New coach New look Stars
I'm okay with this. Lines look fairly close to how it could look (assuming that this is the roster on opening day), though I will say not a fan of two PP units with 4 Forwards and 1 Defencemen (but maybe it is just me). Janmark will be more $ over longer term than what u have here; think more of 4+ years for $4M - ish) as well Johns will be a bit more and a bit longer (3-4 years for $2.5 - 3 M). The other deals look good. As for the trade with MTL, I agree with Burgerboss92, Spezza will not waive his NMC for MTL and tbh he may actually fit in with the new coach's "possession" game rather than Hitch's dump and grind style last year so he may actually stay. Also I'd rather also have 1 year of $7.5M or 2 years of $3 M (I forget what the buyout rate is so this number is a guess, my bad) than 4 years of $3M and a position jam with Alzner when we have guys like Heiskanen, Heatherington, and so forth ready to grab an NHL spot. Lastly, Backup goalie? Bishop is great and all but he does get injured and will need help. Overall, not bad. Minor adjustments and this looks ready to go.

Stars makes a splash at home during the draft
I would also pass. Like you had said Janmark could be the next Karlsson from Vegas just waiting to hit his stride. And like Burgerboss92 said, he's younger, plays centre and wing, contract will probably be better than Pacc will be and has a way higher potential than Pacc rn. Plus the first round is way too much for a guy who isn't overly needed. Not when FA has guys like JVR, Neal, Kane, Perron, Vanek, Grabner, Nash, etc.

Sounds fair to me.</div></div>
And yet no one agrees with you. Like others have said Klingberg is producing at around the same rate has Karlsson (so no upgrade here) and JVR can be signed at a later date without losing anything. Good thing this is only fantasy

Still Amazed
Stars Fan
While the Buffalo - Dallas trade doesn't have me shaking my head no right away, I still would probably say no to this as Klingberg is that important to us, we have decent prospects who can play centre (a lot are actually playing wing in the NHL and AHL), and the FA is fairly good (looking at the wingers as this is the position that really needs to be filled) to grab someone and fill a role. O'Rielly is a great player to have (I would have him as the clear cut #2 centre and let Seguin stay as #1) on any team's roster, I just wouldn't do it this way as the Stars GM. Still, good proposal. Better than a lot of the other ones I have seen.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Insanewolf11</b></div><div>Perron and Neal will re-sign with Vegas, Vanek is 34 and will start to get slower and score less, Evander Kane is a toxic teammate, grabner might be the only player here who i would suggest they sign, but as a compliment to JVR on the second line, he could probably be signed around 4 mill. Also Spezza had 26 points last year in 78 games, Dallas needs to dump his salary so they can make some impactful moves this offseason which they desperately need.
<a href="http://www.nhl.com/stats/player?report=skaterscoring&reportType=season&seasonFrom=20172018&seasonTo=20172018&gameType=2&filter=gamesPlayed,gte,1&sort=goalsPer60Minutes" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">http://www.nhl.com/stats/player?report=skaterscoring&reportType=season&seasonFrom=20172018&seasonTo=20172018&gameType=2&filter=gamesPlayed,gte,1&sort=goalsPer60Minutes</a>
Only 2 full time players last season beat JVR in Goals per 60. Laine and Matthews.</div></div>
Fine, let's suppose that your assumptions are correct (Perron and Neal go back, Vanek slows down, Kane is a toxic player (though some players have proven the media wrong), and Grabner is the only decent player. That right there is enough for me to avoid this whole dump of a trade and go after someone who won't cost me my roster of now and the future.
Also, Stars fans know that Spezza's deal needs to go, there are other ways of losing that contract (Buyout, minor trade with a team that needs a C for a 4th or 5th rd pick)
Lastly, there are other players in the Stars lineup that you did not include that can score goals.

