I like this trade. As a Habs fan, I think we need a forward and Barron can be good to trade away.

Monahan trade to Edm
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Dom1422</b></div><div>We wouldn’t take Campbell, but if we did it would cost them a lot more than that. Yeah my though too but needed to try to make cap work they could definitely do something with 3 teams where montreal retains 50 then another team then monahan costs nothing to the oilers

Monahan would help improve the Jets 23rd ranked PP, and can still be a solid 3rd liner for them. Absolute worst case scenario he’s an infinite times better depth option than Stanley, who’s absolutely awful

Kings give up on PLD for playoff push
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Dom1422</b></div><div>I hope everyone realizes that the Kings are not going to trade Dubois after trading for him months ago and giving him a long term contract. If I’m not mistaken that has never happened before. And nobody is going to trade for him and make that commitment to a player they’re unsure about.</div></div>
I also think most people don't understand what Calgary is likely to do. Between prospects and signed players, Calgary has most of their key positions filled for the foreseeable future. They're probably trying to fill some of the remaining holes with young unproven players and prospects by trading pending UFAs, with the hope of being competitive in 2 or 3 seasons.
Calgary is not going to be running a fire sale, taking on bad contracts, to tank for the next decade in the hopes of being good some day. The only way Calgary takes PLD is if LA takes Huberdeau, and I don't see LA accepting that swap.

Mix things up
well this created some chatter. When I said mix things up, that is not what I really meant.
I urge all the anti-Struble comment makers to actually watch him - he would truly be an upgrade for Van over Ian Cole (who is a negative asset). I feel there will not be room on the Habs' left-side for both Struble and Wifi, and it has been reported that Wifi is not on the trade board. With Stuble comes stabilty and predictability in ownership of his contacts, and Ian Cole is negative asset.
Monahan is likely worth a late first plus a B prospect.
Ian Cole needs a 4th or 5th to dump (which makes room for Monahan)
Stuble plus a 2nd is equal to Lekkerimäki - give or take
So argue away, but the value is pretty well lined up - only thing I might change is some retention on Monahan contract.

Who wins
Buffalo wins because they have so many up and coming talented forwards that giving up Mittelstadt does not hurt as much as it does for Montreal to give up their starting goalie and best young right shot defenceman prospect

A Basic TDL
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Dom1422</b></div><div>Another reason for this is when you’re making the playoffs you plan for that 1st round pick to be in the 20’s.and that 2nd round pick to be late as well. Every team is planning to make a deep run, whether they do or not. A late first round pick is a coin toss. Like 30% chance they even become a regular nhler in your bottom 6. And the late 2nd rounder is probably less than a 10% chance.</div></div>
And most ignore the difference between a pick in the top 10 against the value after 22 picks where you have about a 7% chance of the pick becoming a star whereas a top10 has about a 30-50%
Not all 1st round picks are made the same.

TDL prices balloon the cost meanwhile the offseason you cant even give away a top 6 player. It's been this way in the cap world and its groundhog day at every TDL. You pay more for assets short term when you know that you can use them for a playoff push whereas that isnt a certainty in the offfseason where teams are lukewarm to spend on anything.

Guhle has showed he can take the right side. The handiness is overrated, its a Mike Babcok principle that everyone just accepts as the norm.
And, on the right, you have Reinbacher coming and Mailloux is developing nicely as a PPG D in the AHL with a Xhekaj-Mailloux pairing.

Monahan >>> Kuzmenko
Stephens <<< 2nd. (Late 2nd isn’t that valuable)
It’s unfortunate how the Canucks are deploying him because he would be worth quite a bit more if he were producing. But they’re deploying him that way because Tochett doesn’t like his game (not to many coaches will like him)
Unfortunately he has a M-NMC so that limits who he can be traded to. He’s a liability defensively so that limits who would be interested in acquiring him, and in the lone season that he did produce, he was shooting at 27% which is obviously not even close to being sustainable. He’s a negative asset. Vancouver would have to pay someone to take him, or if a team is willing to pay, it’ll be at a low cost. It’s why he’s not already traded.</div></div>
He rolls through everything Montreal to troll about Monahan with the inflated confidence that Vancouver is on a heater.

