Would this team be better if Doug didnt sign EK65 last offseason
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Bluejackets2000</b></div><div>Absolutely.
Most teams want to have a couple superstars, but on the open trade market they cost a lot.
A team like the Jackets or other small market team like Nashville or Carolina need to really focus on the drafting, developing, signing the right team type players who will put team first and get value type team friendly contracts. If there are players that start to not fit that mold or want more than their value..., they trade them away...Ryan Murray, Josh Anderson, etc.
They don’t over-compete for the Erik Karlsson’s of the world when they already have a Burns, Braun, & Vlasic. SJ didn’t have a problem with their defense. But they just HAD to go out and trade for a Karlsson. It set them back about 3-5 years. Nyquist is such a good player. For $5M+, he is the type of skilled and compete player the Jackets hope to stack their lineup with.</div></div>
I think the main thing was Wilson felt that he HAD to re-sign him after all the assets he traded just to acquire him. If he didn't, then he would have traded all of those players/picks for 1 injury plagued season of Karlsson. And that may have cost him his job if he didn't bring him back. But I definitely agree with everything you said. Columbus doesn't have that "superstar", but they play a great team game because of the guys they have in there, starting with Atkinson on down.

I agree. I think all SJ fans were shocked to get a first for him. But with this team they probably wouldn't have been bottom feeders in the league, looking to trade guys for picks. But I completely agree. The first will probably be more valuable long term.

Time to change how they use the D
If Merkley comes up, I think Valsic is the perfect pairing with him. Allows Merkley to play with a defensive D.man who can help cover the rookie mistakes that are bound to happen.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sharks_1999</b></div><div>Don't think Sund counts against the limit. Not sure on Dahlen, but yeah the spots available are certainly limited. Don't expect a big trade anytime soon</div></div>
Both are still currently unsigned RFAs. Assuming they come to terms with both, then they should both count towards the 50 contract limit

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>papishark</b></div><div>Dont think Marleau should be center. He hasnt played it in a long time</div></div>
I dont think it's ideal... But I like it better than relying on Gambrell, Gregor, or Handemark to man the spot. Kellman probably doesn't make the team out of camp. And I've always been meh on Suomela. I keep trying to come around on him and I really want him to prove me wrong. I also don't see DW doing much else unfortunately. Was surprised to see that they were even talking to Sheary. I assumed he was going to stand pat aside from potentially a RHD 6th D.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Timmah007</b></div><div>I think too many people right the sharks off. I still see a VERY talented team here that absolutely don’t want to see taken lightly. Burns is still a beast. Feel like we haven’t even seen karlsson get comfortable yet.</div></div>
The talent is still there. There is no questioning that. Health is going to be the key to their success. EK65 hasn't stayed healthy since he's been in SJ. Couture and Hertl injuries haven't helped out either, as the Sharks don't have the depth to recover from their top players getting injured.
I really like the Donato addition. Liked him since he was in Boston, and I think he just needs the ice time to be able to thrive. The Sharks provide a perfect opportunity for him.
Goaltending is the other big ??? Will Dubnyk be able to bounce back? I sure hope so. Will he push Jones to be better? I hope that happens as well.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>PeterK</b></div><div>I think it is a good time to trade with the Sharks and see if you could pry a 2022 or 2023 1st rounder or later off them. They are going to stink for a few years I suspect. Three unmovable monster contracts on the back end and 2/3 are slowing down already, and 3/3 will be in a couple years. Plus no goal tending. But hey, I could be wrong. Good luck Sharks.</div></div>
No team is going to touch any of those contracts. And Wilson already traded enough assets and picks to acquire those guys to give those contracts to. I think it's a waiting game until after the expansion draft to see if Seattle takes Burns or maybe even Kane (if DW doesn't protect him in order to try and get out of a big contract). I still think this team has the skill to be competitive, but the window is definitely closing; and they need to stay healthy, which has been an issue for a few years now.

They are cheap, you always said they are good ( not you but Sharks fans in general ), so keep them !</div></div>
Sorenson has traditionally played 3LW. Im just trying to find a replacement 3C that would fit well on this roster.
I've seen plenty of NJ fans trading away Zacha for solely a 3rd. I don't think that a 3rd alone is anywhere near enough for him. I've also seen some recently posting Sorenson for Carrick. Figured if Jersey is looking for LW help, and Sharks needing a 3C, it has some sense to it. Threw in Gambrell as a prospect with the note of swapping the pick or prospect if needed.

With Vlasic declining steadily, the lack of D depth overall and Ros/Kah/MP all able to play 3C I'd just sign Vatanen at around that money instead of Granlund.
Suomela and Dahlen good F depth options too 👍</div></div>
I'm not a big Suomela fan. Dahlen isnt going to be an option this season, but I'm really hoping he makes the jump in 2021-2022.
I do like the Vatanen idea though.

I wonder the same thing seeing a lot of these contracts... Mainly the impact the California taxes make on players looking to sign with the Sharks/Ducks/Kings. How much extra would they be asking for to compensate the additional loss from that, plus housing costs, etc...

I agree, that I don't think they will move Sorenson, but this was just under the hypothetical situation that they did move him. I personally think he took a big step back after Labanc moved up in the lineup, and they didn't have anyone quality on the 3RW. So depending on who they put on the 3RW, he may be okay. He also doesn't put any quality minutes on the PK or PP, so unless you're gunna put up solid numbers 5 on 5, then let's move on and get someone else. I think they may try someone like Blichfeld before True. They really need another right handed shot on the RW, as the team currently only has 2 RH forwards (Labanc and Noesen).

More of a stretch, but Kahun Athanasiou, Galchenyuk could all take prove it contracts as well (hopefully we don’t go after Athanasiou or Galchenyuk)</div></div>
I really don't mind Galchenyuk. I think we need someone with the fire that he plays with, and someone who can make Kane not have to always be the guy to play so physical. If they can get someone like him and get Kane to focus on his game, instead of the head games, then maybe it could be a win win.
Really hope Kahun would take a 2M contract as well. The way some of these guys are signing smaller contracts... You never know.

I wouldn't be opposed to that idea. Would like to see him develop for a year with the Cuda, but maybe he's capable of making the jump right away.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ForsbergForVezina</b></div><div>Connor Sheary seems like a no brainer. Maybe Namestnikov. Otherwise yeah, play prospects, you’re rebuilding right?</div></div>
Not exactly rebuilding. If they were rebuilding, they would need to break it down.... And they haven't started breaking it down, just continuing to give long overpaid contracts to guys. At this point, I'd be fine with Sheary or Namestnikov. Just bring in someone new to bring something different to the team. Last year's big free agent splash was.... Wait for it.....
