St. Louis Blues signed Torey Krug (7 Years / $6,500,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pharrow</b></div><div>oh shush....you and your 6'4 forward that lays 14 hits in 54 games. Hell you read the pittsburgh media after that signing it says "brings some size" what a bunch of crap.
Already marketed into something he's not.
And believe me being 6 inches shorter and a whole lot lighter makes a huge difference when you have to clear your own net.
Pietro get 52% of his 5v5 starts in the Ozone because he can handle his own net.
Krug, almost 70% starts in the ozone this year 69.8%.....why, he can't clear his own net.
Tell me it has nothing to do with it.
One is a true 1D the other is a 2D you hide.</div></div>

To be fair, he played the last two years behind jack johnson and justin shultz on one leg for 20 minutes a game

Good trade. Honestly. I'd like a bit higher pick, but I'm not too up to date on young Calgary forwards. If someone could tell me why mangiapane is worth it, I would love to hear it.

The issue isn't about who's better (it's marner) but who's going to be better. Marner is improving and gaudreau is probably done getting better and seems to be tailing off honestly. I would do this trade with nylander instead if you changed the picks.

Friedman insinuated an OEL trade and marner is overpaid. I don't know how to work the details out perfectly but the basis is marner for OEL and a first. Arizona already has a good d core and lackluster forwards, Toronto has the exact opposite.

Johnny Hockeys New Home
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>vmark</b></div><div><a href="/users/LetsGoPens29" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@LetsGoPens29</a> Well Riikola has legit NHL minutes and could slot into a bottom pairing role there no problem. CGY is a win now team so I took that into consideration; they would most likely want legit roster players as opposed to futures.
Bjugstad, while clearly injured a bunch this past season, is also a legit NHL player, even if he is a little bit underwhelming when you look at his numbers. He would also be on an expiring deal. Looking back at this trade I would say we might have to retain a little of salary to move Byoogs at this point, just because he's been so injured, but before that, we could have gotten a 2/3 rd pick for him no problem.
Should have moved him before the season but Rutherford didn't shop him enough. That was a mistake. Granted, I also thought they should have looked into trading Rust before the season, so hindsight is assuredly 20/20.</div></div>
I'm high on riikola and I know Bjugstad had been injured but I just don't see the value outside of Murray. Maybe if they added in a second or a lesser prospect I'd be more comfortable with it.

Risto trade part 1 your thoughts
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>reelkena</b></div><div>I will give you the short version. Then one with info.
The short version is, if you looked up defensive liability in the dictionary, you wouldn't see Risto's picture. Because he missed picture day just like he misses every puck.
The longer version is, + - is a weird stat. People think it's dumb because they don't know how it works. How it does work is comparing people on the same team, in the same system with the same win/loss ratio, team goals against, etc.
Risto is a -145 in 500 games
Montour +9 in 75 games (small sample, probably disregard)
Dahlin is a -20 in 150 games on pace for about -65 in 500 games. Dahlin is a better defensemen, nobody is saying Risto is bad because he's not Dahlin. But you don't know how hard it is to be more than twice as bad defensively in a real sample on the same team. (the teams before Dahlin got there are comparable)
McCabe is a -30 in 340 games on pace for a -45. This is the best comparable. Risto lets teams score 3 times as many goals more than the team scores than Jake McCabe, on the same team, in the same system. Risto plays more minutes, which does matter and Risto gets more points, which does matter but in all calculated stats McCabe would be a much better get for any team. He's also making half as much. And there is no way you're trading 4 pieces for Jake McCabe. So now tell me how much you love Risto.</div></div>
Personally, I only look at +- if it's a major outlier. Like -165 in 500 games.

They are not equal, at all, in any terms. Your GM stupidly traded for Athanasiou and not you are stuck with his -46 self.</div></div>
-46 mostly on Detroit. I love McCann and definitely want a pick too, but a first? Come on. AA has the x factor of being a burner.

Johnny Hockeys New Home
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>vmark</b></div><div><a href="/users/Yojimbo" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@Yojimbo</a> They need a long term answer in net. It wasn't too long ago that Murray and Vasilevsky were the two best young G in the league. Calgary is also loosing a bunch of D to FA and actually need to fill out their blue line. I added Riikola as a sweetener but it addresses a need for them.
But you're right they probably don't move Gaudreau for anybody and we probably don't move Murray for anybody.
<a href="/users/LetsGoPens29" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@LetsGoPens29</a> I wouldn't say highway robbery. CGY needs a long term answer in net and Matt Murray is a young RFA with two Cups who they could sign for a long time. Unless they retained more than half of Lucic's salary we would never do that. The thing is, this addresses a need for both teams, and we have Jarry still.</div></div>
I just think that the only asset with considerable gaudreau value is Murray. I'd say Murray, poulin/legarre and a pick would be more fair if you could get the cap to work.

As a pens fan who's second team is the leafs, let me explain the reasoning for this trade being bad. Bracco is a talented playmaker with nhl potential. Malgin is a decent middle six forward with potential to be more. Riikola got less nhl time than ahl-er Zach trotman. Pens have to add way more.

I'm a pens fan and I'm very high on Matt Murray. This would be highway robbery for the pens. Bjugstad is never playing and riikola is barely an nhl player. The only way I see a package like this working isnif lucic also comes back, and the pens have no cap space to do so.

Major Cap Dump By The Canucks
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TheNorthStar</b></div><div>Ok I know that at first glance, it seems like the Canucks are giving up too much. But think of it this way, 11 million cap space for 2 YEARS for the Canucks. You could sign Quinn Hughes and Elias Petterson to bridge deals with that money. Erne and the 5th probably won't become anything, but the red wings have to give something. Meanwhile, the red wings get to the cap minimum (Yzerman said he wasn't going to sign any big name free agents, so he has to get to the cap floor) and get a top prospect (Podkolzin), a first (assuming the Canucks get into the playoffs), a 2nd rounder, and baertschi that who could potentially play well and could be flipped for picks at trade deadline. It may seem like an overpay for the Canucks, but in negotiations, the Red Wings have leverage as they don't really need to make a trade like this. The Canucks need to make a trade like this if they want to keep Hughes and Petterson.</div></div>
They don't have to do this to keep Petterson and Hughes. The maple leafs got out of zadorov and all it cost was Connor Brown. That being said, taking off podkolzin would make this more fair.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>reelkena</b></div><div>If Murray had value, he wouldn't have stayed in pit at the deadline. Pit would have moved him for a rental. The teams that would need him like Chi would have jumped on him. But his bad seasons are recent and everyone knows Pit has a surplus at goal and Murray is the odd man out. Another reason his value decreases.</div></div>
As a pens fan I can confidently say they kept him because having two starting caliber goalies is better than having one

Murray has value. He's a cup winner with only a few bad seasons and more than a few very good ones.
