Why is Buffalo sending a 2nd along with Greenway for a back-up goalie and a depth defenseman? Yet Philly is paying less for Girard. While I find some AVs fans overrate Girard, he has more value that Francouz and MacDermid.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hammerwise</b></div><div>Yes, I think its not so much selling low, as Mittelstadt on that roster is probably the 3rd line center at best, with Krebs probably able to take his spot quite easily. He had a good year, but hes probably not going to elevate his game much further in limited minutes, and BUF has the depth and quite a few prospects on the way as well. With Thompson, Cozens AND Krebs, thats 3 quality centers and BUF would be open to dealing from depth to address a weakness.
(Although retaining and slightly overpaying Zegmus and Okposo 4.5mil for 4th line minutes on a team full of forwards and forward prospects, shows a reluctance to move on, for Buffalo)</div></div>
I think the Gus/Okposo moves were more to maintain some vets in the room who are also leaders. Some of them nicknamed Okposo "Dad" which shows how fond of him the younger players are. They were only 1 years deals and that's probably the timing they see Rousek, Kozak, Cederqvist, Nadeau or some others being ready to fill those 4th line roles. They have a ton of forward prospects, but most need another year of seasoning, and many are top 9 or top 6 potential type of guys.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hammerwise</b></div><div>While I'd see the deals as fair value for the most part, I dont really think whats on offer might be attractive to the other teams.
For example, Backlund for Roslovic seems okay value, but for CBS it seems a sideways move at best, with roslovic having better trade value as an expiring guy who's younger. Or BUF probably wanting a RD instead of Hanifan</div></div>
Can't see Buffalo selling that low on Mittelstadt either. He gets grossly undervalued by many on here because it took him some time to find his game. $2.5m for another year then an RFA for a 60 point versatile forward that can play center or wing would be a valuable piece for most other teams. If he had his breakout at 22 instead of 24 the narrative around him would likely be much different, but as it stands Buffalo is better off keeping him considering what Granato has been able to get out of most of that young forward group. Played most of the season with an offensive black hole in Jost, and Olofsson who gave effort when he felt like it, was over a point/game when he filled in for Tage on the top line.

Win for both sides
Even if Hanifin was a fit for the Sabres, they aren't giving up all 3 picks in the 1st 2 rounds of the draft. Also Hanifin would need to come with an extension, they have not shown a willingness to trade for pending UFA's which would mean the picks wouldn't be in 2023 anyway.

Next Year Roster Prediction
Not sure why there's so much discussion over why Dahlin plays on the right. He doesn't exclusively play there, if you watch him and Samuelsson together they shift sides pretty regularly. Dahlin said he's able to produce more offensively from the right side, and often times will shift sides on the fly depending on how he reads the other teams defense. He works well with Samuelsson because Sammy is able to read what Dahlin is doing and adjust. This is where other partners for Dahlin have generally failed, they have trouble reading and adjusting to Dahlins play.
As for Hanifin including an extension, that can't happen with the 23 1st since Hanifin can't sign an extension until July 1st which is after the draft.

You're either really overvaluing Barabanov to the Sabres, or thinking they need to trade Olofsson. Buffalo has no real need for a middle 6 winger as they have a ton of them already, and scoring wasn't an issue for them last year. Maybe a contending team with no cap space would pay a decent price for Barabanov, but Buffalo I can assure you wouldn't.

Using the Provorov trade as a comparable
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>wojme</b></div><div>Still waiting for proof</div></div>
I've run it to test it out, and they should be perfectly fine with re-signing their current players (even Pesce). The only spot they could potentially run in to trouble is if they want to add any higher cost players either via trade or through UFA. This assumes players like Necas, Aho, and others take reasonable contracts and aren't looking for big overpayments which the Canes don't seem too fond of doing anyways.
When I put it together just to see, I figured on 9.5 for Aho, 7.5 for Necas, 6.5 for Pesce, 6.5 for Skjei, 6 for Jarvis and TT, and some smaller bumps for guys like Fast and Martinook, with a pay decrease for Staal. Doing that they still had like 10 million in space and around 20 or so in space when Slavin is due. That's pretty ample space to fill out a bottom 6, bottom 2 D, and a goalie when they also probably have some ELC's coming in during that time with guys like Morrow, Trikozov, Nikishin and others among their prospects.
Not disagreeing that it's probably too much from Buffalo, but I don't think they are trading him due to cap concerns with the upper limit so much as they are just not going to overpay where they view his value at.

good ol hawkey trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sabres89</b></div><div>I know, I know. I exaggerate. Although I wonder if jokiharju had a few pairs of thick socks on. I think I push for this because A) I don't want power and dahlin to have to be the muscle, and B) it's frequently in response to somebody offering an undersized offensive d, which doesn't make any sense for us. I agree, strictly speaking, the Sabres d isn't small.</div></div>
I think the issue at least in regards to grit is that they have it between Samuelsson and Dahlin on the 1st pairing, and when they dress Stillman and Boosh they have it on the 3rd pairing. That leaves a 2nd pairing that plays very passively, and neither Power or Joker are good at clearing the crease. Give Power a more physical partner and I think that balances things out a bit better. Also when guys get banged up none of Clague, Bryson, or Pilut were very physical.

Cap dump would imply negative or no value. Teams have to trade players for cap reasons all the time and while they may not get high returns still get something back. Bjorkstrand for example.

Agree on the grit and defensive ability, the size thing is very overblown though. Bryson is the only one who is small.

