Ahhh yes, the Cap Friendly classic. Choose a player in a trade and when someone says its too much **** talk that said player. There is a reason people on here keep wanting Cole, and it is not cause he's a bad player/prospect.

You guys are all in this season and this season only. He isn't trading anyone and then you'll have an exodus next summer. Similar to CBJ in 2018-2019. Also that's way too much from CBJ for Lindholm

Its looking more and more like hes a TDL or next offseason move. The guy completely ignores that bad money is coming back with Boqvist whos a 3rd pair at best replacement level defender. Hayes is a forward, with more term and had no money come back in the deal. It's illogical nonsense from these homers to compare Petry to Hayes here.</div></div>
Apologies for not seeing the year but you don't have to be an absolute **** about it. Petry will not get anything close to the return posted here unless Boqvist has another injury filled season. If he again plays 50+ games and does well on the PP2 unit there is no way he gets moved for a player similar to Petry.
Cap is and will still be a struggle next off season. Petry gets paid too much and unless you retain 50% the return he will get is a 3rd rounder max. If you retain 50% at next seasons (2024-2025) deadline when some teams may have cap space due to LTIR and a need for a 3RD you may be able to get more for him but your value of him is currently too high.
Boqvist is not an "at best replacement defender" LMFAO

This trade retains only 1mil not the full 50%. MAYBE at 50% retained he gets a return but even at 50% its not getting the return offered in this ACGM.
The amount of times I have seen people say "This player has value at whatever retention" and then the return is 0 with that retention this summer has been often. Taylor Hall got NOTHING, Hayes (Flyers fans were saying him at 50% retained should get them a 2nd at the least) Hayes returned a 6th LMAO. Petry will not yield any return.

This retention puts him at 3,687,500 for 2 (TWO) years. Have you seen players being traded this summer with cap hits like this for any return? Ryan Johansen got nothing in return when going to Colorado at 50% retained at 4mil for 2 years remaining, Taylor Hall practically got moved for nothing when being traded to Chicago with 6 mil AAV for 2 more years, and Kevin Hayes got 0 return when being traded to St. Louis with 3.5mil AAV left for 3 years. The answer is absolutely not that Petry get any much of a return if he is traded again. Petry also doesn't want to be in Canada you have 0 leverage in a situation like this.

Stop lol, there is a reason we see Boqvist to the Habs in like 5 ACGM posts a day. He isn't a C level prospect/player, he is a future top 4 Dman PP specialist at his ceiling and at his floor he is a 5-6 Dman and PP specialist.

We cant afford 2 years of that full contract. With bonuses from the young players this year we would be over the cap and it would carry over to next season and we would be screwed with resigning Marchenko, KJ, Cole, Chinny, Tex. CBJ would be screwed if they did this trade and any trade that doesn't involve retention on Kuzy's contract.

Washington Retool
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Logicalicesports</b></div><div>I agree he has value as a prospect, I think Roslovic gets somewhat close to Kuznetsov in a one for one, maybe would need a draft pick to make it happen. But once retained the value goes up for Kuznetsov and thats why I added Sillinger. He had an awful season and it doesn't make sense to try and have him bounce back on the fourth line. With that said they get draft capital in a second, third, and fourth spread across the next couple of years and they get some salary retained.</div></div>
Yeah, I just don't know if Jarmo wants draft capital anymore... Feel like he'd rather keep Cole (fits our timeline better than any future draft picks) and trade Jack + 2nd rounder. BUT I also can see the Capitals also not wanting draft capital til Ovi is gone, they also are in win now mode. Maybe Jack + Robinson/Foudy + 3rd rounder for a retained Kuzy? There is definitely a trade that can be worked out that both teams feel good about. Also the news that Backstrom is back to 100%, or close to it, makes Kuzy more expendable.
Edit: I like the Kuzy fit on CBJ a ton tho, we have a ton of young Russians that he can hopefully mentor (Marchenko, Chinny, Tarasov, Voronkov)

I don't want to say Cole is off limits overall, but I do think he'd be off limits in a Kuzy trade... Just not a good enough center to give up one of our really good center "prospects". I do like the fit however, def think a trade is possible but hard to judge value IMO

I think Foudy is going to be sent to the AHL to start the season. Players are less likely to be claimed if sent down when every other team is trying to trim their own rosters, and once they pass through waivers once they can be sent down without waivers if they get called up for less than 30 days. Similar to what we did with Bemstrom last season.

I hope Jarmo doesn't make the same mistake in sending a great Russian prospect coming over to the AHL to start the season for too long (16 games in Marchenko's case). Voronkov can make a day 1 impact based off what we saw from him last year in the KHL. Voronkov in the AHL should be 10 games max even if we don't get injuries. If Robinson or Olivier start slow kick them to the curb and bring up someone who will compete. We have great depth right now, any players not giving it their all can be scratched very easily.

