Should We Make This Defensive Swap
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jah1722</b></div><div>Guhle and Fowler are the pair. That won’t change so if you’re adding Weegar it’s for the 3rd pairing. I’d rather let Guhle and Larsson play consistently and come TDL see where they are. If you keep adding guys and moving them down how will you ever know if they will be top 4 guys?
Also as for shots on goal for Weegar, that means nothing. This season I’ve already seen Holzer, Lindholm and MDZ in the crease offensively. The D have more freedom and they moving in the Ozone a lot. This system will produce more offense from the D. Let’s suck back and watch this team and come back around January to discuss what moves they should make.</div></div>
I think we only have one sure fire pair, which is Lindholm and Manson. I can't see Fowler being on his right side forever. I do like how they play together, but most of the mishandled pucks I have seen from the D come from them being on their off side or having to pivot to make a pass to their partner.

Someone please take Ritchie
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TheJoeMan</b></div><div>Does he though? I really feel like what we've seen from Ritchie is what we're going to get. He can't skate, he's never going to be able to skate but he does has good hands. He just seems incapable of not taking bad penalties but all-in-all he's a 30ish point player making absolute peanuts for the next two years. Honestly, I think if we hadn't drafted him 10th overall I don't think so many of us would be so down on him. But I'm absolutely done thinking he's ever going to be more than the player he is right now. I wouldn't give him away just for the sake of giving him away but if another team really covets him I wouldn't hesitate if they're offering a decent return.</div></div>
I definitely agree with this take. I think as much as we wish we got a better player at 10, especially considering 2014 ended up yielding a lot of good players after 10 (Vrana, Larkin [oof], Sanheim, Deangelo, Kapanen, and of course Pastranak), we didn't. And that happens. From a draft perspective, Ritchie is one of the biggest busts of the first round. But if you look at contract to contribution, he's a steal. When Ritchie plays well he can generate good offense, is a solid front net presence, and a physical force. That being said, I don't think he fits the future of the Ducks. We saw in buffalo that our team plays best quick, scrappy, and creatively. Ritchie is not that. I think there is a better fit on another team, but I would be surprised if a team pursuing him offers more than a late pick.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>Aaah, we don't mind. Ducks looked good against Buffalo. After the Sabres scored their second goal in the opening period, Anaheim outplayed your team for the rest of the game. Now you see why we're going to rely on our youngsters and will be loath to trade any of them.
FYI, I'm pretty sure the lines Eakins used last night were Comtois-Getzlaf-Kase, Rakell-Henrique-Silfverberg, Jones-Steel-Terry, and Ritchie-Grant-Rowney.
In the last few days I had several exchanges with Buffalo fans who kept denigrating Henrique and Silfverberg as "too old" and "soon to be useless." Not yet.</div></div>
I kind of always wanted to see Jones-Steel-Terry. Jones and Steel kind of seemed like the Getz-Perry situation. They were drafted the same year and seemed like they were drafted to play together. Jones and Terry are good friends and seem to have good chemistry, And I think as a line they played some of their best hockey this season last night.
And the Henrique line was absolute fire last night. People forget that Henrique has always been an offensive weapon, but hes always asked to play a 2 way game. He got to play offense last night and it showed.

Ritchie also punched him while he was on the ice. As much as I have been on the "trade Ritchie train" for awhile, that has always been for the mediocre play and bad penalties.
The stunt he pulled last night was a goon move. Just stupid and could have really hurt Sobotka. Sure he got clipped by Sobotka first but challenge the dude to a fight, don't drag him to the ice. I don't ever want to see someone get Bertuzzi'd again.

I think the correct answer is just clone Auston Mathews. Science is ready.
Then when Tavares comes back just feed the worse version of Mathews to Babcock in hopes the young blood will sustain his life force 20 more years.

I wouldn't want to, I'm just saying that would be the correct alternative instead of buying him out, since that's what was shown above.
Grant is easily one of the most consistent guys on the team. He plays his best hockey in anaheim. Sign the dude up a few more years.

Unfortunately I don't see Turris making the ducks better. He's 30, a 6 mil contract for 5 more years, and has been lacking his goal output. I won't say this often, but I would prefer to have Ritchie.
I think if Cody Ceci was available for a 5th Round Pick. we would be putting that offer in now.
Also as a general rule, we cant buyout during the season, nor can we buy out 2 more people after Perry. Holzer and Grant can just be waived and sent down.