Trade
As a neutral observer, this return doesn’t seem too far off for a guy who says he wants out. (I assume Vancouver isn’t trading Pettersson unless he wants out.) The only change I’d make is move the 1st-round pick to 2024. 2025 is too long to wait for a team that isn’t thinking rebuild. Top 5 protection seems reasonable.
For Montreal, it doesn’t necessarily have to come with a long-term extension, but they’d have to think they have a reasonable chance to sign him long-term. In that case it would be a calculated risk, like when Ottawa traded for Debrincat. Depending on where the 1st-round pick ends up, this package is probably going to be a lot more than Ottawa gave for Debrincat, but Pettersson is a lot better than Debrincat.

Wasn't really a legitimate trade. I just don't see why habs fans on here should target zegras. It makes no sense considering you have a possible young center core of Suzuki, Dach, and Newhook. Giving up any future asset just seems a slap in the face on what Hughes is building.

Dubois trade
Montreal isn't adding Farrell to a PLD trade, think Kidney + the Panthers 1st + Armia or Hoffman. Jets probably pass on that too though, since they want Suzuki + Caufield + Hutson + Dach + both Habs 2023 1sts, and Windjammer likely says that isn't enough anyway!

By the summer, it could just be a Dach for PLD one for one swap.
"It's not fair, PLD is the better player"... except for one thing: Montreal has the leverage in the deal. In fact, they may take Dach off the table because of how much leverage they have.

Everyone in the business is saying there is a deal behind closed doors and knowing Lou he wouldn’t trade that much for a rental and we likely won’t hear about the extension until August. You can either accept to believe that, or not doesn’t really matter.
As for Dvorak, if he is a 4th line C then Beauvillier is a 4th line wing and still just as valuable if not more.
It doesn’t really matter where Farrell was drafted because prospects trend upward or downward post draft. If that is your argument then we can swap out Farrell for Kidney who is a 2nd rounder just like Ratty.</div></div>
This user is on my ignore list but does he not realize that Farrell is actually ranked 2nd best prospect on the Habs and top forward lol?

Buffalo deadline
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Dom1422</b></div><div>That said he is going to be on the 3rd pairing behind Hamilton and Marino. So not as important as he once was to them.</div></div>
First part of your comment I think is correct, but it seems to me you're not fully aware of why Severson has been on the 3rd pair on the Devils for a lot of this season...
There was always gonna be a top 4 RHD playing on the third pair for the Devils, either Marino or Severson.
To decide which one should play 2nd pair and which to play 3rd pair two questions need answering...
1. Which of Marino or Severson has the best chemistry with Graves, the Devils 2nd pair LHD, and...
2. which of Marino or Severson has the best skillset to offset Brendan Smith's shortcomings?
The answer to question 1 is Marino.
The answer to question 2 is Severson.
Severson didn't find much success with Graves (and vice versa) in 21-22 therefore it was always gonna be Marino winning the 2nd RHD job over Severson.
However Marino wouldn't be able to help the Devils tilt the ice as well as they do playing with Brendan Smith, but Severson can do that (and he's doing it really well).
The result is that the Devils have three pairs that are all heavily contributing in creating very favorable playing conditions for the team as a whole, at all times.
It's not down to any shortcomings of Severson that he's seeing less ice-time, a sharp decrease in box score production and getting more oz starts.
It's because Severson is busy keeping Smith's head above water while still driving play.
There are not many third pairs in the league that play contribute as much as the Smith - Severson pairing, and that's all down to the very important role Severson is playing here.
This is not to say that Smith is a terrible NHLer, in my view he's been playing to the level of an above-average bottom-pair guy (which is a big step up from what Ty Smith contributed as 3LHD last year).
Smith is pretty good at rush defense, winning puck battles and in-zone coverage.
But he is not very good with the puck, whether it be carrying it, passing it or shooting it.
That's exactly how Severson complements Smith, and he does it to such a degree that the 3rd pair is overall a significant net positive.
