Kane takes pay cut for NYR
NYR will definitely be outbid here…the question is if Kane doesn’t care- but sees this as his best opportunity to prove he’s worth another sizable 3 or 4 year deal…all while giving a good shot at the Cup.

I believe Drury knows exactly who is on his list. And to your point- at 2.6M for 3 more years…might be too short of a list of takers…which is why they’d probably need a 3rd team to eat 1M. Goodrow at 1.6M per is probably a much easier sell. The question is what’s the cost to the 3rd team to do this?

Maybe eat some salary (1M?) and he might have a bit more appeal…or beyond that get another team in on the deal to eat another 1M. For now, would get some cap back for this year (esp if replaced in lineup by someone on ELC). His buyout isn’t terrible, but they don’t get any immediate relief this year.

Unless he dislikes NY (wouldn't be the first), I can't see NY not being a destination of his liking. Very good chance to compete for the Cup, and while doing so might just become the apple of the eye of the biggest media market....opportunities galore in every imaginable way.
That said, this package just doesn't cut it. Igor, Lindgren, and/or Miller would need to be in the package. Don't think Goodrow would interest EDM....if he were in, NYR would need to provide addl value.

Got it...
The key here I think is getting Kakko going. He's a possession beast- but the irony is how the unit manages to get so few chances and shots...even when controlling possession. I think time will show Wheeler is not the answer on this line. Maybe he's holding a spot for Kane? or Chytil when he returns? Would be nice for Kakko to figure things out....or for the unit to figure things out to generate more O (especially while cycling)...but that's up to Kakko working w/ the coaches, and keeping his confidence- which seems so fragile.

Exactly.
I made a Bob Gainey reference in another thread. I didn't mean for that to be taken as a comparison to Gainey- but my point was that he never broke 45ish points- yet was a still a huge contributor who ended up in the Hall of Fame. Gaudy offensive #'s aren't everything...and even if Kakko turns out to be a middle of the lineup guy- although you'd want more from @2OA- teams need to be solid in the middle of the lineup as well....just don't pay like top 6!

Thing I don't like about Kakko is his body language...if he exuded even the slightest bit of confidence, more fans would have confidence in him, and he would also be a little quicker pullng the trigger on shots. FWIW, Buch wasn't exactly a pillar of confidence either- until he figured things out.

exactly....but with those ozone cycles, still seems something is missing. I mean its easy to say "come on guys, shoot the puck"...but its another thing to either take high % shots, or for guys to get open in the midst of the defensive chaos (during the cycling) to be able to take high % shots. Neither of these seem to be happening- and I don't think its the case of a player (or players) playing poorly- but more so a function of the unit on the ice continuing to gain cohesion as well as each examining footage after the game to determine where they can improve positioning. Takes patience.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Rags21</b></div><div>Pretty depressing start for Kakko. I think best case scenario is he has another ‘’meh” season and they extend him for cheap again like they did with Chytil
The problem is they have no RW’s in the system and it’s currently only Kakko and wheeler. Everyone else is a LW (Kreider, Panarin, Laffy, cuylle, othmann, etc.)</div></div>
Unless offered an overpay, or unless Kakko presses for a trade, no reason to move him. Yes- his stats are "meh"...but for his defensive play, and possession play- every team needs what he does. What the Rangers should be doing is figuring out how to generate more offense off the possession he provides.
5X5 scoring has been an issue for some time now. If they could find a way to address that, they would probably see a leap in production from several guys- most notably Kakko and LaF.

Obviously Kakko's move to 3RW generates trade speculation. But unless Kakko is pressing for a fresh start somewhere else, or Drury is offered an over pay, Id keep him in NY. While his stats don't overwhelm, his floor is that of a 2nd line (or high end 3rd line) grinding 200 foot player. As long as his contract is in line with his production, no reason to move him. Every team needs what he provides. Now will he ever be a 80-90 point player? Probably not. But I can see him develop as a Selke candidate. Bob Gainey never registered beyond the 40's in points- yet every team would have loved to have his services.

