Although he hasn't officially announced (which he won't for cap reasons), he is LTIRetired. And Oshie (my prediction) will also be done at the end of year.

I have a feeling one more move is coming
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Kylonetic8</b></div><div>He definitely had a couple extra tricks up his sleeve I didn't expect. I think we're definitely a playoff team with Brown and Strome in the lineup. That third pair is a little shaky though, so makes sense to upgrade over Gustaffson by the deadline.
The Kuemper contract I think will definitely suck after a couple of years, but he was basically the only option (chance) the Caps had to get a legitimate goalie without giving up assets. Rather overpay with money a bit than give up picks and prospects.
My issue with GBMC has always been the same thing, he makes medium to small around the edges trades without going for any big swings. And these around the edges dudes are often old slow grizzled vets instead of giving our young guys a chance to play. Making modest moves isn't a terrible thing in and of itself if your team is solid, but the Caps haven't won a playoff round in over four years.
I am glad to see much more of a shakeup though this off season, he ended up really shaking the tree pretty hard after the dust had settled from free agency madness. I'm back on board and ready to rock and roll with my Caps into the playoffs. Let's go!</div></div>
Yea I get being frustrated by not making a big swing or change but I just don't see what one he could have taken. Even though they are eating into the Backstrom LTIR its with multiple smaller deals making it easier to clear space if he returns, which makes a Gaudreau or Kadri not feasible. Of the big money guys Ovi is untouchable, Kuzy and Carlson both make very fair money as 1c and 1d, Orlov is fairly paid as a 2d, and Mantha is fairly paid as a 2w. Oshie is really the only "bad" contract, and even that isn't horrible and I don't think they want to move him anyways. I can still definitely see someone like Chychrun or Miller coming in later either still in the offseason or closer to the deadline.
At a deeper level, every truly elite team -- from the Caps, Pens, Blackhawks, and Kings of the 2010s to Tampa and Colorado today -- are initially built with a core of multiple generational talents from high lottery picks like Ovi, Crosby, Makar, Kane. After that, savvy FA signings and trades for the second tier of guys is necessary, a la Oshie, Kessel, Kadri, McDonaugh. Finally, good drafting in the late first and in middle rounds like Kuzy, Holtby, Guentzel, Kucherov extends windows. To truly compete, the Caps would have to go back to that first step of getting era defining superstars in the lottery, as Ovi and Backstrom just are not that anymore. However, that requires high lottery picks (and luck) which requires the team to be terrible. They obviously will not and should not be terrible as long as Ovi is still around, so the best MacLellan can do is continue with those medium sized moves in trades and FA, and hope that the McMichaels and Fehervarys of the world turn out to actually be top of the lineup players.

Alexeyev is injured so I am sort of ok with the D signings. But I was hoping with him injured Johansen would step up and earn that D role

On June 18th, it was reported that he underwent surgery on his left shoulder and is expected to be miss 4-5 months. He'll probably need some time with Hershey (for conditioning) until he's able to challenge Gustafsson, Irwin and Johansen for that place on the third pairing.

They can. Even if they couldn't, he could go on LTIR or stay over the cap until they got a better idea of what his diagnosis is, and trade him then.

Other options roast me
The 5 defenseman they have signed + Johansen or a vet min is pretty good imo, especially if Fehervary plays more like he did in the first half of last season. It's nowhere near good enough, however, to lose Orlov who might have been their third best player period last year behind Ovi and Kuzy. Unless you are 110% going to land Chychrun (or for some reason a Makar or Hedman becomes available), I see absolutely zero scenarios in which they do or should move Orlov. Sandin is a great OS target, but he is at this point in their respective careers not a direct replacement. Chiarot or Leddy would be disastrous in that role, Letang and Klingberg would be too expensive and are more Carlson replacements, and there's no one else in FA that comes close.
Miller and Boeser are both great players, but they don't make the top 9 so insanely good that they can run out 3 rookies/sophomores on the left side. Take Orlov out, and its still bordering on an overpay for both IMO anyways.

Willy for Willy
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>KingExLeafs</b></div><div>No. Nylander is younger and is a ppg.
Leafs aren't shopping Nylander, but if they were, Wilson + a pick and/or prospect would be a good return.</div></div>
Wilson is cheaper and is a much more well-rounded player.
There's a reason it's only ever Leafs fans proposing Wilson for Nylander deals. The two things the Caps need most from their forwards are speed and defense, so trading Wilson is trading from a position of weakness (not the mention trading their consensus future captain). Nylander's also a terrible fit on the Caps because in the Caps PP scheme, the only spot he fits in is the one Ovie already occupies, so he wouldn't get first unit PP time in DC. Nylander wouldn't be a PPG player in DC getting the ~30 seconds at the end of each PP that Ovie finally leaves the ice for. Wilson for Nylander doesn't work at all from a Caps perspective, and the few Caps fans on this site say as much every time it pops up, but that doesn't stop Leafs fans from posting it multiple times every day.

Was gonna say the same thing. He's perfect with Backstrom, cheap, and puts in more consistent effort than most of their forwards. No idea why everyone wants to dump him.
I also don't get breaking up the Orlov-Jensen pairing. The defense isn't the problem (well, Carlson's lapses are part of the problem but there's really nothing they can do about it at this point), I think they just swap in Alexeyev for Schultz and use the savings to fix goaltending and the forwards.

Well if Sheary is all the things you described, why are you only trading him for a 3rd especially if you have cap space to keep him?
