He's not a cap dump. He's having a hard time in LA. Give him a year and we'll see. I suspect he turns it around!

Avs idea 24-25
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ht42</b></div><div>In my opinion :
Suzuki : C1
Dach : C2
Newhook : BIG mistake to play him at C. He is WAY better as a LW
Dvorack : likely gonna be buyout or being traded away....
Evans : Better fit with Colorado than Johansen.
Also, I see Montreal searching for another 3C. Maybe a Sean Monahan come back or maybe try with a player like Kuznetsov (who is likely another cap dump....).
So, my idea about our centermans line for the next season :
C1 : Suzuki
C2 : Dach
C3 : Kuznetsov / Monahan
C4 : Johansen</div></div>
Which one of this C's play on the PK ?
Im the first one on this website who came up with the evans for RJ, and getting a 2nd in return for the cap hit is more than fair, packaging Kovacevic at a lost as part of he deal is pointless from the habs point of view in its actually bad asset management

Next step
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Rags21</b></div><div>I mean Schneider has no leverage in negotiations. They should offer him $2m max</div></div>
Lindgren got 3x3 so I'd imagine Schneider would be looking for around the same.
Kaako's QO is $2.5M and they are weak in RHD prospects.
All factors that suggest Schneider could get more.
I don't think they want to low ball him a year away from arbitration either.
My guess would be $3M x 2 making him an RFA again when Trouba's deal expires.
Lets them negotiate a long term extension before moving him into a top 4 role, which may save cap for the team or a 1 year trial before a long term extension at a potentially higher cap hit.

Next step
I say let the Ducks keep Zegras for that price and go after someone better like Mittelstadt. Mitts is 25, just hitting his prime, cost controlled for another year, has more offense, better defense, healthier and won't cost half of what the Ducks fans want for Zegras. I would do this package for Mitts before I would offer it for Zegras.

Post Monahan trades
MTL fans, please tell your friends. Small pieces won’t buy Z. Here are the base pieces needed to talk trade for Z. And note, if this isn’t of interest, that’s okay!! We do <strong>not</strong> want to trade him
Option 1: Reinbacher
Option 2: Slafkovsky
Option 3: MTL ‘24 1st + Beck/Mesar/Roy tier
All 3 may need some tinkering with other smaller pieces one way or the other, but if the trade doesn’t look like any of those three, we will very happily continue buying Zegras threads in ANA

Question to Ducks fans
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GeneralLandro</b></div><div>Slafkovsky</div></div>
I think we gotta be reasonable here, and that’s clearly too much
First, I don’t think the deal happens at all until the pick is actually up, because I would imagine there would only be a couple players that Verbeek would see as worth trading Z for in this draft. So he’d want to be sure they’re actually available at MTL’s pick. 5th overall vs 7th is irrelevant, it’s really just whether or not his guy is up for grabs
Then it comes down to value. I agree that Rein, Slaf, and Hutson would be too much value. But draft picks have a lot of risk (and take time), and a back-to-back 22 year old 60pt scorer is near the ceiling of what you’d be hoping for. My guess is that it’d still take a prospect one tier down from Slaf/Hutson in the Roy/Beck/Mesar range, but again, I think it’d only be if Verbeek really liked one of them.
So imo, the baseline of the deal is something along the lines of Zegras for Lindstrom + Beck. There might be like a mid pick somewhere in there to even it out one way or the other, but that’s my thought
I feel like if Verbeek could walk away from the draft with a combo of Levshunov, Lindstrom, and someone in the Beck tier coming in that could make it palatable to let Z go. That said. I’m also stoked to just keep Z and draft Lev :)

Question to Ducks fans
I want to reinforce what the esteemed <a href="/users/jded" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@jded</a> says in his excellent analysis by noting that a not-insignificant factor here is what happens with Anaheim's own pick. Let's assume that Verbeek and the scouting staff think that the two best prospects in this draft are Celebrini and Levshunov (but you can substitute anyone here for the latter, just as they surprised us with Leo Carlsson over Adam Fantilli). If we get one of those two with our own pick, the eventual "loss" from trading Zegras for what turns out to be a lesser player will be greatly diminished both psychologically and actually. If, on the other hand, both of them are gone by the time our own pick comes up, then I think that Zegras is off the table. (Basically, I'm just rephrasing jded's first point.)

Moving Matheson
Shouldn't the Habs be giving their players and fans "hope" for next year. By trading NHLers for possible NHLers just extend a non playoff streak.

Matheson is MTL's top defender.
He's easily top2 dman on (most) teams.
Good contract, still young enough.
The price for him is much more than a 1st rd.
And I would add it's not in Mtls interest to trade him

Well it look like some of yall were right
I think the perception is changed about waiting right up until the deadline and hoping for a bidding war. Teams that had the space (the Jets) get more utility getting the player in early, more time to adapt to the system, develop chemistry, etc.
MTL didn't have to retain and still got a first + what more were you hoping for?

Monahan was worth a late 1st and that's what Kent got for him. It's a good deal and a smart move by Hughes to avoid any extra risk before making it.

Stop sending quantity for holtz
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jay27</b></div><div>I agree. Holtz if dealt will be part of a package for a player NJ really wants. No way they trade him for spare parts.</div></div>
I don’t believe he’ll be traded at all but from Montreal the only realistic package would be built around Guhle and Holtz.
Similar age, contract situation, draft pedigree, blah blah blah.
Montreal has a surplus of LD, and a need for even strength scoring/top 6 scoring in general.
The previous comp of the Dach Romanov swap exists.
NJD has needs of a controlled defensively sound puck moving LD who can kill penalties. I’d like to see Guhle improve on the PK but he should get there with time.
But any time pieces of this magnitude are talked about on this app (like genuine meaningful pieces that teams don’t want to give up) homerism takes over completely on both sides (and I can’t say I’m not immune to it)
Other pieces of interest to build around would be guys like Swayman, Askarov, Rossi…. Just off the dome

Maybe a 3rd, and a 2nd is outrageous?
I mean... you can say you disagree with a 2nd - and it's true, it seems like a stretch - but for being outrageous.
Monahan got a 1st as a cap dump for one season.
Marleau too.
It's not 'unheard of'.
But I get you - I wouldnt do a 2nd too for Colorado. But sometimes, under the pressure of something else brewing, some GMs need to act quick.
Cheers buddy

I feel like this as well. But there’s still that small part of me that would smile if the wheels fall off the wagon for the jets and the 1st turns into a mid 1st rd pick or even a lottery pick lol
