Wouldn’t work for salary purposes. VAN doesn’t have the space for Greenway’s full freight.

Cup Contender
Why in God's name would VAN give up all of their depth in goal and future (draft picks) for 2 pending UFAs who they cannot afford to sign?

Tanev comes home
Even as a Canucks fan, I say, "no thank you". 1.) he is a pending UFA that will likely demand dollars that VAN cannot afford this offseason with needing to resign Pettersson, Hronek and potentially other UFAs (Cole, yes even Myers) 2.) Jet Woo has no value other than AHL depth and 3.) VAN can't keep giving up 2nd round picks like they are candy at Halloween - even if it meant moving off of Garland's (slightly overpaid) contract.
Garland is actually doing what he has always done - drive play - as a playmaking winger on the Suter line. If he goes, that line's production will drop off precipitously. There are other wingers that VAN should look into moving first - like Beauvillier who is a UFA and will not likely resign here in the offseason.
Yes, VAN needs to address it's 2nd pair RD, but this is not the move.

Who is the best fit
Depends on cost and what VAN is looking for. I really like Hughes/Hronek as a pair, so am less inclined to look for the old-school thought of needing a "stay at home" type to play on the top pair with Hughes.
VAN needs a 2nd pair RD who can elevate to the 1st pair if and when injuries occur. Those guys are expensive to acquire (as seen in the original Hronek trade).
That's why I think they are going to wait it out and sign Bear. He will be cheap and will only cost cap space. They need to free up more space by moving out redundant pieces like Beauvillier / Garland and that has proven difficult. As fun as trades might be, I don't think VAN can afford to give up 1sts at this point - maybe closer to the TDL if they are still solidly in playoff contention (a top 3 division spot, not a WC).

Who would you trade the 2024 1st for
It's unlikely any team would be able to offer a cost-contolled, true top pairing RHD or speedy with size RH3C / PKer to VAN so the short answer is nothing. VAN has a terrible prospect pool. The team needs to create opportunities for affordable and controllable players to make their roster over the coming seasons. They already have money and term tied up in a plethora of wingers. They need more 'lottery balls' to hit.

Ugh. With a team already stacked with a plethora of 3rd line wingers, all on deals with money and term, why would VAN do this? Kapanen obviously has negative trade value as he was placed on waivers and PIT media has made it abundantly clear through the season that he has been available for trade.

Similar to other responses on the value of Centres over Wingers. The inclusion of Nemec doesn't solve for where VAN is also lacking right now - depth down the middle. They have a plethora of scoring wingers in Kuzmenko, Miller, Boeser and Garland (who they are already paying above market value for); that doesn't include the scoring wingers on entry level deals in Abbotsford in Podkolzin, Hoglander and Klimovich. If Pettersson was a target, VAN would probably look for someone like Mercer, Nemec a '23 1st AND '24 1st.

Really? The Leafs don't need an elite, cost-controlled goaltender for the next 3 seasons. Yeah, Demko has been shaky this year, but having watching Canucks games, so much of that is the team around him giving up a ton of East-West passes in-zone, odd-man rushes and scrambly play. The guy literally doesn't know what read to make because his defense is so poor.

My take was that BUF would acquire Myers and play him as a 3rd pairing guy (where arguably, he would have most success); you don't pay a 3rd pair $6M. The salary retention is an olive branch to get a better asset in return.

Totally agree. But I look at the negative value he is providing to the team night in and night out. I would rather that he not be in the lineup at all - unless it guarantees a bottom 3 finish and one of Bedard, Fantilli or Michkov.
I don't wish ill on a player, however wouldn't object to him developing an allergy to his hockey equipment that is so debilitating that he has to go on LTIR. Never seen anything like that in the NHL before, right?

I’d be hesitant to give 5yrs to a 30yr old. The Canes have recently been burned by giving Gardiner 4yrs. It’d have to be a very special player on the wrong side of 30 for the Canes to consider an 7-8yr extension. Miller just ain’t it.</div></div>
Jeez. I agree this is a young players game, but the way people write about JT Miller, it seems like the Canucks should just take him behind the shed and treat him like Old Yeller.

Canes have cap space to resign him. If they invested limited assets in Brent Burns and Max Pacioretty, and paid on promise for a 3rd line Centre in Kotkaniemi, they likely would invest in a PPG player like JT Miller.

Wet Blankets
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>tea</b></div><div>I do like the Caps trade, I think I suggested a Lapierre-Jensen trade a few months ago, but I do like Eller as a shutdown 3C who can kill penalties, sort of like Jordan Staal in Carolina, and Iorio is the kind of RD prospect. Schenn probably places over Poolman in the depth chart as of right now, especially in a 3rd pairing role. I also don't know that JBD is quite ready for a first pairihg role.
Imo, if we can keep Miller for something like a 7.5*6, it's probably a good idea, considering he might fetch meager returns, but if one or two of Podkolzin, Kuzmenko, Hoglander, blossom into top 6 guys, with Garland, Boeser, and Mikheyev, trading Miller to bolster our defense is a good option.</div></div>
Yeah. Making a big leap of faith that players like Podkolzin, Kuzmenko progress and Hoglander returns to form. If Miller is traded, it will definitely create a hole, which I am sure is why he hasn't been traded yet. VAN is not confident that the players remaining could fill the hole without getting a return of a "now" player, along with the futures. Typically the team trading the star always ends up on the short end of the stick. I think at this point, the $7.5M signing is a pipe dream, especially with the announcement of the increased cap in '24. The team, IMHO, should cut bait with the best possible offer prior to training camp.

See there? Ottawa has 6 guys in the top-65 and several other guys who could get there
Watson is not costly and UFA at the end of the season, they will want to keep his veteran presence, he doesn't have a lot of value in a trade anyway
Ottawa has no interest in this. Garland to Ottawa has died when they traded for DeBrincat and died another time when they signed Claude Giroux</div></div>
I appreciate your comments. I like OTT's depth, and you are right that they have solid on-paper depth in their top 6. I also made an assumption that some of that depth may be compromised due to an on-going investigation into a certain incident that has been in the news cycle through the summer months. Independent of that, it never hurts to have NHL scoring depth at a cost controlled number. Looking at my own team, who have professed to have depth in spades at the start of each season, only to have unforeseen injuries or COVID derail it.
I think Garland is a good piece who like I noted, scored at a 1st line pace while essentially getting 2nd/3rd line ice-time. He alone would justify the return for a player like JBD who hasn't reached his potential yet PLUS a first round pick. I was generous and assumed that OTT would prefer the '24 2nd round in exchange.
As far as Watson's inclusion, it was more of a numbers game PLUS a player like Dermott could slot in and support the Sens right now - which is why Dorian and company made right now moves like signing a 34yo Claude Giroux, traded for 35yo Cam Talbot, while also stocking for the future by trading away Matt Murray to the Leafs. If OTT is out of the playoffs or want to move in a different direction, they could flip Dermott at the TDL for picks or prospects. OR as an RFA, they have a measure of cost control that would allow them to accommodate salary increases to other RFAs (and more prominent ones) like Tim Stutzle and the aforementioned Alex DeBrincat.

Part of me thought about a similar type of offer where OTT offered a pick for Pearson. But let's face it, Bottom 6 wingers are a dime a dozen in this market - particularly if they are on a contract with term and dollars attached. If it were a RHD, I would tend to agree with you; teams will pay because those types of assets are few and far between. At end of day, I just think he is a redundant asset, particularly if you are looking to give Mikheyev, Podkolzin, Kuzmenko and Hoglander more prominent roles.
