Point taken, but I think they really need an above average veteran that is a stay at home/crease clearer. Maybe Jokiharju becomes that, but IMO hes more of a tweener type (not quite a puck rusher/not a crease clearer).

Forgot about Krebs, which means 1 of Dakota/Blueger isnt needed, although 1 of them is key. Theres still 7mil left, so even with raising Pesce to 6mil and UPL (still a RFA) to 2.5mil, still 5mil in cap space

Very true, but injuries to Quinn and meshing hasnt worked too well.
Forgot about Krebs so went with Krebs instead of Blueger, although one of Dakota/Blueger is still a need.
Cates had a bad injury and hasnt scored much this year, but really its about the type of player.
Looking at the above, theres at least 3 LW, 3 RW, 3C who can put up pts and guys who can move up and down lineup as needed, with guys like Cates/Greenway/Dakota providing some physicality and 2 way play and mentor the newest young guys.
Pesce (while maybe underpaid, theres plenty of cap left), Clifton and MacDermis (8th dman) are there to clear crease and allow Byram/Power and Dahlin to rush the puck, with Johnson as a high quality 7th.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Tbrew</b></div><div>A 7th and a 23 year old 7th rounder isn’t the same as a 4th and 5th for a guy that costs 1 million more in AAV to play himself into the same place MacDermid did. The press box.
And they can still find the same kind of player in UFA at an NHL minimum, instead of taking on an overpaid player who’s archetype is out dated</div></div>
If theres a better tough guy, who can play a regular shift and provide physicality out there in UFA for league minimum, by all means....
And while I agree the archtype is outdated, it still doesnt explain why NJD would acquire such a limited player as MacDermid, and I think you unmderestimate Deslauriers as a player, not just a goon.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Tbrew</b></div><div>Any team can find a Nicolas Despairiers for an NHL minimum in UFA, and probably a better version of him too, without giving up mid round picks</div></div>
NJD just gave up a 7th and a midlevel prospect for a UFA fighter who's a 14th forward/7-8th dman simply becauise they have a need. Deslauriers plays a regular shift, solid vet, one of leagues toughest, not to mention PK time.
A 4th TWO drafts away and a 5th THREE drafts away have pretty little chance to make the team, and certainly NJD have some pressures to succeed and phsyically compete against the Hathaways/Deslauriers/Rempes now, so future middling picks with little/no chance of helping them is worth what?

Leafs 24-25 Offseason Moves Win Now Scenario
ARZ turns down both those offers.
Jarnkrot is probably worth a 3rd at best, Robertson a low round 2nd, and a 3rd THREE drafts away? You're missing a 1st and 2 slightly better players.
Kampf is a slightly overpaid, hands of stone 4th line center and a 1st for a 25 yr old RD who has put up his 2nd 30+ pt campaign in 3 pro seasons (he gets a fairly insulting raise to 2.5mil)?
Just weak offers.
And Domi who has the singular UFA signing for Treliving that's actually delivered more than hes paid, isnt signing for less just for term. Hes on his 6th team in 8-9 years, and he'll get a raise
And UFAs (and their agents) generally dont take well under market deals for a year with a vague promise that theyll get more money on their next UFA contract from a team they've never played for

Offseason
Schmidt is bad and a waste of 5.9mil, especially as Ellis is on LTIR
That defense just is poor. Drysdale on RD3? Belpedio? Investing almost 11mil in Schmidt and Walker?
Jarnkrot? Zegras isnt a C, hes more of a LW. Youre going to play 3rd/4th line muckers Jarnkrot/Joseph/DiGiuseppe/Lycksell over any number of younger better guys?
Yopu've made alot of moves to move up in draft and then turn around and trade 3 1sts, a 2nd rights to Zavagrin and 3 players for Zegras? Thats a laughably OVER offer.
No Andrae, Tuomaala, Attard, but Belpedio, and a bunch of muckers?
Not buying out Johansen and Petersen and wasting almost 7mil in cap by keeping them in minors?
Just not sure what youre doing, trading alot of fairly young assets and picks for middling players and then going all in on Zegras? Seems like a lot of muck and downgradesd across the entire team just to get your hands on Zegras. If Zegras at 5.7mil for 2 yrs is worth that package he must be MacDavid.