I also say no.
Klingberg is two years younger, on a super amazing contract (4 more years at $4.25M vs 1 more year at $6.5M), and has always improved with each passing year. If u really want to get technical Klingberg had more points this year than Karlsson (67 to 62).
JVR is a FA and while yes you would have to "get in line" he isn't the only good winger available. He may be the most desired and all but let's not forget that guys like Perron (66 pts), Vanek (24 goals and 56 pts), Evander Kane (should he not sign with SJ he's a 30 goal scorer easily in Dallas), Neal (consistent 20+ goal scorer who has hit 30 before), Grabner (27 goals this season). All in all, I'm not trading Klingberg and Spezza to get an FA that still might not even sign with Dallas and there is no reason to.
In the end, a three-way trade that sees us getting JVR and Karlsson but losing Klingberg, Spezza Gurianov (a prospect that I think will turn out great once he gets comfortable with North American hockey; He showed huge leaps of improvement throughout the season in the AHL), and a 2019 1st is way too much.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caps_Man</b></div><div>I'm not too focused on the lines...just the pieces. Also Berra is just depth in case Rittich gets off to a rough start</div></div>
Fair, but I'm still a unsure about the Nyquist trade actually working. Would you then have Berra on a two-way contract? I know CapFriendly doesn't have that as an option but just curious. Dallas does have some decent Goalie prospects in Bow, Point and Oettinger so I like how it is only for a year and Rittich is only two.

Stars Reasonable Offseason - Armchair GM series
3/5 for me.
Good: Trade for David Rittich is new and interesting for me. Limited North American hockey, but would be a high risk, high reward type player.
Roussel, Shore, Heatherington, Dickinson, Elie, and Ully`s contracts all look good and about right.
Signing Brooks Orpik (part 1 of 2)
Finally, the young F are getting some playing time
Bad: The lines. Top line is dead right...after that I`m not so sure. Hanzal will more than likely not be able to start the year. Heatherington should be playing in the lineup or not in the NHL roster at all, the young D need to play. Roussel - Faksa - Pitlick line was a third line (sometimes a second line) not a fourth line.
Reto Berra?
Brooks Orpik playing over some prospects (part 2 of 2)
Janmark and John's contracts are a little off. Janmark is probably 5 years (like u have) but $4-4.5M and Johns is more 3 years $2-2.5M
Unsure: I like the trade to get Nyquist but in order to do that, U needed the picks from Vegas. Spezza is a piece going to Vegas. Keep in mind Spezza has a NMC (Vegas is nice so he'd probably waive it) and Vegas has to accept the trade. In the end, I don't know if this would happen. I like it, but too many ifs and maybes.
Overall, not bad. Some adjustments needed but I could live with it. I'm enjoying the series so far.

Honestly I don't think any of those piece would fit the bill. Larsson is also averaging 14-16 pts per season. Dallas will go to FA and go for a guy like JVR, Neal, E.Kane (if available), vanek, Nash, etc. to hopefully get 50+ pts. That's the kind of guy they need. Plus I think Buffalo could easily find someone like Remi in FA too. If a trade was to happen between Buffalo and Dallas, it starts with O'Rielly or maybe Rienhart.

Sabres 18/19
"The Dallas deal was based on the Stars looking for some defensive help and depth forward who can play up and down the lines. In return the Sabres get a young prospect."
Stars fan, I like the idea around the trade. However, Dallas was 4th in Shots Against per Game, 7th in goal against per game and total goals against, and 14th in PK (PK not great but top half with young D), so D isn't a real concern anymore. Just need the young prospects more experience experience and soon all of those categories will be top 5. As for the depth forward, you are 100% correct. After Benn, Seguin, Radulov, and Klingberg there was a big drop off. Dallas was 18th for Goals For and Goals for per game, 19th on the PP, and 21st in shots for per game. The only shiny stat was faceoffs which they were 4th. The only thing is, those areas wouldn't get fixed by a guy who has been putting up 15-18 pts in the last few years. Regardless, the trade is a no for me but I am entertained and would stay by phone waiting for your next call.
Don't know enough about Buffalo to comment on lines or anything like that, so no rating from me for that reason. My only question is what would you do with Elie who you just traded for?

