Considering there is no clause and this AAV, I think it is a good move by MB. It is also making Petry a prime candidate for Seattle if his performance do not meet the expectations.
What I really don't like is that our top-2 D are getting old... really old :(

Not as a rental. Just like Mark Stone last year who signed during March. I also think that wingers have less value compared to the other positions but that's just my opinion.

Thoughts on trades with MTL amp NYR
Can Tyson Barrie play on the left side event tough he's right-handed? If so, MTL says yes 1v1 Barrie vs Tatar, simply based on the value.
I would even say that MTL would have to include another piece in the trade to make it fair.
But I don't think MTL would be willing to make that trade right now, unless they are 100% sure to add a big name like Duchene (for example) up front because they REALLY need the goals a player like Tatar provides.

Montreal Canadiens signed Nate Thompson (1 Year / $1,000,000 AAV)
I think this makes sense. Only one year and less expensive then his previous contract (He signed 2Yrs/1,65M with Ottawa). Thompson stated many times that him and his wife absolutely love the city of Montreal and he seems to get along well with other players like Tatar and Domi so that makes him a motivated player.
It also makes sense in terms of the lineup because it takes out Deslauriers or Peca off the top-12 assuming we sign Lekhonen and Weal.
That's how I think they see it AS OF TODAY (there migh be changes during summer) :
Tatar - Danault - Gallagher
Drouin - Domi - Shaw
Lehkonen - Kotkaniemi - Byron
Weal - Thompson - Armia
Scratches : Deslauriers, Peca.
Another factor might be that MB and CJ really disliked how it went with the 4th line last year. (Remember, we saw guys like Agostino, Chaput, De La Rose, Deslauriers, Hudon, Peca, Scherbak and Weise)

(MIN / MTL) - Bitten for Olofsson
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>kaljakori</b></div><div>Maybe don't trade Valiev and Taormina if you need AHL depth.</div></div>
Well, my main point is that Bitten is not a big deal (according to MIN's Twitter account he's not even a center btw) But you can also see it as :
Bitten
Taormina
Valiev
vs
Kulak
Olofsson
At the end of the day, I would say that we're better at D in the AHL and we got rid of a contact.

(MIN / MTL) - Bitten for Olofsson
I think that Bitten is a bit overrated. When he was drafted in the 3rd round of the 2016 draft, he led his team with 65 pts in 67 games. Two years later, he didn't really improve with 64 pts in 62 games without even leading his team in scoring (he was 3rd).
I guess it's a sign that MTL needed an AHL d-man because Despres probably won't sign and MB wanted to stay at 47 contracts. It would be a big, big surprise if Bitten made the NHL.

(CAR / BUF) - Pu and picks for Skinner
It seems clear to me that the asking price at the time of the trade was a 1st rounder for Skinner.
They obviously didn't get it and it reminds me of the Galchenyuk situation because MB wanted a 1st as well.
If I am a MTL fan, I am glad today that MB got Domi instead of a bag full of meh.

Vegas Golden Knights signed William Karlsson (1 Year / $5,250,000 AAV)
This case is so interesting and not so common considering his breakout season.
I think this is a good contract because no one can predict how it's going to play out this year for Karlsson.
He got a nice 5M$ reward for his 43 goals, but it's going to impact on his next deal if he doesn't replicate those numbers.
He's still RFA next summer, so good deal for both parties.

What if Marc Bergevino's 1 for 1s didn't exist?
I have to highlight that Radu's case is much different. MB stated in an interview that Radulov wanted 1M$ more then in Dallas even if MB's offer was the equivalent of Dallas' post-tax earnings offer.
Post-tax 6,25M$ AAV in Dallas = 8M$ AAV in Montreal. AND he still wanted 1M$ more then that.
So, in fact, Radulov wanted <strong>9M$ AAV for 5 years</strong> to stay in MTL. I would have been furious at MB's place too if I learned that this was his final demand.
Let alone 6,75M$ for 4 years...

Ottawa Senators signed Mark Stone (1 Year / $7,350,000 AAV)
So he is going to be UFA next summer, plus he cannot sign an extension before Jan 1st 2019... IMO this is looking really bad for Ottawa.
Let's keep in mind that :
- Karlsson's situation is not looking good.
- If Ceci gets a 1 year deal, he can go to arb next year then go UFA on July 2020.
- Duchene is UFA.
- Anderson wants out.
- And now Stone is UFA...
What a mess this has become.

I like that trade for Montreal considering they get a young LHD prospect that speaks french and some picks. Maybe it's a bit to much to give to MTL for Patch tho.
But my main issue with your proposal is that I don't see Arizona making that kind of move yet. I mean trading the future for a guy with experience that is in his prime right now.
What do you think?

