(COL/WSH) - 2nd for Eller
A 2nd does seem steep. But at the same time. If you go back to the Lehkonen deal everyone thought the avs lost that. Then he scores the game winning goal in the western conference finals. And the Stanley cup finals. Then if you go back to the Georgiev deal everyone thought the avs lost that. And yet he is having a very good season. And looks like a genuine starter. I say we give this trade a chance. Avs so far have made us look wrong on a few of there previous moves.

Sorry but some of you guys don't have a clue what a good deal looks like for a player of this quality, with a rising cap...
Mackinnon could have easily got 14+ million from multiple teams. Taking 1.50-2m off his market value is a huge hometown discount. He easily left 12-16 million on the table over the course of this deal, compared to what he could have gotten.
You need to compare cap hit percentage, not just face value...
Otherwise you might as well say " 1 million dollars for a house?!?!? My Grandma bought her house for $50,000!"
Its all relative.
Cap hit percentages of star players when they signed:
Ovechkin - 18.96%
Crosby - 17.30%
Mcdavid - 16.67%
Malkin - 15.34%
Mackinnon - 15.27%
Toews/Kane - 15.22%
Mcdavid today at the same cap % would have a cap hit of $13,752,750

Colorado Avalanche signed Nathan MacKinnon (8 Years / $12,600,000 AAV)
This is a fine contract. Stop comparing this to McDavid. If McDavid were signing an extension this summer it would be worth more than $12.6- it’s all about timing with contracts, across all sports.
The Avs have their core locked up for a long time, and as the cap trickles up they’ll be able to extend others. They’ll be able to build around this core without a doubt- in no way is MacKs contract crippling or anything
Go Avs!

Colorado Avalanche signed Nathan MacKinnon (8 Years / $12,600,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BCAPP</b></div><div>Why do you think panarin is a good comparison?
The two years before the deal panarin had
160 gp 55 g and 169 pts
Over 82 GP that's 28 g and 87 points
MacKinnon
113 gp 52 g and 153 pts
Over 82 GP that's 38 g and 111 pts
They're incomparable. If you go with 4 years to match panarins career in the NHL the difference is bigger
MacKinnon is in the tier below McDavid (perhaps McDavid and Matthews) with draisaitl. He's above panarin. He's certainly way above panarin before panarin joined the Rangers.</div></div>
From the time Panarin debuted in the league, until he signed with the Rangers, which was 4 seasons total, he had the 8th most points of any player in the league. MacKinnon has had the 4th most points in the league since his break out season in 17-18.
If you extend performance to after Panarin signed with the Rangers, the last two seasons, MacKinnon has 1.35 P/PG, Panarin has 1.32 P/PG. Their production has basically mirrored one another since 18-19.
No comparable is going to be on the money, but they are reasonably close. Panarin was offered 12M by the Blue Jackets, which he turned down. MacKinnon's contract is nothing insane or ground breaking. Given all the circumstances, he got something around what he should get. People just get sticker shock every time a big contract is signed.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>budgeteam</b></div><div>Panarin is a good comparison in terms of context. He was offered an 8 year 12M AAV contract by Columbus. He rejected it, and took less to sign with a more prestigious team. MacKinnon stayed with his team and signed 12.6M x 8 years under a slightly higher cap. Their production is very similar, although MacKinnon is a bit ahead of him. They are a similar age (at the time of signing). MacKinnon plays the more valuable position.
That is a 600k difference between what Panarin was offered by Columbus before even adjusting for the cap (although the difference would be minimal).
People are getting stuck on McDavid's AAV. McDavid got a higher cap hit percentage. He was an RFA. It was also leaked that he agreed to 13.5M and then decided to take a discount, but I am suspicious of the validity of that. It seems like a planted story.
McDavid, Matthews, and Draisaitl will all get more than MacKinnon here. Those are the only three players with contracts coming up who have been anywhere near as productive as MacKinnon. MacKinnon has been the third most productive player in the game since he broke out in 2017-18, with Kucherov slightly ahead of him, and McDavid ahead of both of them on his own tier.
If you look at historical cap hit percentages, this is not at all out of line. Especially when you consider how the deflated cap due to escrow might have played into expectations that players and teams have about where the cap ceiling will be a few years into any deal signed now.</div></div>

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Internetkingz</b></div><div>I agree that McDavid is a few years younger - and they both do have different playing styles. I wouldn't say McDavid is light years ahead of him though. I don't think Panarin is a fair comparison that is undercutting him a bit. Also, the whole Wing vs center debate plays a factor.
Mcdavid, Matthews, Eichel, Point - accounting for age - games played etc might be better comparisons some a bit more than others</div></div>
McDavid's current contract started when he was just 21. That's not at all a comp for MacKinnon's 28-35 contract. Panarin's deal runs through ages 27-34 - that is comparable.
Look at scoring in the past 2 years, too:
1. McDavid: 136, 77-151-228
10. Panarin: 117, 39-115-154
11. MacKinnon: 113, 52-101-153
McDavid is a vastly better player and his contract covers completely different ages, including 4 RFA years.

Players like Mackinnon don't have the same performance curve of an average player.
This is not a player that will decline hard at 29/30...

You'd think it would be worth it to ask again, though. Just, "Hey man, the Avs called and asked if you'd be willing to play for them the last part of the season and into the playoffs. What do you think?" He'd have to consider it. The allure of one last run might be enough of an enticement, especially considering how little of the season is left after the TDL.

Players can only be put on LTIR if a doctor rules them out for at least 24 days. If Calvert is day-to-day or week-to-week it's unlikely that the NHL (or rather, the NHLPA) would approve of him being put on LTIR.
As for your comment about replacing the strength coaches, the injuries this team is suffering aren't muscular injuries, so blaming the physio's isn't really valid. Bellemare hurt his knee in a collision; Toews got hit in the foot with a puck; Calvert got hit in the head with a puck and has history with concussions; and Johnson hit his face in the ice and likely has a concussion. None of those are down to bad training. We don't know what's wrong with Francouz or Mackinnon but Francouz had hip surgery and Mackinnon seemed to be moving fine all game yesterday so they don't seem to be muscle related injuries either.

Yeah I think most of us would take that in a heartbeat, and there's always the possibility of re-acquiring picks in later trades as the cap becomes more of an issue. Seconds are valuable but at least we kept all the firsts intact in this scenario. I'd say this would set us up to be contenders for more than one cup as well.

I'm not sure I'd consider this damage per se but I get your meaning if you mean loss of prospects/picks. Were not giving up all that much tbh. There are likely to be some available for less later in the day (TDL) but do we want to wait that long? It's a tricky one especially with a shortened season.

I say we give Ol’kadri some time and if he still sucks let’s say in around 10 games then we may trade him.
But I’d like Danult, I would view him as an upgrade.
And the rest of the trades, just give the bottom 6 some time get situated and set and we will see. Because remember we are still early.
I think it’s to early to press the panic button and completely rework the bottom 6.</div></div>
Absolutely agree on the panic button aspect (normally us saying that to you isn't it :P ), but there's no question there needs to be some work done in the #3C department.