The trade I'd most like to see with Dallas
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MajesticWalrus</b></div><div>A huge cap dump and a bust of a prospect for Lind who will actually be great and gudbranson who is millions cheaper than spezza....how lopsided in Dallas' favour. And MDZ would get way more than a 6th. AHLers get 6th. Starting players get 1st-3rd round picks maybe sometimes a 4th if they're scratched a lot which MDZ isn't, if anything he's important as he plays on both special units.</div></div>
Personally as a Stars fan, I disagree. Spezza has 1 yr left on his contract and will (if not traded) be bought out for two years at $2.5M, while Gudbranson has three years at $4M (in short, Gud costs more). Dallas also wouldn't have any interest in getting another D has we have some good prospects waiting to play, including but not limited to Bayreuther, Hansson, Heiskanen, Heatherington, and ... Honka. Speaking of which I would have Honka over Lind any day. Honka has NHL experience, and has a place in our top 4. Lind, although has put up impressive numbers in the WHL, has no AHL experience let alone NHL experience (six games isn't enough for me). This would mean that since Spezza > Gudbranson and Honka > Lind that Vancouver is the one with the lopsided end.

I agree with everything that everyone else is saying. This makes no sense. Period. IMO u can't compare a trade to another. Every Player is different, every GM is different and every teams needs are different. Dallas needs depth not to rebuild. Depth is 100x easier to get than Elite or Superstar players hence why more minor trades are made. I would also be willing to argue that this makes no sense for Washington. This is just bad.

Minor...ish trade with PHI and a small deal with DET
I think the only way you will get Philly responses will be to do it with a Philly roster. From a Stars POV, I'm cool with it. Losing Nyberg is a unfortunate but you can't ship a bad contract for nothing and like you said he has plenty of upside to be a good future piece to any team. Receiving Neuvirth in return is also reasonable, and I think he would have a good season or two in Victory Green. The JVR deal is almost certainly be front heavy to avoid another "Spezza" deal.
The only thing I have to ask is why sign Dennis Seidenberg? Hamhuis and Pateryn had good seasons with Dallas last year, know everyone in the lineup, and would also fill the 7th D void nicely. Otherwise I enjoy reading your scenarios

While some people believe shot side matters for which wing you play, I found in my personal experience that wing is the same no matter which side of the ice you are on. And on top of that, I am a LH W and had some of my best seasons on the RW side. Stick is in the middle of the ice instead of along the board. I will give you credit for your research on the FA list.

Defense Upgrade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>J_Sand3rs</b></div><div>Stars don't need a defensive upgrade...they were 7th in team defense this season. Signing Carlson makes absolutely no sense for Dallas. By constantly bringing in veteran defensemen, guys like Honka & Heatherington are going to get pushed out of the lineup. Both of these guys have solid NHL potential. We leave Honka as the #7, he's going to go the way of guys like Oleksiak and Nemeth. Both of those guys have had solid years on their new teams AFTER THEY GOT PLAYING TIME. Stars would be so much better off spending money on a 2nd line scorer. Stone would be great, but there are better options on the FA market that aren't going to cost us a good depth guy and our 1st round pick.</div></div>
While just signing Carlson makes no sense, it would work better if Methot was also traded. Carlson would then take his (Methot's) place and it would still leave two spots open (since Hamhuis and Pateryn were not resigned in this scenario) for guys like Honka, Heatherington, Johns, Heiskanen (if you want him in the NHL). That being said I agree that a Defensive upgrade is not needed and a second scoring forward would be better. Think JVR, E.Kane, Neal, Vanek. Stone is nice but like mentioned earlier, there are other good FA options. For the Khudobin signing, looks good to me; personally I like Hutchinson better but Khudobin would be a perfect signing if you think Bow will move up within the next yr or so. Lines are okay, contracts need a few minor tweaks (Janmark 4+yrs, 4+M, Johns 3+yrs 2.5-3M), but overall not bad.

Blockbuster with MTL (1/2)
The trade isn't terrible, but I wouldn't propose this if I was the Dallas Stars GM. 1. You have JVR, E. Kane, Neal, Vanek (just to name a few) who are also 30+ goal scorers and wouldn't cost you a future Selke candidate or a good, young, puck moving top 4 LHD. 2. The Hanzal contract isn't terrible either, and I would rather put a higher priority on trading/losing the Spezza contract. 3. Dallas has a lot of good young Defensive prospects who need to play/attempt to play big league hockey (Heatherington, Honka, Johns, Heiskanen to name a few). Adding more D to the mix is not necessary.
As for your FA signing, Bernier is an interesting choice. One that I am okay with (I like Hutchinson a bit more but still I like it). Janmark and Johns are a little undervalued in their deals. Janmark = 4+ years @ 4.5+M and Johns = 3+ years @ 2.5-3M. The other signings I can live with although I don't know much about Cole to say anything on that. It is another D added on top of the two in the trade so...

