if Demko and Boeser want out of town
How much would you be willing to retain on Boeser for Greenway and a first? I feel like it would be too hard for the wild to make add 2m in cap hit and also resign players and fill their roster. If the Wild could somehow get Boeser at 3.3m AAV (even if it takes a 3rd team) I would love to consider a move but I don’t think they can make it work, even assuming Dumba is off the team via trade or free agency.

I don’t see him as a big enough upgrade over Rossi, Hartman, Eriksson Ek or Gaudreau for him the Wild to give up a 3rd, a 4th (Kulikovs value based on capfriendly) and Shaw, who was 45th in points and 80th in ppg in the AHL this year with 52 points in 62 games which is isn’t amazing, but he may be near ready for another shot in the NHL. I think at this cost I would rather just pass

I think Toronto would be the team adding, even though Gaudreau had 7 less points in 6 less games than Kerfoot did, Gaudreau is a centerman with 50% faceoff wins making just over a third (1.2m vs 3.5m) of what Kerfoot is.
I don’t think the Wild move on from Gaudreau, but he is by no means untouchable.

what a wild team
Not sure if Ohgren will be ready quite yet, but. I could see Beckman in that spot. Also a good chance that 1 or 2 of the three of Addison, Faber and Lambos could be NHL ready at this point.
I expect Duhaime to stick around and would think the only way the GREEF line is broken up is if Greenway is traded.
Thanks for posting, like looking forward and seeing what the team might look like in the future.

1st, 2m retention for one season is not worth a 1st round pick.
2nd, Boldy holds more value to the Wilds cap and cup contention window than Miller does, so he would not be involved in a Miller deal
3rd, Wild probably can’t make Miller work anyways, his cap hit in 2023-24 would probably make it very hard to resign Dumba and Boldy with a total of like 19.2m to sign Dumba, Boldy, Miller, and I think 8 other skaters.
In my eyes, Wild should be out on Miller unless he is magically willing to sign for 7m or less but that isn’t going to happen, and even if he does that means Dumba is very likely forced out the door

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>drmantalban</b></div><div>All depends on what he wants. Kerfoot would have value at TDL, so worst case scenario, you could use him as a loaner. It'd be easier to move a pending UFA in Kerfoot with 50% retention than it would be to move 3 years of Kapanen. I get that argument for cost certainty through the heavy cap years, but it's overhyped IMO. The Goose signing is an example of that.
I get your point though and it's valid. I just don't think we should be giving ourselves tunnel vision for cap certainty.</div></div>
Agreed, that is a good point. Definitely could get quite the haul at the deadline for Kerfoot 50% retained and Dumba 50% retained to contenders if things aren’t going well. My worry is the Wild look like a decent playoff team and ride out the season then we suddenly lose control of both Dumba and Kerfoot following a early exit. It wouldn’t be the end of the world with how well Guerin and Brackett have done to maximize their value from picks, just would sting a bit losing decent value for nothing but that is the price you pay trying to compete in the NHL.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>drmantalban</b></div><div>I've wondered about Kerfoot as a Wild fan. We do have a little cap cushion after moving Talbot and Guerin has said he's looking for another forward piece. Also, as you noted, Greenway is looking to start the year on IR (as is Merrill). Between those two, and depending on the rehab time, we may have a couple bodies on LTIR.
Price is certainly reasonable here, so probably just depends on what our front office/Guerin thinks of him. Would they rather just go the cheap route of a Sam Steel or Heinen type via FA. Kerfoot's obviously better, but just depends on how significant they perceive that delta to be.</div></div>
It also is important if Guerin thinks he can keep Kerfoot around beyond this season. At this price, we could probably get someone like Kapanen, who we could get at this cap hit or less and also have under contract for a year or two more than Kerfoot. Sure, I would rather have Kerfoot on my team but if its between 1 year of Kerfoot at 3.5m for a 3rd or 3 years of Kapanen at 3m for a 3rd I am going with Kapanen