Helping the Ducks Score
I think my main issue here would be the trainwreck of a bottom pairing that is MDZ and Holzer. I think if you want to really win this trade, swap Fast for Deangelo. We get a young right D that we need so badly, who seems to have a bad relationship with NY anyways. Sprong may be too soft of a player to include since he's a gamble still. Our future C depth is a bit better than NYs and we likely have an oddman out. Zegras is very likely our future 1C. Steel would likely be 2C and BO Groulx as 3C. That leaves Lundestrom or Morand as a possible trade chip. I would throw them in instead.
I would also spice up the conditions a bit, kind of noting what Salzy said. If we dont get an extension with Kreider we are paying a lot for a rental. Rather than having the 2nd go to a first if we make the playoffs, make that a first if Kreider resigns.
Lines then can be
Kreider-Getzlaf-Kase
Rakell-Steel-Silfverberg
Comtois-Henrique-Terry
Jones-Grant-Rowney
Lindholm-Manson
Fowler-Deangelo
Guhle-MDZ

Pietrangelo
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Sicarius</b></div><div>I
I would agree that it seems like something has to give with the RHD situation on the Blues. We don’t know the details. Armstrong could have made the Faulk move because he knows Pietrangelo is hell bent on reaching free agency or maybe the price tag to resign Pietrangelo is too high. These are the kinds of details we won’t know until after the fact. Neither the player nor the management are going public with that kind of information.
Now onto your depth trade. The current forwards are:
Schwartz Schenn Tarasenko
Blais ROR Perron
Fabbri Bozak Sanford
Barbashev Sundqvist Steen
MacEachern is on a one way contract so to send him down means risking him to waivers.
Both Thomas and Kyrou are hurt but should be playing soon. Thomas will replace Sanford and Kyrou will be replacing Fabbri. Kyrou should get a good look in the top 9 because he’s the future and he needs it for his development.
The Blues have Klim Kostin in the AHL. He did everything he needed to in order to make the roster in training camp. The problem is there’s simply not a top 9 spot available and the Blues have the ability to call him up and send him down with no risk of waivers.
You’re adding 3 more forwards to a team with too much depth as it is. It simply doesn’t make sense from the Blues perspective. I’m not trying to be rude at all but it’s just a trade that doesn’t benefit the Blues.
About the payroll next season: I think the consensus is most likely this will be Bouwmeester’s last season. But, he could sign another 1 year deal.
As long as Binnington holds up, (it appears he will), Allen is gone next offseason. It won’t be hard to trad Allen with only one year on his contract.
Steen will be on his last year as well. His actual salary is probably low enough he could be traded but personally I think he’ll block any trade. He could be the organization’s first buyout contract. Either way he’ll be in play.
Bozak is a good 3C but that position will belong to Thomas. Bozak is another player who will only have 1 year left on his contract and he’ll possibly be in trade play.
The Blues have a LHD in the minors, Mikkola, who is perfectly suited for a 3rd pairing role and he will be on the roster next season (should be).
A Fowler for Pietrangelo deal actually makes some sense from a need perspective. Next season the Blues will have Dunn, Gunnarsson, and Mikkola on the left side. It would be a lot better with Fowler 1, Dunn 2, and Mikkola / Gunnarsson 3. The right side would then be settled with Parayko, Faulk, Bortuzzo.
I can’t tell you what the details of a Pietrangelo / Fowler deal would be but it’s certainly a lot more beneficial to the Blues than the forwards deal.</div></div>
I definitely agree and totally understand, a forward log jam would be a nightmare to say the least. Its absolutely not a need for the Blues. And the talent of the players being provided aren't filling any gaps.
I think I am assuming that the money saved by Allan being dealt will eventually be absorbed by a back up and Binnington raise. If he stays as good as he was last year, he can see at least 6 mil. Hard to say what Bobrovsky's contract will do to future goalie contracts. But the money from Bouwmeester could cover the difference. But like you said, we don't know if there was an intention behind gaining Faulk. he was obtained for a decent price but signed to a healthy contract before the Captain. It could be that Pietrangelo is wanting to test free agency to check on what his price is. It could he wants to play for a new team after so many seasons in St Louis. It could be family motivated. He could believe that the Blues got their cup and their chance to repeat is 1 in a million. Hard to say.
But I dont think any GM or Coach get a RD because they are totally cool with moving their franchise defensemen who is also RD to the left side. But that being said, I absolutely dont see Pietrangelo in a Ducks jersey.

