A trade suggested by Editor In Leaf from Columbuses perspective
What an absolutely terrible trade from a leafs perspective. I wouldn't trade Nylander for the bust that is Patrick Laine. Let alone adding 2 1sts and our top prospect. What a ridiculous idea. Werenski is good, but no where close to the value suggested in this trade.

Yeah, a 1st to move Reaves is ridiculous. If they want to move on you bury all but $200K in the minors.

Marner can't sign an extension for another year, so that's not a necessary detail. Murray doesn't cost a 1st to move, it cost Ottawa a 3rd and a 7th to move 2 years of his deal, moving 1 year will not cost more. Brodie had a down playoffs but I'd bet on him having a good year, wouldn't move on from him just yet.

I get that this started by playing with the Nylander trade rumor. (Which I'm not in favor of btw.) But why after freeing up Nylanders $6.9M did you then go out and give $6.3M to a much worse, and much older Palat?

I know people will want to refer to the Lupul treatment, but he was in fact incapable of actually playing, even after receiving a second opinion. If they sign Pietrangelo, there's no room for Dermott on this team, and Johnsson likely would need to get traded as the cap will probably not be 88mil.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NR1203</b></div><div>Johnsson will be ready to play at the start of next season (assuming his recovery is on track) so you can't LTIR him. I think trading him and Dermott for picks to flip for a Dman (or directly trade for Dman if they can get a deal) will be beneficial. Neither has a future in Toronto and the Leafs would save about 6 million which they would be spending on a 3rd line winger and a bottom-pair Dman (not to mention Dermott will have to play his off side)
Also, don't expect the cap to go all they way to 88. I think 85 is the best-case scenario.</div></div>
Sorry if I wasn't clear. I put Johnsson on LTIR to remove his cap hit rather than going through the process of trading him. I expect he gets traded. I wasnt trying to bury him there.

I never said it was. I was looking for input on what it would take to make that deal. Read the post, not just the trade that was made. That said. If you think Georgive is worth more that a top 6 winger. You need to put the pipe down. Kid has upside sure. But he is a backup goalie. Who's played 60 games in the nhl. Not getting a top 6 winger for him straight up. Guaranteed.

McD wasn't a rental, he had another year remaining when traded. I can understand not wanting to take back one of those contacts, but I think I'm already on the verge of a big overpay. This is likely where the deal would fall apart.

I switched it to be Zaitsev, I think it's more realistic they'd take a player they can use. I built this around the parameters of the Tampa deal for McD last year. And I think I've already sweetened it enough to take a contract back.

Leafs acquire Simmonds and Gudas
What I'm looking at to start is a different approach to a rental. I'm not sure a late 1st or 2nd for Simmonds helps philly much as they are in more of a retool than a rebuild. and Brown is a good young player who is buried on the leafs depth chart, thinking that might be close to something that works for both sides. I don't know what philly has coming for goalies, so I thought a kid with upside might interest them. Gudas is a piece I like but his value isn't high. I thought maybe taking a shot on a goalie and helping the leafs shed Ziatevs salary would intrigue them. Maybe the pick is a 1st instead to get it done. But don't make it sound like Simmonds and Gudas are perennial all stars. They won't fetch much. Simmonds maxes out as fetching a 1st. But it's a buyer's market, and Gudas is a 4-6 D man. Again not netting a kings ransom.

Why are we trading a 60 point Nylander who is younger with tons of upside for Trouba who is older and has I beleive 33 pts as his career high? Just because a guy plays D and holds his stick on the right side doesn't mean he is worth one of our young stars.

It was certainly a good thought, but not what the Rangers want.
Rangers have too many guys like Leivo who can score 30-40 points on a good year. McDonagh can absolutely get a top forward. (By top forward I don't mean Matthews, Benn, Malkin, etc.) I mean more along the lines of a consistent 60-65 or 30+ goal scorer. Teams will make the sacrifice if they feel it's the right move. If a team that has a lot of Offense wants Defense they'll swap. For example Seth Jones for Ryan Johansen. CBJ needed Defense and NSH needed offense. CBJ had plethora of Forwards and NSH had plethora of Defense. Just made sense for both sides</div></div>
What you describe is Nylander or marner type. And there isn't a team in the league paying that price for him. You use the Seth Jones deal as a reference but both players in that deal were young entering their prime aged players. Mcdonagh is almost 30 and signed for 1 more year. Don't get me wrong, I like him. But we aren't buying a Seth Jones here.

I realize Leivo has little value on the block. (Unfortunate he's a good player.) I don't know the NYR system so if they have a goalie for the future then I guess sparks isn't necessary. The meat of my offer is the 1st and 2nd plus as I mentioned I think it takes a legit prospect to make the rangers happy. Perhaps the leafs would move a guy like Brown instead of Leivo, another player with room to improve still in Carrick? I think with more ice time and an offensive role he will thrive. I'm sure you'll call them "throw ins" too though. I don't pretend to know what the rangers needs are I'm just trying to work out a deal that seems reasonable. What do you think it takes?

With that the NYR want either a top forward or top forward prospects. It's been said here also opting against picks and prefer drafted prospects or roster players.</div></div>
Do they have a goalie in the system they like? I just know Hank isn't getting any younger. Thought the best goalie in the AHL was a good idea. They aren't getting a top fwd for him, Leivo is an NHL ready player who has upside, I realize his value on the market is low though. The Leafs have some good fwd prospects though so I'm sure something can be worked out on that front. Picks and prospects have to be the primary currency here. No team buying right now is looking to subtract from their roster.

First off no truth to concussion. But if he were to miss time you can't separate the Kadri line, it can handle tough matchup, and carry the offence. I think you try something like this.
Marleau Kadri Marner
Jvr Nylander Hyman
Leivo Bozak Brown
Komarov Moore Kapanen
If Nylader can't handle C then Marleau is an option long term if needed. But don't burn him out before playoffs.

Leafs get Nash
I agree the wing is not an area the leafs need help, but there is very little available at C so adding a winger and moving nylander to 3/4C would give us 4 solid centers for the playoffs, let nylander thrive against weaker competition, and prepare him to be 3C next season. As Jordan89 mentioned it may not be the top line that Nash ends up on, but I've waited all year to see Marner with Kadri and really like them together. I'm not big on Brown there and would want the speed of Kap with nylander
