2023-2024 NHL Discussion Thread #3: After Further Review...
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LeafsFanForSomeReason</b></div><div>Does anyone know - if a team acquires somebody who has performance bonuses on their deal, and that player has already met the conditions of the bonuses, is the team who signed him on the hook for that money next year or the acquiring team?

It depends on the bonus and the contract. For typical ELC schedule A bonuses, some are hit for team-related stats (top-6 in points per game). As assuming the player plays the minimum amount of games with both team, that would count for the team that ended up with player. If it’s a counting stat…like most SPC or 35+ deal that include bonuses, such as number of games player, it depends on where the played was when they reached that number.
For example, I believe both Florida and Philadelphia booked bonuses by Owen Tippett the year he was traded

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LeafsFanForSomeReason</b></div><div>That's what I figured, it seems to make the most sense. You got a source for that?</div></div>
The official information may not be available (or I've overlooked it).
I do have anectdotal confirmation from a more legitimate source however.

Just did a quick search since the game is about to come on.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quote:</div>Performance bonuses count against the salary cap as soon as they are earned. If there’s cap space to absorb them, great, we never need speak of it again unless you’re a luxury car salesperson, and you have the player’s phone number.
If the end of year cap space isn’t enough to absorb the bonuses actually earned, then the excess is rolled into the next year and counts against the salary cap, eating into the space just like retained salary or an overpaid player in the press box does.</div>
https://www.pensionplanpuppets.com/the-basics-on-nhl-contract-bonuses-maple-leafs-contract-slide-signing-bonus-performance-bonus/
If I remember later I'll look for something more official.
Basically performance bonuses are a running tally that accumulate as they are earned.
At the end of that season you subtract remaining cap space from that amount and the remainder is a carryover.
The team that is presumed to benefit from that player reaching a performance threshold, is the one to which the hit is applied.
Brown's performance bonus was for his first 10 games, and Edmonton was the beneficiary of those first 10 games, so they are responsible for that bonus.

It counts against the team the player was with when the bonus was earned.
As soon as Connor Brown played his 10th(?) game, his bonus was applied to Edmonton.
If he is traded to the Leafs, the bonus stays with Edmonton.

Someone answered this before (CF itself maybe) and it basically depends on a case by case basis the wording in their contract

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LeafsFanForSomeReason</b></div><div>- Nylander resigning is irrelevant to what the proper direction for the team is at the present moment
-Matthews regular season goal pace doesn’t really matter here at all. They can’t do enough to make this team legit between now and the deadline regardless. This season is a write off as far as a Cup goes
-They are WAY more than a Dman or two away
- Just because you acquired futures, doesn’t mean you have use them in that manner. Flipping them is what I would suggest</div></div>
I’m absolutely down for flipping Domi, Bertuzzi, Brodie, Samsonov, Gio, Kämpf for actual hockey trades or using those assets for players that fit.

I’m not sure there is an argument someone could make for me not to believe this roster:
Knies - Matthews - Nylander
Robertson - Tavares - Marner
McMann - Holmberg - Järnkrok
Gregor - Kämpf - Steeves
Reilly - Liljegren
Benoit - McCabe
Gio - Timmins
As having the same impact as this current group. With how high prices are going right now for UFA’s, how can you not sell?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LeafsFanForSomeReason</b></div><div>To me, standing pat just shouldn't be an option. We all seem to agree - this team, as it stands, is not good enough to reasonably expect to make a run. Doing nothing in that scenario is just unacceptable. You'd be basically just signing up for a wasted season, barring a miracle.
Either decide fill some of those holes (*guys with term*) to better your team before the playoffs or sell off expiring assets. They need to improve their position in some form.</div></div>
Ya...thinking they won't sell vs thinking they should are different....I agree that they probably should...it could be an interesting message to the dressing room...you guys haven't given the effort so we're not committing to this group for this year. But generally speaking I'm okay with keeping expiring contracts while going into the deadline in a playoff spot. No problems with treating them as our own rentals as the expense of not recouping some assets
But I just don't think they will actually sell. I think Shanny would veto a sell off while they're still a playoff team. Not agreeing with it, just don't see this front office committing to that strategy

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Juice</b></div><div>I've been wanting to bring in Parayko ever since that World Cup on team North America. There'd be a fair amount of risk for either side making a deal on him. I'd think STL would need to want to go full re-build if they wanted to move him + retain....as if they're just looking to re-tool they'd end up looking for another Parayko type anyway.
and...hypothetically...Morgan is a great comparable when thinking trade return....Morgan had a very rough regular season last year...if he had another middling type of year this year and the leafs were a non-playoff team...would we be content with a 1st rounder and pending UFA? Probably not...it would probably be more worth it to hang on to him and hope he returns to form.
There are differences for sure...Morgan has been a top pairing guy for several years and proven himself vs Parayko who seemed to battle it a bit once Pietrangelo left and his role/minutes increased...but I would think it would take a lot more robust package than TJ and a first and wouldn't count on any retention.
It makes it a very tough transaction to pull the trigger on given the risk.</div></div>
He has one of the worst deals in the league. There might be a useful player in there somewhere but he needs to come about as cheap as Burns did and with a similar amount of retention for me to even consider. That length still scares the **** out of me.
That would work out to being something like c prospect, c prospect, 3rd for 6.5@4.3 Parayko, aged out c prospect

Look, Im not a huge fan of Keefe (not a huge hater either), but pegging the blame on him is ridiculous. This team just straight up sucks lmfao. It reminds me a ton of the 2017-18 Avs. Great bunch of guys, they just suck for some reason.
Need to sort out the goaltending and identity. A big trade would assist in that big time, but we aren't doing anything of that sort. Take a page out of the Raptors book and do what is best for the team