It comes down to affordability, and cap flexibility. Most of the ones putting him in ACGM's see him as providing more bang for the buck in cap flexibility than other cost controlled assets. McCabe at 2 million, Liljigren at 1.4, or Gio at 800k might not be as good as Brodie is for them most nights. They however provide less cap relief in a trade, and that means less flexibility in upgrading that group.

I'm not a fan of the Leafs, but Brodie is definitely not a cap dump. He's a pretty solid 2nd pairing Dman who can play both sides. His contract status might turn Buffalo off given he's going to be a UFA in a year, but teams will value him.

They definitely wouldn't. He has alluded to it being the Sabres or retirement, so I'd imagine the 1 year contracts will be the norm for him until he hangs them up which may end up being next year. Also some of the younger players were even referring to him as dad IIRC, there's no way they'd trade the team dad :tearsofjoy

Buf - Van Expansion cousins make a trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Aasen6</b></div><div>Too much quantity not enough quality going to Vancouver.</div></div>
Let's break this down.
<strong>Bear vs Jokiharju</strong> - Probably a wash. Bear looked better playing less minutes. Joker is younger, and played primarily with a rookie in a role he wasn't suited for.
<strong>Garland vs Greenway</strong> - It's been reported teams don't like Garlands cap hit. Solid player, but the cap hit is an issue. Greenway is a different type of player, less offensive upside but better defensively and a lower cap hit. Again I'll call this a wash, but neither hold a ton of value as middle 6 wingers.
<strong>Beauvillier </strong>- Solid middle 6 winger. But again, and as we've seen the past few years most middle 6 wingers don't hold a ton of value. Barbashev went for a former late 1st at the TDL when prices tend to be higher, Niederreiter went for a 2nd. Offseason trade would probably mean a little less value than at the TDL. Buf 2nd seems appropriate.
That leaves Demko for the remaining pieces. 13th overall, 39th overall, a former top 15 pick who just had a very solid 1st season in the AHL, and a goalie prospect who struggled a bit this season and would probably garner a 3rd based on past young goalie trades. so 2 mid firsts, a mid 2nd and a 3rd for a guy who just had the worst season of his career.
What more quality do you expect here? Do you think you're getting 1st round picks for Garland, Beauv or Bear? Do you think someone's trading you a prospect like Kulich or Savoie for Demko? As a Buffalo fan I'd have zero interest in anyone other than Demko, but if the asking price is higher than anything a recent goalie has been traded for you're probably pretty far off.
Trades with this many players moving are rare in the NHL anyway, outside of the deals for guys like Meier or Tkachuk.

CAMPBELL CECI DEPART TO CLEAR CAP SPACE PLUS BOUCHARD ON A BRIDGE DEAL
Have you even checked the Jackets cap situation? They currently have less than 6 million in space, and likely need to add another scoring forward to their top 9. Then over the next couple of seasons they have to re-sign Johnson, Sillinger, Marchenko, Texier, and a number of other RFA's along with guys like Roslovic if they choose to keep him. Adding a 4 million dollar back-up is hardly a good use of cap space, especially when Tarasov is more cost effective and outperformed Campbell on a much worse team who's defense was decimated last year.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sabres89</b></div><div>Problem with that is you don't have a center. You do have Greenway, okposo, and foegele as wingers that should be limited to 4th line. First off, we don't want any part of ceci, and Foegele should only cost a late round pick. The Sabres have kinda committed to okposo and Greenway, I just don't see an obvious spot for foegele right now.</div></div>
I don't believe they acquired Greenway to play on the 4th line. He's a guy who on the 3rd line can help create space with his size and playstyle and Granato believing he can get more out of him tells me he's not intended for a 4th line role. Also Krebs worked quite well as the 4C and playing the cycle game with heavy forechecking the way Gus and Okposo played really helped his game along, he started making less mistakes and was effective in that role. Maybe he's not meant for that role long term, but in the short term it's getting his development back on track. Remember Don doesn't role lines in a traditional manner, so being on the 4th line doesn't necessarily mean they will always play the fewest minutes.

I wouldn't be against Foegele as a potential replacement for Girgensons if he decides to move on from the Sabres. Not a lot of reason to compare him to Okposo since Okie is a RW and Foegele is a LW, the comparison would be Gus in my view.

I'd imagine any team trading for him would either want a sign and trade, or have already negotiated some sort of longer term extension with him. Trading the assets for a plyer without knowing what the contract will look like would be shooting themselves in the foot, especially with all of the chatter the past year of him wanting to be in Montreal.
On the other side of that it behooves PLD to be open to more than just 1 team. If he handcuffs everyone and says he'll only play for the Habs, Hughes can very easily lowball him on his contract demands and say well if you want to be a Hab this is what you'll have to take, or what you'll need to leave on the table to be here. Opening it up to more teams means he has a better chance of getting the contract he wants even if it's with Montreal.

If you did your research you'd know that Fletcher isn't the GM of every other team in the league. These trades are brutal.
In regards to the Buffalo trade. Greenway isn't a cap dump, Buffalo didn't trade for him to play him for 17 games and dump him, he was traded for because Granato felt he could get more out of him. The Sabres also don't have cap issues. Laughton is a decent player, but he doesn't produce like a top 6 player despite playing top 6 minutes. He played over 18 minutes a game and was barely above .5 points/game. He had similar production to Victor Olofsson who played 4 minutes less per game.
