toccet. Saying he was also good under him last season doesn't negate what I said. He has been extremely bad under Tocchet. You're nitpicking when the substance of what I said is true.
In the 11 games since his last scratch, he has 0 goals and 2 assists. He was also the only forward on the Canucks with a minus rating, which is shocking since the Canucks lead the league with a staggering team differential of +59.
Kuzmenko had negative value on the Canucks and getting his contract off the books for next year is a major W for the team. As I said before, you are entitled to believe he could turn things around in Van, but I don't.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mokumboi</b></div><div>Heh. Now it appears we need to review what "regular basis" means. And again, clearing cap for a forthcoming extension does not inherently make one a cap dump. I'd also suggest that your review of his play is way off. Dude scored 18 goals in 36 games for Tocchet last season. Is that "really bad" to you?
Words and terms have meanings, sir.</div></div>
Kuzmenko was a healthy scratch for 5 games this season as of Jan 4th (as per sportsnet article on Jan 4th, which means a healthy scratch in 5 of 38 games). it's a nitpick to claim this isn't "on a regular basis".
Also, it's true to say he has been bad under Tocchet this season. The question is whether you project his play getting any better under this coach on this team. You are free to hold the opinion that he would have, I think categorically not.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mokumboi</b></div><div>Ehh no he's not. He's missed six games this season, and not all of those were due to a healthy scratch. In what world is a guy with 47 goals in 124 NHL games a cap dump? Was he a salary clear? Sure, they had to fit Lindholm somehow. Did he hold a reduced value from six months ago? Okay, sure. That does not = cap dump.
People overuse terms way too often.</div></div>
Kuzmenko has been bad under Tocchet. Really bad. It's unlikely the coach is going anywhere and Kuz at $5.5m is a massive chunk of cap for a player that is sat in the press box on a regular basis, especially considering this trade gets rid of that $5.5m for the upcoming off season when the Canucks have to sign Pettersson and Hronek who will both definitely expect pay increases.
On that contract, on that team, he had negative value, thus getting rid of him is a positive, thus it counts as a cap dump.

Kuzmenko is essentially a cap dump for Van, he was a regular healthy scratch and has another year at $5.5m cap hit. A late round 1st + 4th + low value prospects is a fair price for the return.

(DET/VAN) - Hronek for 2023 1st and 2nd
Vancouver must be the only team in history to be 6th last in the standings and trade a 1st round pick for a roster player at the deadline. Just an absolute catastrophe, do the people running this clown show not understand how to compete in the NHL? Do they not understand the draft and the salary cap? The team is not good. The team has bad contracts. The team needs to rebuild. Yet they do everything possible to thwart a rebuild and commit and then recommit to being mediocre for year after year after year. I've been a Canucks fan for decades, but I'm 100% checked out on this team. Unbelievably bad management, I don't blame Pettersson or whoever else who opts to skip town at the first opportunity, because the playoffs are many years away for this dumpster fire of a franchise.

(VAN/NYI) - Horvat for Beauvillier, Räty, conditional 1st
It's always kind of funny to see people's reactions. Lots of people trying to rationalize why this is a W for NYI and an L for Van by saying the most outrageous things like "they could flip him for even more value!" or "I'm sure he's already agreed to an extension!" (he hasn't, the NHL article has a quote from Horvat saying there have been no contract talks).
Horvat wants a big pay day. Either NY overpays him or he hits free agency and someone else will overpay for him. This is a guy who doesn't care to win, he cares to get paid. Van wins by getting value for the future of their franchise for an asset that was walking soon anyway.

The Canucks didn't lose anyone significant this offseason while adding a high potential, top six guy in Kuz and massively improving the PK with Mikheyev. Add in that they will get a full season with Boudreau (who's coaching record was a high enough ppg to make the playoffs had he been there the full season last year). You really think they won't get over the hump and break into the playoffs?

Miller was far and away the best player on the team last year, and while he can get visibly frustrated at times, he plays with massive amount of heart. It's always risky signing an older player to a long deal like this, but I think he can deliver, I voted yes

Can someone explain why so many people are doubtful he'll translate his point production to the NHL? Panarin and Kaprizov had similar production in the KHL to Kuzmenko and became instant point per game players in the NHL. The only difference I can see is he's a few years older to be entering the NHL than those two.

Motte is a great player, excellent defensively but has flashes of a goal scorer (he put up big numbers in college but could never fully translate it into the NHL). He was a warrior in the one playoff run with the Canucks, probably worth more than a 4th to be honest.