Max Pacioretty trade proposal
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Eli</b></div><div>I think you're right that Montreal can live with picks and prospects, but having them retain salary on two players when you've got room under the cap for both isn't going to happen.
Teams are limited to retaining salary on three players at a time, so if MTL are thinking of rebuilding, this keeps them from retaining on Alzner and Weber at the trade deadline.
Habs fans' opinions on Jordie Benn are mixed, sure, but he alone is just about worth forsling, before you start retaining salary on him.
If the Hawks want more cap relief, and you don't want to indulge Montreal's need for a good center, toss in Kruger. Then you can still send that lowball offer to Nash, or pick something up at the deadline.</div></div>
I didn't know that teams are limited to retain the salary of 3 contracts at a time and that changes my perspective of course, but I still wouldn't be shy to retain on Pacioretty because his contract ends in 2019. I also like your train of thoughts about Kruger and Forsling. I think it would be a good move to include Benn and Forsling because the youngster has higher upside IMO and Benn is probably not going to resign.

draft trade for patch
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MTLaveragefan</b></div><div>eating patch's salary? he is a 30 goal scorer at 4.5M...
-> Florida will have 20M in cap space ... and Matheson is signed to a 5M extension -> So money is definitely not the problem.
-> We still give two 2nd round picks and Reilly (who has the same amount of points than Matheson.
this trade has a positive impact right away for florida</div></div>
Maybe I wasn't clear about a few things.
I agree with you that this deal would have a positive impact on the Panthers' lineup right away, but only on the offense. I think we can agree that even if Reilly is playing about the same average ice time compared to Matheson (21 min), it's only because he has some kind of chemistry with the best defensemen left (Petry) on a really bad team. I don't know where you saw that they have the same amount of points, but according to HockeyDB, Matheson has more points this season alone then Reilly over his carrer in the NHL. So they would need another LHD to fill the 2nd spot, but they have no other player coming up in the farm exept maybe Max Gildon who is their last year 3rd round pick, so he's still too youg for the NHL level.
Second, what I meant by money being a problem is not about the cap, it's about the ownership. 3-4 years ago, Doug Cifu said that his team was losing money with a really bad attendance rate of 14,177 in average. During last season, it was only at 14,620 so we can assume that the money issue is still there. That's why Borgstrom has an incredible value for that kind of team considering he signs his 3 year ELC while being nhl-ready.
Third, I get that 30 goal Patches is a bargain right now, but wait until he asks an extension at aroud 7-8M AAV in only one year.

draft trade for patch
As a MTL fan I say yes considering that it adresses our needs for a C and a LHD.
But I don't think FLA would agree to this. Eating the salary of Patch and Shaw is too much. Trading a first pick on ELC is a big deal too for a team that does not have that much money.

Realistic 2018 summer for the Habs (Well, mostly)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Habs4ever</b></div><div>I see your logic and thought process. I worked with Jonathan when he was in Halifax. He put way too much pressure on himself, being a local guy, donating money right out of the gate. He wanted to do so well but he is still only 22. Once he took the pressure off of himself and just played hockey he was much better. Not sure about last night's stats but the previous 10 games he was winning face offs at 62%, which is amazing. He should settle into a good 2nd line C.
As for A. Shaw, he is 175 soaking wet but plays the game as though he was 220. That works in Junior but not in NHL. Marchand had to change his game and as much as I dislike him, he has turned into a very good player. Shaw has had a plethora of injuries and his game is only going to go south. I would do everything in my power to move him. After this season, he has 3 more yrs at $3.9 M. You can move him on a package deal, add a player or two, or trade him for a 5th round. If MTL wants a higher draft pick like a 2nd, then it will need to eat some salary, say $1 M for next 3 yrs.
Also, Scherbak is not a 4th line player. He has the skill set of a 2nd line winger. Unfortunately his game is not consistent yet, once it is and he performs regularly he will force MTL's hand and have him move up. I hope he can turn into a consistent player because he does have some skills and from time to time, we see flashes of it.</div></div>
Yeah I get that for Shaw. I'm quite scared for the future about him and MB probably shares our concerns. But what would you do with that free RW spot if MB manages to trade him?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Habs4ever</b></div><div>Not bad, just some tweaking. I really do not see A. Shaw as a #1 RW. He never did that in OHL or NHL. He is more of a #3 RW. Personally I would try to move him. On D. If Habs get Dahlin, that would be amazing but I doubt it. I think Mete, Juulsen and reilly are all good adds and finds and will eventually be solid players. I like you kept Niemi, he has playe dlights out since coming to MTL.</div></div>
I totally agree with you about Shaw. But at the same time, I don't know what to do with him :
- It's not realistic to trade him considering the terms and injuries.
- I want to keep Drouin (if he's at C) with Byron and Gallagher because of the chemistry.
- Same with Galchenyuk and Lehkonen. I think Danault would be good with Galchy because he's north-south player.
- We don't have any other RW to play on top line in that case and Shaw played with Pacioretty this season showing some decent stats.
I wanna know what you think about this :)

Drouin for top 6 pick?
Considering the upside of Drouin, I think the value is there, but it would be pointless for MTL to do that.
The Habs need to win ASAP so while (considering the pick is ranged from 3-5) Zadina or Tkachuk MAY BE better than Drouin some day, why would you trade your home town guy who is 22 yo for a 17 yo especialy after throwing away Sergachev for him.
I'm very positive that Drouin is going to be better in the near future, he is WORKING hard and he was put at #1C when he's not really used to that position while playing with average wingers (No chemistry with Patch or Galch).