The condition on him resigning would be important but it would also move the pick back to 2021 because Kreider could sign after the draft. Or you make it an additional pick if he resigns. But it shouldn't be two picks if they both make the playoffs and resign him. Well, let's just say there's a chance they could get something done here.</div></div>
Very good point! I think a multi condition makes sense here. If he signs before the draft, the pick is upgraded. If he signs after the draft, add an additional pick in 2021, probably a late pick.

Pietrangelo
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Sicarius</b></div><div>lol Grant is a 1C.. ok... Terry, nor Sprong is a top 6 player on Ducks team starved for depth.. they'd have a hard time cracking the top 9 on the Blues when they have a healthy roster (Thomas & Kyrou coming back)
Pietrangelo is a top 10 D in the league and he's never played better. I think you're in left field if you really think Armstrong would even listen to your offer</div></div>
Its a joke... like a really common joke. But Grant is an established 4th line guy. Not saying he has a ton of value, but guys like him are crucial for contenders.
I used the key work <em>possible</em>. He isnt right now, but he could be. He's just missing confidence. He was a point her game in SD last year at 41 points. Sprong is more of a mystery, he's always been projected as a top 6 scoring forward but vastly lacks success. At lower levels he's been a goal fiend, scoring 30+ goals almost always. He scored 14 goals on an incredibly weak Anaheim team last year. I'd say he still has potential.
That being said, this isn't about fair value. I think it's just a trade that makes no sense for either team. I do stand by the value of all the players I mentioned, but St Louis has no need of them. I think Grant could be a roster spot as 4C, but that's it.
A trade that does make sense? Fowler + a pick for Pietrangelo. Fowler is a LD, so we swap a LD for RD since we each need the other. He's signed to term, a little younger than Pietrangelo, and still a top 4 guy with solid offensive upside.
The reality of the situation is, Faulk got signed to a 6.5 mil contact for 7 years. Pietrangelo's 6.5 mil contract is expiring. Several RFAs are expiring, Binnington is signed for a couple years. Bouwmeester's contract is the only large one coming off the books next year. Gunnarsson is the only real LD on the team. I don't see Pietrangelo signing for less than he's making now unless he really wants to take a team friendly contract to try to win another cup. If it's not him, it's Parayko. Something just has to give.

I don’t think the Blues would ever trade him but you’re probably looking at Rakell + Steel to get a conversation started</div></div>
With the signing of Faulk, Pietrangelo is in a precarious place. Ducks arent offering nonsense in this trade, this is more than enough for a 29 year old D who will be leaving his prime soon and is on an expiring contract. Terry is a possible top 6 guy, Sprong could very well have a breakout still, and Grant is an all start ELITE 1C.

At the rate Miller is playing at, he'll probably be back next year too lol.
Even if he isn't, 3 mil for Greiss seems like a lot. I think with how the goalie market is these days, you can throw a dart at the board and find a decent backup for 2 mil or less. And if Gibson stays healthy this season, he's going to play 60+ games anyways.
I'm not opposed to Pysyk, he's pretty low risk. But Guhle and Larsson are not going to fill in the RD depth. With Mahura, Larsson, Guhle all LD prospects and Fowler and Lindholm the veterans, I see Fowler or Lindholm moved eventually. Fowler being the easier one to replace but harder to trade for fair value. I think going all in on Barrie, Deangelo, or another RD makes sense.