Yeah, I was thinking
Kulikov(1.125m retained) + MIN 6th to CAR
Bear RFA rights to MIN
MIN 5th to 3rd team to retain 1.125m on Kulikov
The 5th and 6th could probably be flipped, I don’t know what the asking price to retain that 1.125m would be. Wouldn’t mind sending a lesser piece to either team instead of the picks, but I don’t feel like speculating on who that would be.

what is the asking price for Bear? If the Wild are able to move Dumba, I wouldn't mind going after Bear as a cheaper 2nd or 3rd line RD. Kulikov + what for Bear? (assuming the Wild pay a 3rd team to retain half on Kulikov)

Exactly, if the Wild didn’t feel good having Gus as their backup goalie they wouldn’t have traded Talbot for him, they would have moved Talbot for picks/skaters and acquired a goalie another way otherwise they essentially just gave Talbot away for free.

Philly gets $333,333 in additional cap space for this season. and then they have $666,666 in dead cap the following season from the buyout.

Best offer we could make for Miller
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TanSor</b></div><div>I don't necessarily disagree, but the only player we'd really have to pay in the years we have large dead cap is Boldy. Rossi, Lambos, Faber, etc. all would be paid when we are only on the hook for 800k in dead cap, so I'm not too worried about needing space the next 3 years.
Say Boldy gets a 3 year bridge at $3.5M AAV, we'd have about $4M in space. Faber will take about 850k to replace Kulikov. I don't think Addison makes anything more than $1M unless he has a great year (I'd guess about $950k), which finalizes the blue line. Gustavsson (or another backup) is probably another $1.25M. That leaves $900k to sign Gaudreau and Duhaime, but I have a hard time believing we wouldn't see another $1M increase in cap space next offseason unless there's another COVID outbreak mid-season. So that leaves us with $1.9M to fill two bottom 6 forward spots, which is tight but very doable. You could also move Greenway to free up $3M, I think Beckman would fit great on that line.</div></div>
The 1m increase in cap is already figured into the longterm outlook on here. If this trade happened, I would move Greenway and put Duhaime in his spot. Hopefully this would be enough to keep everyone else around but all it takes is Boldy to ask for 4.5m+ and we are in trouble, with not many options to free up cap beyond Greenway, Goligoski, Foligno, Hartman, Fleury, and they are either core pieces of the team or players that won’t be easily moved. I just don’t want to end up having Boldy blow up this season and we are forced to trade him away or trade half of the roster because we handcuffed ourselves.

Best offer we could make for Miller
To me, I feel like going after Miller would end up making the cap situation worse. Assuming it comes with an 8m AAV extension (I think he might get more), It would leave only 7m to fill 6 roster spots, including resigning Boldy who I think best case scenario gets 3m but realistically gets 4m-7m depending on his season and term, leaving it difficult to make the money work.
Ideally I would move Dumba for picks or prospects and retain half if need be, and sign some cheap youngish players like Hartman and Gaudreau were and hope they can outperform their caphit and bide time until some prospects can step into the lineup.
I think this season should be to set up the team to compete from 2024 and beyond, and not try to force it to happen this season, because that may screw it up later on.

These moved would make it very hard to resign Miller and Boldy next season by the way. If the wild go for Miller, they wont be able to sign Strome too, so I would rather go for Strome than Miller because he is a free agent and way less than half of what it would cost to resign Miller the next season

Answer can’t include the words/phrases “eventually,” “potential,” “down the line,” “develop,” or “could be.”</div></div>
I think he deserves like 2-2.5m but being a high draft pick tends to get you paid more than you deserve early on. Not saying its the right thing to pay him 3-4m, but he probably will get more than he deserves because he will likely be on a rebuilding team with money to burn as a project piece.
The response was just to point out that he way overpaid both trade and contract.
It’s not that deep.
