Que the Haters
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Newtown</b></div><div>1. Overpayment from Carolina for Nylander
2. Not enough for Matthews. Matthews has more goals than anyone in the league since entering. He averages over 50 goals per 82 games.
3. Not nearly enough for Marner. Lindholm has averaged 56 point during his career. Marner is a 99 point Selke finalist.
4. Why would Toronto retain that much and give up a pick when a buyout is cheaper? Math.
5. Goalies are voodoo. Saros had the same save % as Samsonov and couldn’t even lead his team to the playoffs. It’s a huge risk investing in any goalie nowadays.</div></div>
With respect to #5) it turns out hockey is a team sport. Saros cant go out there and score goals. Nashville was 28th in goals for per game and 27th in shots against per game. An extra goal here or there is all it wouldve taken for nashville to get into the playoffs. Toronto scored 55 more goals on the season than Nashville did.
I would also add Saros has had an incredibly stable sv% across his career with .914 sv% being as bad as it gets across 7 seasons. No matter how terrible the team infront of him has been. Id personally say he is probably a good gamble.

Holl makes me worried every time he is on the ice, some days he is fine but there are times where his brain just goes AFK, i would rather spend more so he could be the 7th guy. Sandin may be smaller but he has the most Hits this season on the team

Addressing needs without chasing big name UFAs or giving up prime assets
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Goal_Dancers</b></div><div>I believe this scenario puts the Leafs at 53 standard player contracts, the limit is 50. Even NHL 23 wouldn't let you do this.</div></div>
This is a good point. I meant to make note of it in the description that additional lower-end prospects can be included in deal to make contract counts work. I usually do that but didn't think of it until after and didn't want to revert all the trades. (Dear CapFriendly, please add an edit trade function.)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Goal_Dancers</b></div><div>3rd, 5th, young goalie prospect for old goalie and out for the year forward. That one isn't adding up to me, regardless if Nyquist can come back and be free money.</div></div>
Since I asked for retention on Korpisalo (who is only 28 by the way) as well as the wildcard of Nyquist, I felt a 3rd+5th was fair. There will likely be a few teams looking to add him. I could drop it to a 4th+5th, but I feel CLB will want a 3rd due to the retention.

Physical and defensive grit is good for lineup matches. Jeannot plays 15 minutes TOI and takes hard matchups. Having a good and physical bottom 6 is great for wearing down your opponents and shutting them out, something Toronto's bottom 6 lacked last playoffs.

That's too much. Remove Minten or Niemela and make the 4th a 3rd and the trade becomes a lot more fair.

1 trade solves everything
So on October 1, Toronto might have only Brock Boeser to show for this trade, having meanwhile given up three first-round picks, a second-round pick, a developing defense prospect, and three players that have SOME trade value.
Even if they win the Stanley Cup, that STILL seems like awful asset management to me, because they're unlikely to get there again for several years after losing all of those futures.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Goal_Dancers</b></div><div>Correct me if im wrong, but there's no trade protection in this contract</div></div>
Pretty sure that is correct, at least for a few years. Tkachuk wanted to go to Florida, and held a lot of the cards. A 24 year old who is now set at 9.5M until he is 32. Florida gave up a lot to get him, so in a one for one swap, you need to go back and ask if they would have traded JH, Weegar, etc. for Marner instead.
- Based on age, maybe since Marner is similar in age.
- Based on stat production, you showed the two have similar numbers, so maybe. I would personally argue Marner had somewhat inflated numbers (not like he would fall off a cliff without AM, but a 60+ goal scorer and potentially the future best American born goal scorer ever helps).
- Based on contract length, no. MT was extended, Marner would have had three full seasons before deciding what to do after. Unless the Panthers said “3 years to win or burn it all to the ground,” they brought in an 8 year top three forward.
- Based on AAV, no. Marner is already over 10 million and due for a raise unless he declines significantly (hard to see happening). Tkachuk is locked in under 10 barring chaos changing something.
- Based on intangibles, no. Especially now considering everyone is up in arms that MM needs to go based on attitude and other factors. MT also has his baggage based on his play, but Florida doesn’t have the scrutiny on their players in the same way Toronto does.
Obviously, like you said you just wanted this for your ACGM team which is fair. There are definitely points to be made that can make it somewhat realistic. However, to say that Florida takes this and runs is neglecting numerous factors that don’t support your side.

Matthews secound given he's got 1 season left after next year
<strong>Like Gaudreau he's never really hidden his intention to play closer to home eventually</strong>
Marner's the only one it makes sense to invest in unless TML wants to end up like CGY in 2 summers from now

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Logan_Ollivier</b></div><div>And obviously you don't know what kind of player he is. That 2LW needs a guy who can go get pucks and get them to JT and Nylander. That is the biggest weakness Robertson has.</div></div>
Yeah, didn't even think about putting a tiny guy made of glass with a guy like Nylander. JT wouldn't have a problem being the guy digging in the corner, but he can never can seem to get there quick enough to be part of it. Maybe Knies can be that guy when he presumably signs at the end of the year(haven't watched him much but I'd hope a big boy like him would like getting into the dirty spots)?
I do think Robertson is going to be an important part of the top 6 if he can stay healthy - Willie probably wants a raise from his $6.9M after next season (from where, Willie? from where??) and the days of Michael Bunting being a sub-$1M first liner are quickly coming to a close. One of those two guys is moving on and Robertson should be able to step up into a scoring role.

He's good but I think he's not going to get the right role in TO. He needs to be a focal point on an offensive line and I just don't see it happening in TO.</div></div>
When I look at this depth chart I see such an obvious spot for him at LW2 with Tavares & Nylander but he's got to stay healthy. I think you start him in the AHL this year and make him force his way onto the team with his performance, but when he does you stick him right up there instead of letting him languish on the 4th line for 8 minutes a night. You presumably signed Engvall and Jarnkrok to be disciplined defensive forwards, so don't try and square peg them into being scoring wingers once Robertson proves he can be an NHL player.

But I do believe he wants to sign with major US market, yes that can be his spotlight . That can be LA, with a good team and cap when Kopitar contract expires.
So sorry to bring my opinion to this forum on two players who have the choice where they sign their next pro contracts. So please stop banging this homerism that the Leafs are entitled to keep all their draftees and all their UFAs.</div></div>
Matthews has stated repeatedly that he loves Toronto and wants to be a leaf long term, but sure thing