Todays Lines Per Elliot Teaford

I'm all aboard the "Scartch Ritchie" train. I think Eakins has higher expectations for him than RC did but he seems like the kind of coach who will bench under-performing players. Eakins rolls 4 lines so being up and down the lineup isnt really a punishment anymore.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mytduxfan</b></div><div>IMO, MDZ has been way better than Holzer and the Larsson - MDZ pairing has been solid. Not flashy, but just not a noticeable liability. I think that pairing should stick. Larsson needs more experience at this level and doesn't need to be hampered by a bad partner. Overall, I have been very impressed with Larsson. He gets flustered when put under pressure, but that's normal for kids not used to the speed of the NHL. Hopefully, by sticking at this level, he'll learn to deal with those situations. Once/if we can improve, he's going to be a very good D-first top 4D.
Getting a look at Comtois would be great. Jones has been pure energy, but I could see him being benched for Comtois.</div></div>
I feel like it's been hard for me at asses fully since Larsson and MDZ have been utilized less overall. Larsson is getting the fewest minutes and not much special teams time, which Guhle really isn't either. Other than a couple mistakes, Larsson has looked good overall. But he definitely needs more confidence and poise.
I think Jones just needs to score and he'll really get rolling. But I dont think sitting out a game would hurt him if it means Comtois gets some time. Jones is likely staying up all year so a few games sat out wont be bad for him.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>Sometimes making a sacrifice "for the good of the team" isn't all it's cracked up to be. If Fowler scores 8 goals from the right instead of 12 goals from the left, does the additional defense make up for that?
Anaheim has to figure out a way to fill the pipeline at RD. I didn't understand Jackson Lacombe over Kaedan Korczak in June. I'm already starting to keep an eye on Braeden Schneider and Daemon Hunt for next year. I wish we could get anyone ranging from Dylan Demelo through Scott Mayfield to Savard in Columbus, but we have no magic wand to wave because we can't afford a Hall-for-Larsson trade with Rickard Rakell.</div></div>
Agreed. I guess it depends on the net difference. There is so much math you can do to see if it makes sense. Like swapping Fowler and Guhle, if Fowler gets 8 goals rather than 12, put Guhle gets 6 goals rather than 1 or 2, its a net difference (but possibly a boost for Guhle long term). I think trading a RD for LD in general was just a dumb idea. Lindholm and Folwer arent likely going anywhere soon. So Guhle is either a bottom pairing LD or pushed Fowler.
I think other than getting more prospects through drafting, I think trading unneeded players could be helpful. Ritchie and Sprong could be casualties in that. That could allow a pick up a player of decent talent but no place.
Or we could see a Larsson/Hall trade of sorts. Even though he's captain of the Stanley Cup champs, Pietrangelo could see himself as expendable after the Faulk trade and signing. They have little Cap to spare and he's an UFA next season.
There are some decent <a href="https://www.capfriendly.com/browse/free-agents/2021/caphit/all/defense/all/desc/1/right">RD UFA's</a> coming up. Codi Ceci and Tyson Barrie are 2 solid names and given Torontos insane cap crunch, there is no way they can keep both. I think that really relies on the Ducks having a good season. Not necessarily a playoff run. But show the potential of the kids and be a good place to play.

Figure it out - With Trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>My one different takeaway about last night is the condition of the ice. It was 85 degrees here yesterday and the way our most experienced puck handlers -- Getzlaf, Lindholm, even Fowler at one point -- skated past pucks they already had on their sticks suggests to me that the ice was sluggish. Anybody else have an opinion on that?
I was glad to see both Steel and Kase on the ice for game one considering their questionable health status at the end of camp. Given that, I understand their rustiness.
I love Fowler, but if he's on the right side, he doesn't score the game winner last night. That goal is impossible for a lefty to make from the right circle. Putting him on his off side is like asking Mike Trout to catch -- he can do it, but eventually it's going to affect his performance negatively. For a defenseman, playing on his off side affects offensive output more than defensive strength, and we can't afford to lose even a smidgeon of Cam's scoring ability.</div></div>
I feel you on this a LOT. I'm torn I think. I like Fowler and Guhle together so far, its not a bad tandem. But this is not the first time Folwer has been put on the right side. It didnt work then either.

Figure it out - No Trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mytduxfan</b></div><div>Thanks for posting your thoughts on the game. In terms of the suggested changes, my view is that it is just 1 game and we should give it at least 10 games before we start making any rash decisions. Everyone looked a little sloppy and some guys are coming off injuries (Kase/Steel). Even Getzlaf didn't look all that great.
With that said, if we are making changes, I wouldn't mind seeing Lundestrom come up. Maybe we try moving Henrique to the wing, where he is supposed to be better. I just thought the Swede line was pretty good during preseason. Just a thought:
Comtois - Getzlaf - Kase
Rakell - Lundestrom - Silfverberg
Henrique - Steel - Terry
Shore - Grant - Rowney</div></div>
I think I agree a bit with what OldNYIfan said, since we have a large amount Hybrid Center/Wingers.
Your bottom 6, in theory, has 6 players who can or have played Center. Also Henrique is a much better Center than Steel. Steels FO% so far has been just terrible.
From Saturdays game I REALLY liked the Shore/Getz/Kase line. I didn't think I would but the line was dominant.
I also feel like Lundestrom just fits slightly more with the Swede line. He clicked just a little better.
I honestly think this team could see a lot of tweaks over the next few games because they are just having fun trying new things. It's great to watch.
