A) the idea that Brodie is a "far superior" defenseman to Edmunson is hilarious. Sure I'll say he's better, but at the end of the day, they are both solid 2nd/3rd line defenseman on a good team. It's a pretty lateral move in my opinion. And I'm not saying that just because I'm a Caps fan or I don't like the Leafs or whatever, Edmunson has been wayyy better than I thought he was since he got to DC.
B) The Caps desperately need more scoring help, Brodie doesn't put up 35-45 points at this point in his career anymore, Sure he's an upgrade on Edmunson in the offensive zone, but 9 assists in 38 games doesn't scream "scoring help"
C) The Caps have plenty of cap space, so the Leafs wouldn't need to retain and the Caps wouldn't need to give up an extra asset.
D) Both players are on expiring contracts, and Edmunson is cheaper, even with the retention on Brodie. The Caps aren't contenders, so there's really no need to give up assets to get a guy that won't move the needle that much, and that we won't re-sign in the offseason anyways.
E) The Caps have Sandin, Fehervary, Edmunson, Alexeyev, johansen, and Haman-Aktell down the left that can all play, and Carlson, Jensen, TVR (who can play the left), Iorio, and McIlrath down the right. If the Caps go after a defenseman, I'd imagine it'd be a top guy like Hanifin. And I can't see that happening
Basically, Brodie makes no sense for the Caps, especially if you have to give up two solid future assets to get him</div></div>
Edmundson is an AHL defenseman.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>KrakBirds23</b></div><div>Seattle declines. Value coming back to Seattle isn't nearly on par with what Seattle is giving up. Larsson is the big chip there and he's not flashy but easily one of the best RHD's in the league right now. I understand Toronto fans think this is a great deal which also means it's a crappy deal for the other team. Larsson may get moved next year but he's the cornerstone on Seattle's D at the moment.</div></div>
would inclusion of Minten help?

jk, thought the picks were going the other way. why would the Caps want to do that lol</div></div>
You actually thought the Leafs would give you the far superior defenceman, with retention & 2 2nd rd picks? You're smoking the hard stuff, huh?

I’d be willing to add more to get Jones in the deal. We absolutely need a top D man. There just isn’t anything available yet. I think we’ll have to wait until closer to the deadline when teams start falling out of the races. I like Boosh as a bottom pair guy with Gio. Both great shot blockers.

Second pair. With everyone healthy you go with Rielly & Brodie, McCabe & Liljegren, Gio & Lyubushkin. Conor Timmins isn’t an NHL defenseman. It’s too bad he requires waivers, because he needs AHL time to develop.

Liljegren is better than Fabbro. Samsonov and Fleury are equals, so no improvment there. Carolina is a contender, so won't trade Pesce.

Why Re-sign Sammy? You hope Woll takes over and spend that money elsewhere.
Easton won't be ready for the NHL next year.
Gio is likely done after this season.

Looking at this unbiased. You do realize this is a terrible trade right? This is worse than the Taylor Hall for Adam Larsson trade from years ago that essentially made Chiarelli a laughing stock around the league.

Casting A Willy To Catch A Kraken
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>KrakBirds23</b></div><div>Seattle isn't going to give up prospects for Nylander. Additionally contracts need to come off the books for Seattle to consider it. Look at the return Ottawa rec'd for Cat, not nearly what the Sens thought they could get but probably the best they could do. Whatever Toronto ACGM's think they are going to get for Nylander, they need to dial it back a little.</div></div>
Debrincat and his team advised the Sens he would only sign an extension with Detroit (His Hometown Team). Other teams wanted assurances that he would sign and extension upon being traded and he and his agents declined. Ottawa was basically stuck sending him to Detroit for whatever they could get, as no one else would consider a deal without an extension. That's why so little came back in that deal. Nylander and his camp up until now have said no such thing.

Firkus was a 1st last year.
Grebenkin was KHL Rookie of the Year.
Liljegren was a former 1st and arguably Toronto's most consistent dman last year.
Robertson is a former Leafs top prospect that could become something if given the playing time and if he stays healthy.
Plus a 2025 1st round pick (SEA).