Where do the Stars go from here
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>lavsim96</b></div><div>Would you agree about Faksa being possibly a future Selke candidate?
And why do you not want Vigneault?</div></div>
I would agree with Faksa being a future Selke candidate. He had an amazing year, with a +21 against opposing teams #1 lines.
As for Vigneault, I'll give credit where credit is due. He is 11th in all time wins (648) as an NHL coach in 1216 games. The issues I have with Vigneault is that 1. he has shown (and very recently on NYR) that he does not play the young guys as much as they deserved to be played for that I don't believe he knows how to grow young players into good vets. I don't. Example Pavel Buchnevich Dallas needs that. The Dallas Stars have a lot of promising young talent who at this point in time just need regular minutes in the NHL in order to get better. 2. Over-usage of the vets. Don't get me wrong, vets are experienced, they know what they are doing and superstar vets can decide the game in a hurry. But I don't want to see Spezza (should he not get traded or bought out) playing 20+ mins cuz of his experience and see guys like Smith, Faksa, Dickinson, etc. get 10- mins in return. 3. He never took the blame or the fall for anything. Now saying player X or forwards/defence need to wake up is one thing, but to always be blaming someone and at the end of the year say the coaching staff was the best thing? Not a fan of that. Blaming Lundqvist was not a smart move. Just my two cents.

If I was GM of Dallas in V2...
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>J_Sand3rs</b></div><div>You do realize that you have too many players on the roster, and the cap won't jump as high as $82M next season....right?
That in mind, I'm gonna try to break this down piece by piece, so hang with me.
1) Khudobin is fine. I'm perfectly fine with Dallas signing him to be their backup. Brossoit makes no sense though. He's already struggling a lot with Edmonton's farm system. In addition to that, the Stars have a young guy in Bow that could be ready to taste backup duty in a couple of years, and then after him you've got guys like Jake Oettinger and Colton Point that will be knocking on the door of the NHL. I just don't see where Brossoit would fit into our goalie system.
2) Val Nichuchkin is coming back next season, so you'd need to add him to your lineup. That's another $2M+ to add to a team that's already over what the realistic salary cap will be next season.
3) The Stars already have a log jam at defense, and you're adding 4 defensemen to the lineup. Drop all 4 defensemen, and these are the 7 that the Stars SHOULD (and likely will) run out there next season:
Lindell-Klingberg
Heiskanen-Honka
Methot-Johns
Heatherington
That's 7 defensemen, and 7 defensemen that are going to play pretty damn well together.
4) You've got the same issue with the offense. The Stars have a ton of young talent waiting for NHL spots to open up. With Hanzal likely sidelined for the beginning of next season, and Roussel likely not to be brought back, it opens up a couple of slots for guys like Smith, Elie, Dickinson, Hintz, and Gurianov to get full-time spots in the NHL. All of those guys have been great prospects for the Stars. Loading up their roster with depth veterans makes no sense when there are young guys in our farm system that all the potential to be far better than any of those veterans. Oh, and there are only 4 lines of offense...not 5.
5) There's no need to trade off parts of our future (Elie, Dickinson, 1st round pick) for Kreider when there are guys like James Van riemsdyk on the Free Agent market that can be brought in without mortgaging our future.
6) Spezza is not going to waive his NTC for Montreal. And wherever he waives his NTC for, the Stars are still going to have to eat half of his salary just to get rid of him.
7) No need for the Stars to give up a pick for a guys just to play on the PK. Elie, Smith, Benn, or Seguin would all be better options on the PK than McGinn.
8) A lot of your RFA signing are miscalculated. For example, Janmark is going to get at least $3.75M over the next 4+ years.
There are a lot of unnecessary moves here that would make no sense for the Stars. Not to mention the fact that your roster is way too big, as is the total salary of all of these players.</div></div>
What this guy said. Plus u listed in the beginning that Cap Space was a need (in which I don't 100% agree with but was willing to see) and you went and signed 12 players.... and acknowledged that Dallas as (already) a ton of depth. Of the trades, I'm not a fan of any of them. While I would love to have Kreider on this team for the very reason that u listed in the trade, that is still a LOT to give up when the FA has some good options waiting. The other two trades don't make a ton of sense to me but give u a 10/10 for creativity and the attempt. With the lines themselves, this I like. Tho some guys should not be there, with what you created I am okay with the line arrangement.

