<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>You're correct. Like all teams, teams would love to have more depth or better quality Dmen. But so many Leaf fans are obsessed with giving up lots futures for marginal improvements .
And as you suggest, Leafs are fine on the left side. And the right side is fine when Liljgren returns and he can play to his standard of last season. Seems ridiculous to me to add a mid to large contract with term when Leafs don't know what Muzzin LTIR status this season or next season.</div></div>

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>PhillyDip123</b></div><div>I think the Leafs are set on D. They've got Brodie-Liljegren on the right and Rielly-Sandin on the left, with Muzzin (when healthy), Giordano, Kral, Mete, and Dahlstrom fighting for 3LD and Holl, Mete, Benn, and maaaaaaayyyybe Villeneuve fighting for the 3RD. When Niemela comes along in a few years they're even deeper.</div></div>

Before this year, and last year I would have agreed. However it seems like Muzzin is going to miss quite a while (Marner even made a quote saying something along the lines that hinted he might not even be able to play this year) and tbh he is looking even worse than last year (which is hard to do). With Muzzin falling off, our d core has taken a step back in terms of in zone defending, and Murphy would greatly help address that need, ranking in the top 91% for Defensive impact according to JFresh over the past 3 years while playing against top competition. In theory, Murphy would be a great d partner for Rielly and allow Brodie to play with either Sandin, who had some incredible results in short stints in the past, and also allow for Gio and Lily to stay together. Overall it would really bring the d core together and address the larger needs on our blue line, and for those who care a lot about physicallity (I don’t prioritize it but it’s a bonus), Murphy hits a lot.
McCabe isn’t as good as Murphy and is a lefty but I think he would still address the whole thing of in zone defending, and *maybe* could play RD if we want that flexibility

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>tryger</b></div><div>Matt Roy isn't for sale, but I think I can answer the why.

Matt Roy took over Drew Doughty's role last season and had some incredibly hard assignments. Matt Roy is a pure defensive defenseman and would be seen to open up a more offensive type player (Muzzin or Morgan). To put it into perspective 36 year old Alex Edler rebounded offensively the moment he was paired with Matt Roy.

If you are looking to move Muzzin next season, Roy would artificially boost his defensive numbers and set him up better offensively. Unfortunately, Matt Roy is one of the few defensive defensemen we can rely on against extremely tough competition, so it's a no go.</div></div>

I never said I wanted Roy; I’m making my case for why I don’t think we should get him actually. Calling Muzz a “more offensive type player” is not a very good take, considering he is just as valuable if not more in the defensive end as he is in the offensive. Roy I would like on the Leafs obviously, and I do agree the fit is certainly there next to a guy like Rielly, however my point is that the gap between him and Holl is nothing major. Mock trades/asks for Roy I have seen are a 1st/Sandin +, if not more, whereas Holl rn is worth very little. The gap between the two is not much as Roy’s defensive value is not too much higher than Holl, and when considering Holl’s better offensive side of the game, I give Roy a pretty small edge in terms of who the better player is. In the Leafs system, I’m sure Roy could show to have more of a value gap between him and Holl as there is rn, especially if paired next to Rielly, but my point being is that it’s really not worth all the extra assets we would need to pay when Holl plays very similar minutes in terms of total ice time and PK (Roy handled tougher mins when Doughty was out but again, Holl still took on big mins on the 2nd pair next to Muzz).
My argument here is not against you or the LA Kings fanbase but against my fellow Leafs fans who call Holl trash when the Defencemen they want don’t prove to be that much more valuable. Holl is a scapegoat, just like Ceci and Gardiner were. All 3 prone to mistakes more than the average defenceman but overall they made a positive impact on the ice
