Should Montreal make a move for Gusev?
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>cmcnamed</b></div><div>Clarkson + Pitts. 2nd = 1 Year LTIR
No need to move Gusev.</div></div>
Even if this was a feasible trade (the one you proposed) they still do not have enough cap room to sign Gusev. Once Clarkson is off the books (85,024,999 minus 5,250,000) it still leaves VGK with a cap hit of 79.774.999. How do you squeeze Gusev in with 1,725,001 in available cap space and sign or promote 2 more D men with that amount of space?
Please elaborate.

Should Montreal make a move for Gusev?
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>cmcnamed</b></div><div>They will only move Clarkson's contract to sign Gusev.
No point in doing both.</div></div>
The only way they move Clarkson's contract is to add a sweetener like TOR did with CAR to get rid of Marleau's contract (They added a first round pick if I remember correctly). An "UNSIGNED" RFA would be the sweetener to get rid of Clarkson's cap hit. VGK still need to add 2 more players to their roster to hit the 23 man limit and signing Gusev is expected to be around 3.5 to 4M for a 2 year deal so that is a no go for them unless they move a BIG contract.

Montreal Canadiens signed Joel Armia (2 Years / $2,600,000 AAV)
The 2.6M seems a bit high but for a 2 year term it seems a bit more fair. He has seen is PPG and GPG rise every season since entering the league. Provided his injury from last season does not affect him moving forward he looks like his ceiling is still a bit higher. The contract also ends the same time the 2 new centers will need new contracts.

Boston Bruins signed Danton Heinen (2 Years / $2,800,000 AAV)
It's a solid signing by Boston from a team perspective as well as reasonable from the players side. They get Heinen, an up and coming NHL'er that has not yet reached his ceiling, IMO, at a rate that is pretty fair market value, whereas the player will come up for resigning at the same time that Backes comes off the books and the cap is projected to rise significantly with the introduction of Seattle and the new US TV deal. Smart on both sides.

San Jose Sharks signed Kevin Labanc (1 Year / $1,000,000 AAV)
Someone was going to have to take a haircut to bring Jumbo back and it looks like it was all on Lebanc. I'm sure the team will take care of him in other ways to compensate him for what should have been over 4 times what he is being paid.

Should Montreal make a move for Gusev?
Given the fact that VGK are in cap hell right now and MTL has ample cap space to absorb both a contract that will get Gusev signed, what would it take? My thought is that Montreal offer to take Clarkson's LTIR contract along with the signing rights to Gusev and in return the VGK get one of either Xavier Oullet or Cristian Folin and either a second round pick in 2021 or a third and 2 fourths in 2020.
I figure the number to sign Gusev is in the 3-4 mil range for a 2 year term and even taking on the 5.25M contract MTL would still have a bit of wiggle room when they send down Alzner at the start of the season as no one will touch that contract. The 2 year term will allow MTL to get a good sense of what they have in that player and the contract will expire at the same time that both Kokaneimei and Poehling are due their next contracts.
I know most folks think that targeting a D man is more important but with Juulsen, Brook, and Fluery on thier way, and will need spots in the next year or two.
Thoughts?

(MTL/CHI) - Shaw and 2021 7th round pick for 2020 2nd, 7th round pick, and 2021 3rd round pick
Seems like a good trade from a MTL perspective. While he is a "Heart and Soul" player his time on the sidelines is becoming a bit of a concern. While he was a valuable contributor in his 63 games this past season he missed at least 24 games in each season in MTL, missing 31 2 years ago. I'm not sure what the cap space is for but all in all I think MTL comes out ahead.

(PIT/ARI) - Kessel, Birks, 2021 4th for Galchenyuk, Joseph
I think its a good trade for both sides. In saying that I'm not sure what AZ is doing in terms of cap. AZ gets the best player in the moment but are getting perilously close to running into a cap crunch soon too. PIT gets an electrifying player that can never seem to put it all together for any period of time. All in all it seems like a push to me. The picks and prospects are a toss in IMHO.

They all have multiple listings for positions on their pages so that would be in the coaches hands. I would not dismiss the idea until I saw them on the ice together.

I can't see how CAR can lose on this. They gave up another forward that at best is a call up/fill in and the 5th is basically a dart to throw at that board from 100ft. This kid has speed to burn and should mesh well with Aho and Teravainen. If that line clicks look out. This was definitely not the player I saw VGK shedding due to his relatively low cap hit but it seems like a gift to CAR at this point.