Where do the Stars go from here
After reading the conversation between J_Sand3rs and lavsim96, I think everything was covered as far as roster goes. OEL would be nice but Cap crunch and Hintz being a good prospect would have me saying no; the Faksa and Johns for Kase would also be a no as that it two quality guys leaving and even if u did a 1-for-1 trade I won't do either of them cuz of the roles they have now and moving forward. Unlike my friend J_Sand3rs I would like to move on from Kari and sign someone else who is maybe younger if possible. And while Roussel is a fan favourite, a lot of good prospects (Dickinson, Smith, Gurianov, Elie, Hintz, etc.) could fill his role effectively. Heiskanen I would rather see in the minors for 1 yr and then come up after some experience in North America but that could just be me.
As far as coaches I think my top 5 would be (in no order) Willie Desjardins, Sheldon Keefe, Barry Trotz (if fired), Bill Peters (if he wavies his contract which he can do this offseason), and maybe Dan Bylsma. No to Sutter and Vigneault

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>J_Sand3rs</b></div><div>Tavares would be nice, no doubt, but it really hurts us when it comes to having to re-sign Seguin. He has one more year on his deal and is going to require a Tavares-like contract. Having both of those contracts and Jamie Benn's really hurts the Stars salary cap going forward.
And the Anders Lindback experiment has already come to Dallas....it failed miserably.</div></div>
<a href="/users/jacobzentner" target="_blank">@jacobzentner</a>. I agree with what was said by my friend. Tavares would be a dream to have on this team, but (assuming that Seguin signs for 10.5M) that would be $37.25M between four forwards (T, Seguin, Benn and Rad). Now I personally don't think it will hurt our chances of signing Seguin cuz ppl have to remember that technically Seguin's 5.75M also comes off the books with Spezza's 7.5M making $13.25M available next yr to sign whoever; I also don't for see Seguin getting $13.25M (tho he is worth darn close to that). However, it would hurt the overall Cap moving forward. Overall I like the lines; for a guy who isn't a Stars fan u did a great job there. Just change Anders Lindback for someone else, and switch Janmark and Gurianov. Otherwise two thumbs up!

Dallas Stars 2018-2019
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>J_Sand3rs</b></div><div>Heiskanen should probably start in the AHL next season, just to get used to North American ice. I agree with 95% of this. I'm one of the few that think Janmark deserves that much money. May be pricy up front, but he'll likely be a $5M+ player by years 4 & 5 of that deal. Only thing I would do differently is that I'd give Gemel Smith the same contract as Heatherington, and I'd put him on the 4th line and do my best to trade Ritchie. Other than that, this is spot on. Shore's contract may be slightly overpriced, but I'm just glad I finally found a scenario on this website that doesn't make me question the intelligence of Stars fans.</div></div>
My exact thought for Heiskanen. Let him play a year in AHL, get use to the flow of play in North America and then when we get an opening from Methot's contract he slides in. TBH I forgot about Gemel Smith even though I thought throughout the season that he did a great job. He would be cheaper than Ritchie and did just as well as Ritchie did this year (Smith 11 pts in 46 GP vs. Ritchie 14 pts in 71 GP). Rithcie would also be fairly easy to move since he is young, and plays the game fairly hard (hits, goes to the net, etc.). The Shore contract I'm okay with IMO because he put up similar numbers as Faksa , and Lindell and they are sitting at $2.2M. Plus I only gave him 2 yrs so (if for some weird reason) cap becomes tight, his contract will be gone and guys like Smith, Hintz, Dickinson, etc. can move into that C position. Glad to hear that you enjoy my scenario and thanks for the comment!
