<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RipNasty</b></div><div>Draisaitl wouldn't get 100 points away from McDavid and gets the vast majority of his points with McDavid on the ice. 40% of his 5v5 time last season was with McDavid. Over the past few seasons its always around a 3rd of his 5v5 time and all the PP and that's where he gets 75% of his points. He's also average at best defensively, this season below average. Right now, Nylander is playing better. Draisaitl is definitely overrated. Put Nylander with McDavid and he scores 50 goals and 130 points</div></div>

So he plays less than half of his time with McDavid? 40% is less than half. As for his even strength vs powerplay points, he also gets less than half of his points last season on the powerplay. Of his 128 points last season, 66 were even strength. 62 were powerplay. For McDavids 152 points last year, 82 were even strength. 71 were powerplay. So really, they both benefitted like crazy from the best powerplay in history, and it was that because draisaitl was so effective at taking one-timers from basically the goal line that it went in almost every time.

I'm not arguing that Draisaitl is as good McDavid. Don't get me wrong there; McDavid is the best player in the world by a mile, maybe the most overall skilled player in hockey history. McDavid and Draisaitl is this generations Crosby/Malkin, where both are good enough to drive their own line, but are better together.

So, to put it blunty, Nylander's resume just doesn't add up to Draisaitl's (let's not forget that Drai won the Hart when McDavid was injured half the season). Nylander is a really good player, but he's nowhere near Draisaitl. Nylander has only put up 40 goals one time, and it was exactly 40. Draisaitl put up 50 goals 3 times. Draisaitl has put up 6 seasons with over 40 assists, Nylander only has 3 and never crossed 50. Draisaitl has put up over 50 assists each of the last 5 seasons.

As for the trade itself, why would Edmonton trade a much-needed center with 2 years left at a very team friendly deal for another winger with one year left before becoming very un-team friendly?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DealFinder67</b></div><div>We are getting the Flyers 2nd rd pick back. They will probably only be 10 picks apart. We will have to pay to get rid of Klingberg, no matter how crappy it is.

IMO Leafs have maybe a 3-4 year window to win with this team, so Larsson will still be in his prime. Lily will still be a small, soft 6th RD that gets less than 10 points every year. Timmins will be better than him when healthy.

Yes Brodie is a better D but I’m addressing the Leafs needs and big Z will get good offers. It depends on what Cgy wants to do. If they want to try and stay competitive, they will want a good D in return or if they are rebuilding, they may prefer prospects and draft picks.
But we are just arguing opinions. I see your point of view but mine is just different.
👍</div></div>

Liljegren has more than 10 points <em>last year</em>. He had almost 20 points. He might be on the small side and not very physical, but he's an effective 2-way defenseman. Also the dude is 24. Let him develop before firing him into the sun. He's also not a 3rd pair D. He's been on the 2nd pair all but a couple games, and been good there. Adam Larsson is 31 right now. He's out of his prime, and based on trends, he's gonna start his decline relatively soon. By that 4th year of the window, he's probably gonna be washed. Why would you give up a rising player for a falling player during the window? On a much larger scale, you can ask Stan Bowman how that worked out with Panarin.

If you agree that Brodie is better than Zadorov, why would the Leafs give up the better player plus some for a worse player? Just because he hits? That would be foolish. The Leafs have McCabe for that. Hold onto the one legitimate defensive defenseman that they have unless something better comes along. There's no need to make this trade, especially when Giordano has to play 20 minutes a night any time a defenseman goes down. An extra D is more needed than exchanging a good defenseman for a less good defenseman.

As for Sammy, you can't trade him without another option. He has shown he can be good, and he's been good recently. Trading him now only to have a bad Martin Jones back up an unproven Woll is a terrible idea.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Leafsmustwin</b></div><div>And when it mattered Brodie was unable to play 1st pair minutes in the playoffs. I re watched every goal against in both series in the playoffs and 3 that were on the ice almost every goal were Holl , Giordano and Brodie. The biggest reason on most cases for Brodie and Giordano was no toughness to clear the net and not enough strength to win puck battles against dump and chase teams. And Brodie is bad at both at least Risto is not scared to do either and it wouldn't be 5.1 Risto that is why he at 2.6 M DUH, the move is not to just get rid of Brodie but lower cap on a better style partner for Rielly.</div></div>

You just named the 3 players most trusted to be out there against the other teams top pairings. That is 3/4 of Toronto's defensive defensemen during the playoffs, so of course they're going to be out there for most goals against. They're the ones most likely to be out against the other teams' best scorers. Throwing Risto in that position would most certainly be worse. Just because he is physical doesn't make him good. In fact, with the exception of this year, he has NEVER been good at defense. Almost every other year, he has been terrible at defense. Throwing Risto into Brodie's position would guarantee a failure. I don't disagree that Toronto needs a more physical defenseman, but they also need that guy to be good at defense or it's not worth getting rid of Toronto's best defensive player by far.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Leafsmustwin</b></div><div>Can you please explain why Brodie was not Riellys partner if he is so good? Why was Schenn a 3rd pair 800k defense playing 1st pair minutes whwn we have an elite top 5 shutdown defense lmao , why is every one so brain washed thinking Brodie is worth a crap?</div></div>

Because Brodie was Reilly's partner for a lot of last year. And then Reilly was injured a lot this year. And when he was healthy, the lines were scrambling. Reilly had 333 minutes played with Brodie, the 3rd highest TOI by pair. Reilly and Schenn were just over 100. Also, defensive pairings get mixed up purposefully. Coaches don't just automatically put their top 2 defensemen together. Vegas doesn't put Theodore and Pietrangelo together. Edmonton doesn't have Nurse and Bouchard together. Boston doesn't put Lindholm and McAvoy together.

As for the actual stats that matter, Brodie has a 9.1 EVD (Even Strength Defense above replacement in GAR measurements) this year, good for first in the entire league. Risto, much better than I thought though it is a MAJOR anomaly in his career (only other time being positive was 19-20 when he had a .5), had a 7.1 EVD. Brodie consistently averages about a 5 EVD. As for offense, they are much more mixed than I thought. With both Buffalo and Philly, Ristolainen has been around average and a couple years around 3-4 EVO. Brodie is very similar. Though Brodie has one year with 6.2 EVO.

When it comes down to who you want as a defensive defenseman, Brodie is much more consistent and much better overall defensively. If you want an offensive defenseman, results are mixed. Risto may drive his own offense better, but Brodie supports it well.

So, with all that in mind, do I want Brodie at 5, or Risto at 5.1? Most certainly Brodie.
