Bennett Updated
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MNBassman</b></div><div>All things equal, I would take Bennett over Hartman 100 times out of 100 times, but because of their contracts, Hartman probably holds more value…especially to the Wild.
I’m not nearly as high on Walker as you are! I watched every game of his with the Gophers and I’m not sure he improved after his freshman season. Plus, he is already bald so I think his ceiling is right where he currently is…a fringe NHLer and nothing more. If he ever gets an extended stint with the Wild he will easily be exposed for what he is; a speed and effort only guy. His hands and head are definitely below NHL average!</div></div>
With all this being said, lets say the Wild see Bennett as a center that fits their term. Rossi, Bennett, and Ek as the top 3 centers going forward. Does this trade make sense then? If I take the retention off of Greenway, does it change anything at all? Gudas doesn't have to be there either, but I figured it would be cheaper to get him than Schenn right now.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jnowariak</b></div><div>I think you need a top line, then 2 seconds. But alas, I think my original question matters for next year because of the cap. Bringing on Bennet likely means you don’t re-sign Addison, so you need to think of the total surplus value.
The Athletic values Hartman at $4.4 ($1.7 actual), Ek at $8.6 ($5.3 actual), and Bennet at $5.5 ($4.4 actual). I don’t think there’s an edge in using that cap space on Bennet when you can get roughly the same on ice value for a third of the cap hit in Hartman. My point is that there’s more value in a guy like Walker coming up and playing like a $2 mil player than Bennet playing at his current level.
P.S. If Hartman gets his penalties under control, this won’t be an argument. And I’d take that bet.</div></div>

Bennett Updated
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jnowariak</b></div><div>I personally have my reservations about Bennet, especially at his cap hit, but I think the logic is fine. However, retaining of Greenway or assuming any extra dead cap is an absolute no-go. They only have like 9 mil to sign like 5 guys currently and any retention would decrease that amount further.</div></div>
That makes sense. I think without retention on Greenway they could still make it work. Just the retention on Dumba should be enough, or if not they could find a third team

How much would they be over? I'm assuming the Wild could retain some salary in this situation and then elevate the pick based on that

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Wildnochance</b></div><div>Greenway is worth more than that. Minnesota isn't paying a 1st for rental of any kind. The reason Russo said Minnesota is interested in Toews is he would cost only a 2nd round pick and nothing else. Much like the trade with Chicago last year</div></div>
I understand that. The only reason I would see them giving up a first for a rental like this is if they were able to get another first for dumba. Otherwise I think swapping in the two and a different prospect would make sense

Dumba Gone Kane In
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Eberles_Backcheck</b></div><div>What's the deal with Dumba? Is he struggling quite a bit? Or is it just that he wont be resigning? Combination of both? Don't get to watch the Wild very often. Thanks</div></div>
Struggled early on, been better as of late. There's almost no chance that the wild bring him back next season so it's either find a way to move him at the deadline or let him walk

Next year with TDL moves
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jnowariak</b></div><div>But that’s the thing. I don’t want a guy that can play “anywhere.” I want a guy that fills a role. I don’t think he’s the upgrade on Dumba people think he is and there isn’t a spot on PP1 for him to take.</div></div>
I think he could bump addison down to PP2. And I think the reason he is an upgrade is because he's controllable and cheap through cap hell

There's only two rentals here in the 4 players that they are getting between the trades, but idk if you want to count Gudas too much

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TanSor</b></div><div>I like Malkin a lot and he still can play, but signing a 35 year old that has been plagued with injuries his entire year for more than 1-2 years seems like a disaster waiting to happen when you're tied up with $13-14M in dead cap the next 3 years. I'd rather let another team take that chance on him, especially given all the moves we'd have to make to be able to pay him.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Mr_Gardoki</b></div><div>Just to clear up this injury issue...
The surgery he had before the 21/22 season dates back to the 2019/2020 season. He tried to rehab without surgery, the injury got worse in the 2020/21 season and needed surgery. After major surgery, no off-season conditioning, no pre-season, comes back halfway in the 21/22 season with over a PPG. He's healthy.</div></div>
In addition to this, he would be a true #1 center that we have never had. We have the defensive prospects to handle the losses of Dumba and the others that will have expiring deals like Goligoski, Merill, and Kulikov. Adding a center like this could let Rossi hold on to a solid second spot with Boldy and another prospect in a year or so

That's fair. I think this may have to be something that would more depend on how free agency plays out, as in he would get traded to a team that misses out on any of the big defensive names

I think that would make sense. My rational was that it just made more sense to trade out of the loaded left side of the defense, but I wouldn't be surprised if Addison was moved. Seems like BG doesn't see him as a long term guy to me
