You keep ignoring the question: who would you actually target?
List them. I’m curious who these #3 dmen are who are RD, make around $4.5, and are in the same stratosphere as Hanifin. Demelo? Larsson? Ceci? Myers? Slim pickings, all on the wrong side of 30 and significantly worse than Hanifin

So who would you target then? Genuinely wondering cause there’s few if any options out there meeting your description.

I think you guys honestly will (and should) go for a rental 2C, and the cost to dump Johansen will add to the overall price. Imo Lindy gets a first and decent prospect, but then add in Dube for depth (so you don’t have to keep dressing 11F halfway through the year) and the price to dump RyJo makes this fair value.
I get your points though and maybe it is too much. I just think there’s so few good rentals this year that this price of 1st+good not great prospect+cap dump is attainable, whether it’s from you guys or someone else.

That’s the Sabres laughing at your ABURD proposal
ZERO INTEREST in Hanafin
We aren’t giving another defenseman that kind of $$$ after we just gave HUGE contracts to Dahlin & Power
And we aren’t looking for a LD, we are looking for a RIGHT HANDED shot who plays solid defense
More like a $4-5mil guy than a $7mil guy
And btw…. we aren’t trading Savoie to get him
Again, LAUGHABLE</div></div>
Hahaha ok. What RIGHT HANDED dman will you target? Seems to me like there’s a massive hole in the top-4 along Dahlin Power and Samuelsson and few options to fill it.
I guess you could overpay an aging Pesce, doubt he chooses Buffalo as his UFA destination tho even if he’s from upstate NY. Ditto with Montour if he hits UFA. Beyond that, options are limited. Probably gonna have to just go for BPA over handedness like Ottawa getting Chychrun.
But hey, if it’s so LAUGHABLE, enjoy your bottom-10 ranked D and no good d prospects!

Nikita Zadorov Trade Comps
I appreciate the work that you did to get these comparables, but these are all low-end comparables. Zadorov was 2nd in the league (!) in 5v5 goals for dmen last year. His 14 even-strength goals were probably more than the career goal totals for most of the guys you mentioned. Not to mention his size, physical play style, and unbelievable skating ability for his size. Not saying he's some elite top pair dman, but he's certainly better than 90% of the guys you listed (guys like Nemeth, Megna, Prout, Jack Johnson, Jordie Benn are not even comparable. . . These guys are career #6/7 dmen). He's also great analytically (this year he's our best dman by xGA/60, CF/60, and CA/60). He's worth more than a 3rd for sure. Will he get much more than a 2nd? I'm not sure, just because there are many sellers and few buyers. But he's getting at least a 2nd.

Flames Re-Tool
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Untuxed</b></div><div>Even if handedness is not being considered the second part of the next sentence matters more. The reports are the Sabres are looking for a RHD defense first defenseman. We have two really good big, mobile, good with the puck, great in transition RHD. Hanifin would be the third best of these on the Sabres, he wouldn’t get any powerplay time and would not be a good fit on the roster.</div></div>
But Hanifin is a defense first dman who should not be on the PP. That is the scouring report any Flames fan would give you. Yes he is also big and mobile, but he is defense first in the same way that Brayden McNabb or Cernak are big, mobile, and defense first, but still pucking moving two-way dmen. To me that’s exactly what you are looking for but don’t realize that Hanifin actually is that type of dman exactly.
Handedness is definitely a valid concern, but otherwise your description fits Hanifin to a tee.

I meant to add that Lindholm would come with an 6 yr, 48 mil extension (8 mil per). I get that it’s a lot to give, but i could see Trotz making a big splash for Lindholm and see a similar price for him as for Horvat (mid 1st+prospect+roster player), and then add Toffoli and consider that we’re taking Duchene’s bad contract I thought it would benefit both teams. I see why you’d pass though, just thought it was a creative idea

I mean... Completely depends what your GM/coach think about handed-ness, especially given the fact that he has history with Granato. What do you mean wrong style? You prefer a dman that isn't big, mobile, good with the puck, and great in transition?

Next year
The value for Toffoli and Tanev is definitely fair but I think most Flames fans would rather get punched in the face than give Tanev to Edmonton. He is exactly what they’re missing, it would almost be like handing them a free ticket to the conference finals. Creative idea but just would never happen

