I think NJD need more of a defensive minded- DMan... not -36 Matheson.
Puck moving Ds are covered for them.

Hurricanes Trade Necas
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caniac2000</b></div><div>Necas is also not playing on the top powerplay unit, not on the top line, and is still on a PPG scoring pace since the all-star break. Necas is the better player, it's not close. Slaf's been okay recently, but he's also had his rough spells.</div></div>
Caufield, suprinsingly has not been a PP merchant this year (his shot is taking time to come back) - only 20 pts out of his 55 pts ( vs. 12pts on 51 for Necas).
Don't get me wrong - I'd LOVE Necas on my team - that's why you are getting offers of 4 first round pick for him lol. Slaf is at a PPG too since the All-stars.
But it serves no purpose to debate on this because at the end of the day Necas >>>>>> than any forward on the habs not named Suzuki, Slaf, Caufield, Dach. We have a top 4 and we need a top 6.

Necas
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caniac2000</b></div><div>Necas would be a significant upgrade to what is already on the wings in Montreal, I don't think that's questionable. But there isn't a fit here. The 2 guys Carolina would have major interest in are Suzuki and Caufield, and even then Caufield on his own is a downgrade from Necas.</div></div>
I love that we are arguing the same points on two different posts ahaha.
Again - I strongly disagree on Caufield (23yo) being a downgrade as he has better projected points (64 pts/82g v.s 58pts/82g) than Necas (25yo) while playing on a TERRIBLE team and coming back from major shoulder surgery. Also, Slaf, at 19, is projected 12 pts behind Necas... even after the terrible start where he got 10 pts in 34 games. So I would dial it back a little bit on that front.

Hurricanes Trade Necas
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caniac2000</b></div><div>Except the position of need would be scoring wingers. Montreal don't have anybody on the wing as good as Necas, Caufield included. There isn't a one-for-one trade here. Maybe there's a world where Carolina may listen to Necas, 1st, Morrow + for Suzuki and something like Justin Barron, but there's no world where a one-for-one trade makes sense here for me. It would need to be Caufield + or a larger deal for a bigger piece. That doesn't just apply to Montreal, by the way. If this was Vancouver, Necas + for something like EP40 which the Canes tried before the deadline.</div></div>
And MTL's need are top 6 wingers... conclusion : Canes and habs are not great trading partners right now. And that's okay.
We have a surplus of Dmans and picks. We have a GREAT need for top 6 talent... and it is absolutely dumb to trade a top 6 players for another. Its a laterral move at best.
Altough considering you have to resign more than half your Dcore next season... I'm sure one of our Dman could be of interest.
<strong>BTW </strong>- Caufield (23yo) has better projected points (64 pts/82g v.s 58pts/82g) as Necas (25yo) while playing on a TERRIBLE team and coming back from major shoulder surgery. Necas
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caniac2000</b></div><div>The 5th overall pick makes this a little more interesting... ultimately, I still think the Canes pass because this is a draft ripe with defensemen and the Canes don't like taking D men in round one. Wrong year. It's more likely that the Canes would move Necas for another top 6 forward, so probably Caufield. Either that, or there would need to be very uncomfortable conversations around Slafkovsky</div></div>
I doubt KH will trade a chance for Catton/Lindstrom/Demidov for Necas... Habs are rebuilding and not in a win-now mode.
Necas would be fun to acquire for the habs, but the Canes are not a good trading partners because the only thing the habs are willing to trade are overpaid vets, LHD and future... which is of no interest for the Canes.
We can't trade for Necas by sending one of our top 6 guys... then it's only a latteral move that serves no purpose.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caniac2000</b></div><div>Not for that they don't. Nothing here helps the roster. They need scoring, Necas provides that. If they trade him they need scoring back. Futures don't do anything. Montreal needs to start with Caufield</div></div>
Thats a fair point - While value is there in a vaccum - you have to consider that you are not buying from a rebuilding team, but from a contender. It's more likely that they trade 1 for 1 for a player in a position of need.

Steady rebuild - MN trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ryminister_92</b></div><div>Just because Matheson is a top pair guy on a ****ty Montreal team, doesn’t mean he is on a contending team. I don’t see why Montreal fans can’t comprehend that.
He wouldn’t play over Brodin. 0% chance of that. He likely wouldn’t play over Middleton, maybe a 5-10% chance he would. So that leaves him on the third pair. He’s not as good as Montreal fans are saying. Sure you could get a 1st for him, the market is crazy and sometimes teams get desperate and every GM has their reason to move a pick if they want. But saying he’s a top pair guy is just egregious. Couldn’t be further from the truth.</div></div>
You are in bad faith buddy, It's no use to have a discussion with you.
While Brodin/Middelton v. Matheson in the top 4 is debatable - depending if you want more of a defensive-minded D paired on the first pair. Matheson is a LHD PMD which is excellent in transition and at creating offense - MN does not have that on the LHD, which gives him the edge in certain systems (which I think MN would utilize).
His defending is actually decent... he just gets a "stroke" from time to time and tries to do to much (happens when you play 28min a night). Like, he's a good mobile D, but he's not Makar, and I think he forgets that sometimes.
In terms of value he's a guaranteed first round pick. Hell! SAVARD is propably worth a first, Brodin too.
Even in the worst of case where a coach doesn't want to break the top 4, A Dcore of :
Brodin - Faber
Middleton - Spurgeon
Matheson - Bogo/Merrill
or
Matheson - Faber
Brodin - Spurgeon
Middleton - Bogo/Merrill
or
Brodin - Faber
Matheson- Spurgeon
Middleton - Bogo/Merrill
would be EXTREMELY GOOD, I'm more the type to have a third pair of purely defensive Dmen (Middleton - Bogo/Merrill), leaving Matheson in the top 4... but you have a very diverse and mobile top 4 that could crush any opposition with MN's cycle game where Matheson can effectively pich and back check.

Leonard has maybe 4-6 games left in his playoffs if he wins the NCAA title so he might his 30 goals
Xhakaj has 25 left plus 4 round tournament for playoffs and the possibility of a 4 team Memorial Cup Tournament
Dude's gonna score 50 goals this year at the pace he's going since Switching to the Center Position for the first time since Peewee
I love Leonard, i do wish i had him .. he's that good.
But i feel like you should take a harder look at Florian Xhekaj as nearly 3 months later he not only maintained that pace he's accelerated
He's done so while switching to a harder position for the first time in years and thriving there even more then on Wing.
Plus like Arber Xhekaj he has that Big Slap Shot he can lean on and although its not 107MPH like Xhekaj's
But its still a heck of a shot that neither of them had unlocked before joining the OHL's Bulldogs.</div></div>
Dude... there is a big step between the NCAA and the OHL... Leonard would have 70 in the OHL.

LOL - not giving TWO top 10 picks for Zegras... you realize that Z was a top ten pick as well? We might end-up with TWO zegras-equivalent players by not trading...
Keep the assets, sign Zegras when he becomes a UFA or when he eventually goes the PLD route and is trade for cheap at 50% retained.
We are 3-4 years out before competing (aka times it takes for guys like Slaf, Hutson, Reinbacher to mature and simultaneously with the downfall of Toronto and Boston). We have time to develop a winning team.