SO a coach who has a rebuilding team in a top 6 position in the east over NJD, NYI, PIT, WSH, DET is questioned on his decisions?
Hes got a very young team, and he benches at will REGARDLESS of who it is, and you dont think the kids see the message there?
And, oh yeah, they won with having their captain benched.

Bertuzzi goes from 5.5mil to 4.5mil in a growing cap? (not saying hes worth it, but rarely does someone drop his price so much, especially when the cap is jumping up)
And one year of Petersen is worth a 1st and 3rd? PIT Accepts

Just dont think you'll get 2 second liners having very good seasons for 6.5mil
and that goaltending is not good/reliable

Offseason Series - Sabres
I like some of those.
Krebs and 2 2nds for Laughton (or the younger Cates) probably works for both teams and Laughton is a good 3rd line vet. And Dumba (or Tanev) would be a cheaper and possibly better stay at home/physical RD than Jokiharju. Not too sure about BOTH Maroon and Blueger though.
I'd rather see Greenway on 4th line and I would have one of rosen, Ostlund, kulich or savoie up. Maybe Benson-Laughton-Rosen and a 4th line of Kulich-Blueger-Greenway.
(as an aside, what about Krebs and 2 2nds (or one of the forward prospects instead of the picks if we're never going to call them up) for Laughton AND Hathaway: both are good physical two way guys)

I just cant see them bringing in THREE new RD and shipping out two younger RD. (and even though Walker and McCabe overachieved in offensive production this year, other than Reilly theres not much back there)
Roy, McMann as 2nd liners and probably even lesser returns on Reaves, Jarnkrot and Kampf?

Where would the Pens be if Hextall didnt mess up 21-22 offseason
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Billy316</b></div><div>More like because 9/18 skaters are different they're not
All the changes but no rebuild just means a revolving door of bad decisions trying to stay relevant.
Need Proof? Look at TML as an example . Until they rebuilt truly there was no success as there was no Matthews,Marner,Reilly,Nylander, ext
TML sold off everyone from those rosters basically and ran out the contracts they couldnt move and after like 2 decade they made it to the 2nd round of the playoffs.
With the pieces they got they could do the same this year as well maybe even hit a ECF but its TML so i doubt it and they'll likely choke lol
Point is PIT isnt rebuilding its just wasting time, valuable time of many future HOFers
You got Great D you likely couldnt move for any value worth it in Karlsson/Letang
If PIT was smart they'd Trade Malkin and Crosby for a stock pile so by their 39th-40th birthdays as their Contracts expire they can come back to PIT for 1 final run.
Karlsson and Letang would have 2-3 years to whip the new guys into shape and make them contenders.
I know MTL would give up a decent return for Crosby but im sure others would too
Malkin at his cap even at his age would draw a lot of interest and likely a higher return cause of the low cap with term.
PIT could re-stock their top 6 completely if they do it right and draft well in that timeline.
Otherwise the final years of 4 All Star HOF NHLers is going to be a sad decline</div></div>
The final years are already looking sad. Two straight years out of playoffs, no youth in system, acquiring every has been/never weres to fill in organizational holes, etc....
The pieces that they have that have value are the pieces they will not move: Croxby, Malkin, letang, etc....because they view their history tied to them (similar to the NYI teams of the 1980s), and the team will limp along outside of the draft lottery AND outside the playoffs.

I dont think thats enough for Koneckny AND 50% retention.
Holloiway is 22 yrs old, an expiring RFA, (who probably goes from 925k to 1.25mil, who over 3 seasons on a very good scoring team has just 13 pts in 83 games, and just 4 pts in 32 NHL games this year
The 1st is TWO drafts away and late in the round.
The 2nd is probably a nice mid round or high round 2nd, but again TWO drafts away.
I think they get better offers: higher in round picks or better prospect. Not bad but with 50% retention, I think they do better

Benoit-Barrie
Edmunson-Timmins
Barrie being a #6 would be fine. Especially paired with a guy like Benoit.</div></div>
I like Benoit, but hes so offensively limited. BUT he is the perfect guy for a Niemala.
Reilly needs a minute eating defensive partner like a Roy or Tanev. Tanev might come at a cheaper price, which allows for money to be spent on 2RD. (Or McCabe plays 2RD and you get an OEL (type))
McCabe is having a good year with the pts, but if Liljegren isn't the 2RD, thats the hole to address.
Timmins is too bad defensively to rely on, and hes in AHL or dumped
Reilly-Tanev
OEL-McCabe
Benoit-Niemala or Liljegren