Cony get to work bud
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Skyraider112</b></div><div>Buffalo is not going to give you a 25-30 goal scorer, a very high 2nd, and a 3rd for a 33 year old D man on an expiring deal who is injury prone. I like Tanev as a player, but that's not a deal Adams will make. The Sabres' 2nd round in 2023 and Olofsson 50% retained for Tanev and a 2023 3rd or so could realistically occur. I could even see a world of a straight up Olofsson for Tanev deal. Keep in mind Olofsson is significantly younger and doesn't have injury history</div></div>
Then you aren’t getting Tanev. Tanev gets a 1st+ as a rental no question. He’s so underrated and would be the absolute perfect fit to partner with Power and help him bring his game to the next level like he did with Hughes in Vancouver and Kylington in Calgary. Calling him a 33 year old injury prone defenseman is just silly. How about a top-10 defensive dman in the league (both by the eye test and analytics) with great mobility and puck skills who has proven to be an elite partner/mentor for young up and coming dmen? If he were to be on the market he’d be the 3rd best dman available (behind only Pesce and Orlov).
Olofsson+high 2nd would be fine value, but the Flames just don’t really need Olofsson and would probably just go for the highest pick available, and the Flames sure wouldn’t be sending a pick back the other way. Olofsson for Tanev straight up would be an easy no from Calgary. I don’t see a fit between Buffalo and Calgary for Tanev because the 13th pick is too much but the 2nd is too late. I see Tanev being held til next deadline and going for a 2024 1st and 3rd

Eichel Based Off Vegas Reported Price
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ledge_And_Dairy</b></div><div>This is simply based of the reported asking price for Eichel, adding a 3rd team is semantics.
There are other goalies than Bernier on the market. McCabe is projected to sign a 1x1 deal, he's coming off a major injury and probably wont get a long term deal</div></div>
I get it’s based on Vegas deal but Monahan having an NTC and not being enticing to Buffalo is relevant because it makes this proposal unrealistic.
Where is McCabe projected for a 1x1? I think 25 teams offer more than that. He’s 27 with good defensive results and could easily get 3. I think 2.5x2 is too low
And Bernier couldn’t get a deal done with CAR and had a great year on a terrible team. Doubt he gets less than 3

Eichel Based Off Vegas Reported Price
Monahan won't waive for Buffalo and don't see why Buffalo would want Monahan. We either have to flip him for assets first or replace with a better option that Buffalo would want.
Doubt Bernier takes a discount from last year's 3 mil. McCabe also gets closer to 3-3.5 imo, he will get a lot of interest. Feels very unlikely we get Saad but I'm down if he'll come to Canada

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ledge_And_Dairy</b></div><div>There are better UFA options if we want a one trick pony offensive dman, and we dont even need one since Hanifin was excellent post Sutter. As said above, there's no way he waives anyways. Monahan is also definitely worth more than him too.
Moving Valimaki after 1 subpar rookie season is a horrible idea. I do like Garland and would be happy to add him but moving Valimaki to do so is foolish</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ledge_And_Dairy</b></div><div>Oh I know who you are now from HF, makes sense now</div></div>
Lol I love how you never post your own threads but just rip other ppl's apart consistently. Also you have an EvolvingHockey acct, check out how effective Fowler is offensively according to the numbers on a legitimately awful offensive team. He's definitely a fine LD2 and is not just a one-trick pony, although I agree he'd never waive to come here so point is moot. Who'd you rather? Jake McCabe? Ryan Murray? Think you're sleeping on Fowler, he was incredibly effective as a puck-mover back when Anaheim was a playoff team and had some decent forwards. I also think Monahan's value will only continue to lessen as he inevitably gets demoted away from Johnny/Chucky but you thought him for Larkin was a lateral swap so clearly we don't agree there lol.
As for Garland, he is exactly the type of 1/2 RW we need imo. As was Buchnevich. Definitely worth 1st+, maybe Valimaki is too steep but also exactly the type of guy we need and now that we lost out on all of Garland Buch and Reinhart we're running out of options. I'd love to hear your ideal off-season plans? How do we get one of those prime-aged RW's that we desperately need without paying up?

How is Fowler washed? He’s a very good puck mover/ offensive dman, points haven’t been there the last few years because his team is garbage offensively. Great advanced stats and very good PP1 QB/LD2 option.
And disagree on Garland. 25 yr old RW with offensive upside and that skating ability is worthwhile. Similar price as Reinhart but better player imo

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Rangsey</b></div><div>What's Calgary's protection list look like. Assuming Lucic doesn't waive, is Dube going to be left unprotected?</div></div>
Assuming he doesn't waive it would have to be one of Backlund or Dube exposed, which is why if we make this trade we could protect both because Monahan would be gone. We could expose Acciari, who is really only a small cap dump/ effective 4th liner and replaceable by a guy like Derek Ryan, and keep both Backlund and Dube. But still all indications point to Lucic waiving and we won't have to worry.

You think? I think you're sleeping on Denisenko. He is gonna be a top-6 RW and has the value of a mid-first while Acciari and Gudas just balance the cap. Don't see us getting much higher than a mid/late 1st+cap dump back, and Denisenko is definitely more valuable than a mid-first in this draft imo