(PIT/CHI) - Määttä for Kahun & 2019 5th round pick
Based on Kahun's playing partners I'd say he is due a bit of regression in PIT should he not be teamed with top line talent. Matta has been hampered by multiple injuries in the last few years and could grow back into the D Man he was 2 years ago if his health holds up and is given the right setting. I'd say it was a push.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>rangersandislesfan</b></div><div>First of all, you're not saying the Isles finish ahead of the Lightning, are you? Because if not, the Isles would play Carolina and the Lightning would play Montreal. I don't see any way the Islanders would finish ahead of Tampa Bay. Also, why do you have Tampa and Montreal playing in the 2nd round? Even if the Isles win every game and the Lightning lose every game (somehow putting the isles ahead of the Lightning), Montreal would play Washington in the 2nd round.</div></div>
Yeah I messed that up pretty badly. The copy and paste idea didn't work as well as I had hoped. I wish they would go back to the 1 vs 8 format!

I'm no Cap mastermind or anything but how can they make this work next year once they sign Stone to an 8 year 9.5 AAV. I can't seem to make it work and someone has to go. Even if they don't resign Karlsson it's still tight.

What is Romanov's KHL contract situation?
First off I never realized how had this info can be to find! From what I can tell he is under contract for one more year in the KHL as one of the more reputable sites I frequent puts his expiry date after next season but I don't say that with 100% confidence. Getting him on North American ice and not necessarily in the NHL is the big point here as the tighter playing surface and different angels take a bit of getting used to.

Do you give Poehling a few games this season if he leaves ST Cloud?
With the NCAA season coming to an end what do you do with Ryan? You could bring him up to the NHL but risk putting him in over his head to early. You could sign him and let him play in the AHL to get a few games under his belt to be ready for next season. While there is a chance the Rockets could make the playoffs its not looking good. My take is give him a few games of NHL seasoning if possible and let him go the AHL route to end the year unless he WOWs the team like Kotkaneimi? Thoughts?

Washington Capitals signed Pheonix Copley (3 Years / $1,100,000 AAV)
All of the chatter here surrounding Samsonov is a bit off base. Samsonov is still the goalie of the future in WAS in the same way Hart was in PHI at the start of this season. Signing Copley to this deal does 2 things. First off he is an affordable backup in the near future and has a cap hit low enough to be sent down without cap implications. Secondly when the expansion draft comes along he will meet the exposure requirements. Holtby's future contract will be decided when that time comes and as WAS has proven over the years they are not afraid to move goaltenders (Varlamov, Grubaer).

(PIT/FLA) - Brassard, Sheahan, and multiple picks for Bjugstad, McCann
All in all it looks like FLA may get the leg up on this one in terms of overall value should they flip both of the players they got by the trade deadline. In terms of immediate impact I think PIT got what they wanted and may be a more well rounded team heading into the playoffs. If FLA can turn Brassard and Sheahan into a few more draft choices with a 1st in the mix I'll. have to give them the edge. If Bjustad can turn it on in PIT then they may get the edge.
At this point FLA gets the best overall player in Brassard as Bjustad has yet to top 50 points whereas Brassard has done that twice. PIT gets younger with more cost certainty and FLA can add more at the deadline. If this is a move to get Panarin out of CBJ then watch out. I've read Panarin want to be close to the ocean and what better place than FLA. Not to mention that Brassard is an original CBJ draft choice and played there for 5 years....

(ANA/DAL) - Cogliano for Shore
Ducks get younger and save a million in cap space for a year and a half. The Stars get the better current player and pay million more in terms of cap hit. The Ducks get a player with some upside while the Stars get a veteran with speed to burn and defensive acumen. How each team reacts and deploys the players will dictate the winner.

St. Louis Blues signed Robert Bortuzzo (3 Years / $1,375,000 AAV)
No issues with either the term or dollar value. If they aren't happy with it in year 2, 3, or 4 they can bury him in the minors for a minimal cap hit of a few hundred thousand. If he gets claimed on his way down then they are free of the contract. This will also satisfy the exposed player criteria for the upcoming expansion draft in a few years. I con't really see much downside here.

(ARI / CHI) - Schmaltz for Perlini, Strome
I think at face value it is a fairly even trade. On the other hand with Domi posting solid numbers in MTL without a real upgrade in talent around him I have to think that Strome and Perlini may see a similar breakthrough. On the flip side Schmaltz will see more opportunities in the desert so at this point its a coin flip.