Dont know about the defense, this season Treliving said there wasn;t enough offense on the blueline, and picked up Klingberg.
Lyubushkin, Benoit, Edmundson are all long shots for even 10pts each over an entire season. And McCabe/Tanev are really 15-20 pt guys.
Other than Reilly most of those guys cant even carry the puck.
And if the Leafs dont do well in the playoffs in 23-24, why would you bring back pretty much the same forward corps? (Reaves, Kampf, and Jarnkrot probably dont get better with age, and Woll/Fleury is just asking for injuries)

Building A Foundation Of Love And Success In Buffalo
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>littlejerryseinfeld</b></div><div>But why when we can sign 37 year old pat kane and 35 year old Adam henrique?
Kulich will play 5 ahl seasons apparently</div></div>
I watch BUF, always have (from Roch, NY), and I'm a bit clueless about their approach to actually making the playoffs and becoming a contender. And with the youth on the team, a perenial contender.
They have a ton of young guys who excel offensively, but they lack two way guys and strong defense first defensemen. Just counting on the guys here now to continue developing or get better isn;t working, and having guys like Rosen, Ostlund, Kulich, Savoie buried in minors (and having a full compliment of picks), shouldn;t be the answer either. There has to be some kind of effort/desperation/strive to actually compete, not just end of season spoilers to finish out of the bottom 10.
I'm not talking overhaul, and certainly dont get it, but Greenway, Johnson, and a ton of 4th liners surely wasn;t the answer in 23-24.
A guy like Laughton or Cates would be an improvement in the two way area, and Cates being young (and Laughton isn;t old either) means he can hang around longer than Kane/Henrique. I dont think with Skinner, Tuch, Thompson, Quinn, Cozens, Benson, JJP, and then breaking in 2 of 4 top forward prospects that you need offensive old guys like those 2.
A guy like Cates or Laughton AND a good stay at home/physical RD is needed (not Tyler Myers). I like Clifton but hes a nice physical 3rd pairing guy.
Clifton and Ryan Johnson might make a nice 3rd pair, but Samuelsson-Clifton probably doesn;t add enough punch/speed/offense as a 3rd pair and I just dont buy Byram-Samuelsson working. Maybe Dahlin-Power will work if they can play better defense, but Byram with a solid stay at home RD seems to be more of a need then Samuelsson, who is probably the odd man out.
Would PHI take Samuelsson and a pick for Cates (and maybe a rough physical guy like Hathaway)? Maybe Samuelsson and Ostlund for Cates and Hathaway? Keep the top 6 as is above, and a bottom 6 of Cates/Krebs/Rosen/Benson/Kulich/Hathaway/Greenway?

Cates is probably a bit more than that. PHI lacks centers, so I doubt they move one without a SLIGHT overpayment.
Jokiharju and a 2nd? Krebs and a 3rd, Ostlund and a 3rd, kind of thing....
At some point BUF has to find a spot for Savoie, Ostlund, Kulich at center though

Im not sure its as good a fit for PHI as it is for BUF.
As others have pointed out 3rd pair RD is not a need and PHI has alot of depth on RD and tons of cap space. They probably need a superior top and 2nd pairing vet (Pesce, Skjei, Hanifan, etc...), so Jokiharju isnt it, even if they move on from Ristolinen.
PHI needs Centers, so would gladly think about Krebs or a Sabres prospect like Savoie, Kulich or Ostlund, but Jokiharju isnt it.
And Cates, who came off injury very slow, isnt an offensive non-entity as 2022-23 showed.

Also, they'll either buyout Johanssen and LTIR Ellis and have 12mil in cap space.
ANd they wont buy out Atkinson, they'll either play him, trade him at 50%, etc...
So ultimately they'll either pick up a top 2 line center OR a top 4 dman
Laughton at 50% for 2 further years is worth a 1st and a bit more, Goodrow isnt an expensive buyout , maybe just Laughton and a 1st and 4th kind of thing
