Which year would you want incredible luck on your side
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Campabee</b></div><div>Habs can win 2 times, not sure why you think they can only win once but the rule states that you can only advance your position in the draft by way of a lottery win twice in a 5 years span. Montreal finished last in 2022 and won the lottery but did not <strong>advance</strong> our position, so that doesn't count against us.</div></div>
That is true. My mistake.
My question to you is: If you had to choose between the options of MC in 2024 vs getting JH in 2025, what would you rather have happen, Celebrini this year or Hagens next year (which would mean another year near the bottom for Montreal)?
And why?

SAVARD RETURNS TO TAMPA PLUS OFFSEASON ZEGRAS TRADE
I hope Montreal would draft a forward like Catton or Helenius over another left handed defenceman. I know Dickinson is a very good prospect, but he would have to be fit in with Guhle and Hutson, I think Montreal is hoping that Guhle and Hutson are top 2 pairing guys on the left side.

If Zegras is on the market
It does appear that the "Zegras is on the trade market" may have taken on a life of its own with very little (if any) basis for it. It appears that multiple Ducks fans say that he is not on the market, which would make sense, given his value is the lowest it has been in the past few years. I really cannot see Anaheim trading him right now.

Big package for zegras
If I was the GM of the Habs I would only want to trade their 2024 first round pick for Zegras if they don't win the draft lottery (Celebrini) and if Demidov, Lindstrom, Eiserman and Catton are already gone when it is Montreal's turn to pick. I think Zegras is quite talented, but I honestly would prefer to go with one of those guys and develop them in the system over taking Zegras right now. That could blow up in my face, but that is just how I value Zegras.

It seems to me that Berkeley Catton does not get the amount of respect he should. I know this year’s draft has a lot of defencemen, but I think Catton should be a top 10 pick.

the Slafkovsky - Reinbacher era
This may be crazy, but I would not be opposed to Montreal using their picks to get rid of Anderson's and Gallagher's contract so that they could use that money to try to overpay Draisaitl in free agency (if he makes it to free agency) when it comes up (and, yes, I am well aware that it would probably have to be a significant overpay to lure him to Montreal...like somewhere between $1M to $3M annually more than anyone else would offer)

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JeffGorton</b></div><div>You really dont know how good he is then. Stankoven is ELITE</div></div>
I think the truth is somewhere in between. Stankoven has been very good in juniors and the AHL, but he is on the small side, which can make it difficult to succeed in the NHL.
I don’t think Stankoven has proven to be worth 3 first rounders by any means, but I think Dallas would reject a Matheson trade for Stankoven.
Honestly I am not sure there is a trade fit for him between Montreal and Dallas (maybe Matheson and Mesar).
I would be hesitant, though, for Montreal to take on another Caufield sized player. But I could be proven wrong in a few years. He could be the next Martin St. Louis!!

Mtl trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TJTwolf</b></div><div>Firstly he's a 4 mil centre, most of this year would be paid. NAS retained 4 mil. Next year is 4 mil. There are cheaper options likely to be available and without the extra year's cap hit that Allen carries (which is more important to the Avs than most people seem to realise going forward). Better to dump RyJo wherever (if they can) where they spend the least assets to do it. That's called good asset management when you have few to begin with. It also leaves more cap space to try to find a deal for someone to replace him and that is arguably a LOT more important, finding someone to play 2C.</div></div>
I did not know about the $4M retention by Nashville, so yes, that changes things considerably. My mistake.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>M96N29</b></div><div>At this point, Avs are better off dumping Ryjo for a 5-7th if at all possible. They get all the value they need via the cap space to try and target some kind of help at center.</div></div>
In this trade Colorado gets to dump an $8M player that is on pace for less than 30 points and get back a backup goalie who has won a Cup (although admittedly his numbers are not good this year) for under $2m and you think this is a bad deal because they have to give up a 4th round pick this year and a 2nd round pick in 2 years??? Colorado gets a backup so that Georgiev can actually have a few games off and they gain a ton of cap space to pursue a 2C at the trade deadline that Johansen was supposed to be for them. How is that a bad deal for the Avalanche?

Desperation
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>We_know_nothing</b></div><div>This is a legit question, because I truly don't understand. What is with Montreal fans' obsession of Xhekaj? I've seen him play about half dozen times, and other than being a beast, I don't see anything special there. He's a projected third pairing defensemen who is tough. Do people think he's going to develop the same way that Dustin Byfuglien did? What am I missing?</div></div>
Personally, I think that Xhekaj is coveted by us Habs fans because he brings an element of toughness that Montreal really needs (and cannot easily replace), plus he can play decently well for an enforcer (skates pretty well for his size, has a good shot and a bit of offensive talent-- not a Norris candidate by any means). I would not say that he is untouchable or that he will develop into a Byfuglien type (but who knows, sometimes those guys come out of left field and have very good careers), but a trade would have to involve a fairly good piece coming back to Montreal.
I think the value he adds to a playoff team is that his type of game is very well suited for the playoffs (although he does take bad penalties at times).
I find it hard to believe that another team would offer up what Kent Hughes may want for him, because of his value to the Habs, but I imagine there is a package of players out there that would work if Montreal wanted to do so,

TBL Needs help on RD
Is there something that Finley offers Montreal that they do not have. His stats make it look as though he would be a 3rd (at best) to 4th liner in the NHL. Does he have some appeal other than his size?
It seems Montreal have many guys who could fill his role in the years to come, but if there is something else that he can do well, it may not be a bad idea. I just do not know what that something else is.

Does anyone feel a Draft in here
Interesting points about the KHL on here which I had not considered before. My question is, though, shouldn’t one still give credit to all of the scouts etc who consistently rank Demidov in the top 5 of the draft when the people who put out their online drafts (the Bob MacKenzies, Craig Buttons, Scott Wheelers etc.) ask them (presumably) before they write their articles. Those articles usually rave about his skills, regardless of the league he is in.

I am interested in why you say that. Just looking at his stats (already 24 years old, 6th round pick, 5 foot 10 and 175 pounds + has never been over a point per game in the KHL (or the lower league MHL for that matter)). I don’t follow the Avalanche, so there could be something I am missing, but is he really “untouchable “?

I would be very surprised if Buffalo was interested in that. I think Buffalo views Levi as their goalie of the future. Plus Mittelstadt is on pace for almost 70 points this year. They could likely trade him for a position of bigger need.

Matheson could switch playing to the other side and play with either Hedman or Sergachev. He has done it before.
Plus, doesn't TB always find a way to "make it work" with the cap?? With the cap going up next year a hit of $4.8M for Matheson (with Montreal either retaining or taking a player back with salary that TB does not want) could possibly work.
Just a thought.

I know it is unlikely either team would do the trade, but as far as value goes it <strong>might</strong> be; Zary + Coronato + "something else"....again, though, really tough to figure out and extremely unlikely.
