<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>You should have been more precise and said something like "the Kings lack defensive prospect depth on the left side," which is true because after Anderson, Bjornfot and Clague, I don't see much on the horizon. I know that this is what you were thinking because both of the Rangers prospects are LDs. But if Jones is your "best defensive prospect on the left," I don't see why he's not next in line behind the three guys you have now, so he'd be in the same position with our team. Nevertheless, I can see a future-oriented swap of Kupari for Jones and Reunanen. And I think you might consider Jaret Anderson-Dolan, too. I think that LA might be more interested in a JAD/Simontaival package than Kupari alone.</div></div>

Jones is our best prospect on the left side and without a doubt he would make the team (if we would have a space for him) but I feel that management doesn't want a rookie-rookie defense tandem on our bottom pairing, so we got Nemeth to help coach and build Lundkvist. Without Lundkvist or if we have an injury to a defense man during the season, Jones will slot in nicely (Tinordi will be played, but more in the sense of him being a hitman alongside Reaves). But our current defense goes:

Lindgren - Fox
Miller - Trouba
Nemeth - Lundkvist

If you can find a space for Jones, please tell me so that I can phone Drury since I love the kid, but we don't have a space for him. As for JAD/Simontaival we don't need a bottom center in JAD (we have many of them McKegg, Rooney, Barron, etc.). But what we realistically need is a replacement for Chytil on the 3rd line and Kupari would slot into that role nicely and with the entirety of the LAK left defense expiring next season a star like Jones will find himself playing top pairing minutes without a question.

Good rant OP.

I don't think Nash is really a problem. With only 2 years left and the ability to rebound still a very plausible outcome, i think he'll be fine. Got to have faith. No teams cap is perfect.

Not too worried by expansion as every team will lose a decent piece from their team. It sucks but its not the end of the world. Klein isn't going to be the player that makes or breaks this team. Hopefully a guy like McIlrath can embrace the position and the loss of Klein (if taken) will be mitigated.

The real problem is the two towers also known as Girardi and Staal. I've racked my brain around trying to find reasonable scenarios where they are traded but none of them really solve the problem. Cap space. Since teams would either ask you to retain a huge amount of salary or take another bad contract back in return. So i propose an alternative that will hurt. Really hurt.

Take this year to try and do whatever is possible to build up their value. Start playing Staal on PP in hopes of getting him some extra points, give Girardi less hard assignments in hopes of his advance stats picking up a bit due to the lesser quality of competition. Whatever it takes. Both guys are not terrible players. As much as we like to believe. They are however expensive for what they bring and are being deployed more than they're currently capable of. At this point its a risk you might have to take. That way the possibility of a trade maybe <strong>next year </strong>could happen.

What are your other options?

Trade them now? Prepare to retain enough salary that you might as well just buy them out and your not getting much in return anyway. If not, prepare to have an equally bad player come back. Think Clarkson, Orpik, Moulson, Lupul, Gaborik, Brown, Bolland. All these guys have bad contracts but offer something helpful to the Rangers enough to make it worth it. Then there is the fact that most of these guys have NMC's so the % they accept the trade they're offered is low to begin with. The two best trades i could think of that actually helped both teams out was Girardi with 10% retained to EDM for Fayne and Ference. Fayne is cheaper and has less term so buying him out would be easier if necessary and Ference has only one year left. EDM gets a relatively cheap upgrade over Fayne at the cost of pretty much Fayne and Ference. Girardi is also a RH and has leadership that EDM could really use. Staal to BUF for Moulson was a possibility but that was before they got Kulikov so that now kind of scraps that idea. Once again, these were the most realistic ideas i could think of and even then i have my own doubts.

Buy them out? Man oh man that is big pill to swallow. If the owner is willing, i think this is the best option. Its gonna really sting in 19-20 and 20-21 but hey you can find a way to make it work. I urge you to go check for yourself if you haven't already.

So the first option isn't really all that bad after all. Who knows maybe they have a resurgence and end up being not as bad as they've been the past little while. At this point, it really is the only option left and if your lucky may end up being not so bad after all. Sometimes the best move is to do nothing at all.