Spice things up vs DET
I'd keep Kakko w/ top line for now, and LaF w/ Panarin on 2nd. As far as Brodz to 2C, and the D pairings....hey, why not?
Realistically though, I thought the lineup vs MINN was fine. It was the collective lack of resolve and push back which did them in. If they come out without the desire to engage and win puck battles, it wont matter what the lines or D pairings are.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Rags21</b></div><div>Rangers could easily do that too. Kakko to the 3rd line. The only difference is that DET has the money and I’d say NYR the better lock for playoffs</div></div>
1st line was working just fine with Kakko....and then hit a skid. He might just be better suited to 3rd line- but needs more time for that to play out. In any case Kane wouldn't be ready to play for a while anyway- giving Kakko more time to show what he can be.
As far as Kane, IMHO I think he's gonna sign a cheap show me deal with the team he feels will put him in a position to produce the rest of this year- to get another 3-4 year contract. Could be NYR or DET, and a few more potential suitors as well. He holds the cards as long as he's not looking to cash in this year.

Detroit could easily fit Kane- just put Copp on 3rd line, and Kane could be re-united w/DeBrincat

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Rags21</b></div><div>I made a post arguing FOR the signing Kane and what Lavi should do is rotate Kane and Wheeler on that 3rd line spot. Neither can play a full 82 games and neither of their cap hurts
Wheeler has been worse than I expected him to be but he’s also not completely useless either. I think he’s trying to find himself in a new role to help cuylle and trocheck who are driving that line
If all else fails, then we can talk about othmann and other potential call-ups</div></div>
Unfortunately, I don’t think Kane signs with NYR (or anywhere) with the expectation of anything less than a top 6 role with PP time. Third line- not to mention rotating into 3rd line- won’t have much appeal to him.
This is my issue with NYR signing him. NYR need to keep LaF and Kakko in the top 6 until either (or both) prove themselves not worthy of top 6 minutes. There will be bumps in the road going forward- but for their development and the good of the team going forward, these guys need ample opportunity to contribute.

If you want to move Igor, Zib, and/or Kakko- do it in stand alone deals….the Kakko stand-alone deal itself is a giveaway. Minimum I’d take for him would be a 1st in the #15-20 range AND a young mid six player

Veterans will look like crap going 60% because they know their spot is safe....Laf did not and does have have that luxury with Lavs.</div></div>
At worst, LaF is a 3rd line player. All his production has been 5x5- so it's not as terrible as some seem to believe. But he has underwhelmed for a 1OA. For now I want LaF in the lineup over Cuylle and Othmann. LaF needs a long look under Lav in whatever role Lav has for him. Then mid season to TDL NYR can assess their options with LaF going forward. Any decision regarding Cuylle or Othmann is independent of any decision involving LaF. And don't want to rush either to the NHL.

As much as LaF has struggled, he's still a young NHL player with upside on a fair (at the moment) contract.
Scuttling him like this for 3 picks- none of which have a high % chance of being an NHL regular- would be an emotion ridden move which would REALLY bite them if LaF found traction elsewhere.

Again...getting way ahead of ourselves- but 40-50 games in if that's what this team shows it needs...then let's get on with it.
As far as Zib- I really don't have complaints with his effort or what he brings...but I've heard enough about his DJ pursuits in the off season. I'd like to hear about what he has done to improve his game. Not that there is anything glaringly deficient. But if McDavid could dedicate a summer to- get this- improve his skating (which he did 2-3 years ago), I think Zib can find something in his game to try to improve.
And Panarin- between the NMC and the contract...he's going nowhere unless he relents on his NMC AND NYR eat significant salary. To break him on the NMC matter I'm guessing would rquire banishment to the press box. This isn't happening unless midway through the season the team decides to mail it in and break it down again.

Or hopefully they don't care about preseason results and somehow using these setbacks for strong season showing. But it is noticeable how bad they played.</div></div>
It's way to early to make the assumption that the players are fighting what Lav is trying to implement...but if any of that comes to light, then that player (or players) need to be treated the way ADA was-while the team attempts to remove the malcontent(s)...the way these guys suddenly disappeared after being up 2-0 in series the past 2 years- none of them should have any say in the path NYR are taking to move forward. And if any of these guys don't "like" the path- they better respond to it by giving 100%, as they put in their trade request and waive their movement clauses!
