Not sure why people or voting Florida here. Montour is terrible and the Sabres win by even getting a 3rd out of him.

PJ left us to go work with his dad in Florida. Initially what you posted was true, but when that article came out, Bill Zito was still an ASGM in CBJ.
After Bill Zito got the GM position in Florida, Fenton came with him.
I'll try looking for the article that mentions it.

I don’t think that factors in at all. MIN knows they aren’t contenders and holding on to a guy that could bring back something for the next couple years is far more important. Additionally, we’ve got plenty of 3rd line Cs. Losing one should t impact things that much.

Yes, the west is weak, but outside of Kaprizov, Fiala, and arguably Greenway we haven't had many bright spots offensively up front. Our blue line is fantastic and Talbot has been really good for us but I envision a lot of scoring issues until we get a 1C and Zucc hopefully proves last year was a fluke.</div></div>
If Guerin is smart he'll unload his rentals including Bonino at the deadline regardless of whether or not they're close to the playoffs. Even if they squeeze in as the wild card they're certainly not going to come out of a divisional bracket featuring 3 of the 7 highest ranked cup favourites (Avs, Blues, Vegas), so they're better off just writing the season off and ensuring that they do the rebuild properly.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caerii</b></div><div>The Wild aren't trying to replace Bonino with Jost or Bowers. He's a 3C playing in the 1C role. We actually have plenty of bottom six players. Again, maybe Guerin likes something about Jost, Bowers or Helleson that I don't, but the value of a 2nd round pick is you have dozens of guys to choose from, and you can get one you like, rather than whatever Colorado has sitting about.
How many of those guys would you take over a 2nd round pick right now?</div></div>
Bowers and Helleson have both developed really well since being drafted in the late 1st and 47th respectively. I wouldn't trade either of them for a 2nd right now.
Bowers is taking his time but he's taking strides and is looking good and will get his opportunities with this Avs team once there are injuries or roster spots opening up in the offseason. He's seen as the future 3C on this roster in a couple of years if not sooner.
Helleson has had an awesome improvement, and partnered Sanderson as USA's top shutdown pair in winning gold at the WJC. He's the perfect Erik Johnson replacement.
As for Jost, I'd rather have him than a 2nd rounder as more than 50% of the time a 2nd doesn't amount to much (especially with our drafting lol). He's still a cheap and versatile forward with good defensive play who doesn't hurt the team.
A 2nd round pick in general doesn't really do much for this roster right now. If you asked me if I'd rather have Bonino or Jost though that would be a different discussion, because Bonino would be a perfect fit in our biggest weakness.

Depends on how early/late the 2nd round pick is. If were comparing to an average mid 2nd rounder I would take Jost, Bowers, and Helleson over the pick, but I guess it depends on your teams situation (win now vs win later) and which positions youre looking for. Also depends on whos available in the draft tbh. I dont know enough about the 2021 class to know how deep it is outside of the 1st round so its hard to compare values

Agreed. I think value wise that package would be fair but of course it depends on which players Guerin likes. If he doesnt want to wait for a 2023 2nd (which is completely understandable) and doesnt like any of the Avs prospects then the deal is dead in the water. A 1st is not going to be involved

Guerin doesn't care, not for this year anyway. His eyes are firmly affixed to reshaping the team into a contender after the expansion draft.

Sure, but as stated above, it depends on how Guerin feels about those players. How many of them would you take over a 2nd round pick right now?</div></div>
The benefit of receiving young players/prospects instead of picks is that you've had the opportunity to see them in their D+1 or D+2 or later years, thus reducing the risk of the asset/player/pick busting. Guerin will likely also want for the rebuild to be quick, and waiting 3-4 years to see if a prospect turns out might not be as appealing as getting an NHL ready prospect who can jump into the lineup to replace Bonino.

Indeed. There are many ways to find value that matches a 2nd rounder that don't involve a 1st.

But why

Bonino would not play top-six in Colorado even though he does in Minnesota. And he is on an expiring contract.</div></div>
What Bonino does between now and the deadline will have little influence on his value - unless of course he gets injured or plays incredibly poorly.
Whoever acquires him at the deadline won't do so based on how he does as a 1C for a bad team. Rather, they're going to acquire him based on his track record in the playoffs with Pittsburgh and Nashville. As long as he can stay reasonably healthy his value won't change much. With 50% retention some gullible GM might cough up a late 1st, but his value is probably around a 2nd or 2nd+ depending on how late the 2nd is. Ranta + 4th or something like that is the sort of return that could work.

He's a bottom six guy, but he's one of the best defensive forwards in the NHL. Solid deal.
He's also a huge identity guy for the Wild.