I haven't read any reports but I don't see why they wouldn't trade (with protection) their next 2 1st in a EK65 trade (a 2nd first cause the amount of salary dumps going back will be extreme).

I mean, we have KJ, who was vocal about being a center when we drafted him, and Laine, who pushed to play that role last year, both can be that 2C perhaps. Cole, to me at least, can be a great 3C on a cup contending team, he puts in the effort on the ice and, like we saw in his rookie season, can pot goals at a decent rate and can defend well and be on the PK unit.
I still think Jarmo is trying to get a better C via the trade market but if he can't he could push Babcock to try and get Laine or KJ as the 2C IMO and if it doesn't work then Boone would play that role.

I see him signing somewhere else, either a massive city or somewhere south in the US, if he's not traded before then.</div></div>
Yeah, I think Laine goes to FA or we trade him before his UFA contract year to a team that he would resign with. I think that would be a NYC or NJ team IMO. Easier travel for him to visit home or for family/friends to come see him. I do LOVE Laine tho and hope he kills it under his current deal and we can get him long term, I just know that as a smaller city that is very difficult for the team to do.

I think the price on nylander is really high. And I don’t think we are in the position to make a trade for him.
signing him for free (I don’t think he gets there for the record) at that price would be acceptable my issue is more the cost of acquiring him (via trade) then signing him.
The only concern I would have would be blocking potential long term extensions for Johnson and marchenko who I really want to lock up long term as I see both as breakout studs coming up. It’s our turn to have a Hughes mackinnion type contract.</div></div>
Yeah, I can def see KJ doing a bridge and Marchenko maybe doing a Svechnikov like contract with us. Would be ideal and I think we could fit it in following seasons with Nylander (even tho I highly doubt we get him by trade or FA). Still I think things are looking up for CBJ and Jarmo is trying to align this team to compete while Fantilli is on his ELC.

I actually think we can pay those 3 that money... since we have a 1C on a ELC cap hit. Laine expires right when we would have to back up the truck for Fantilli so he would be a "Cap Casualty" in 3 years. Until then we can pay those 3 top line wingers that much. Maybe I'm wrong tho, its just how I see it right now. Make a team that can compete over Fantilli's ELC contract then have guys expire once his contract comes up for a pay raise. Gudbranson's contract also comes up the same time as when Fantilli's expires (If Gudbranson doesn't get bought out before then) so we will have almost 13 mil in cap space from expiring contracts (add in what ever the cap ceiling raise is that year as well) when Fantilli's is up so we can resign him and do a retool if need be.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>leafs101</b></div><div>meh, Toronto's issue is overhyped, truly just got f*cked over by the COVID flat cap, otherwise would've been totally fine.
And look, I agree with you - personally I wouldn't do it as the Jackets but just looking at how they've been dealing it wouldn't surprise me if they made a big move for Willy should he become available.
You guys didn't need those players, you had the stopgaps internally - Severson at 8 years can't possibly be considered just a "stopgap". You had Peeke, Gudbranson, Boqvist, Jiricek down the right side. For a team that should be focusing on development and rebuilding that's more than enough of a stopgap (Gudbranson signing was also baffling but that was a year ago, anyways...). And Provorov - you don't pay that much in assets for simply a "stopgap" - if you wanted that you could find that in free agency, just overpay some steady LD on a 2-3 year deal and give up no assets.
I agree totally with you in terms of the direction this team SHOULD be taking from a management perspective, but to me it just seems like Jarmo is very willing to sacrifice some future for some current players.
And hey - with such a stacked prospect pool to deal from and still keep a lot of, maybe he's right you turn out like the Devils, but I don't love the signings/moves. Love the young talent, but not the way the GM has been approaching it.</div></div>
Agree a ton on this. Any team that gave out long term high AAV contracts from 2017-2020 got overly screwed by Covid and all the hate those GMs get for being in cap crunches is asinine. Those GMs did great jobs with what was known at the time. Toronto should have had 5+ mil to do moves each of the last few summers but were given pretty much nothing.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>leafs101</b></div><div>Matthews isn't going anywhere. Nylander maybe, but doesn't necessarily have to. What people don't fully grasp about Toronto is because we have so many guys on short term deals we have all the cap flexibility we need to keep everyone. Will we, is a different question. Nylander's NTC is only 10 teams, meaning there are 22 teams available to trade to, and I'd have to imagine a significant portion would be calling on Nylander. Even just as a rental that return is arguably just ok at best, it would cost more than that for Nylander.
And before the DeBrincat deal gets brought up, its all about leverage - OTT had utterly none because he basically would only sign long term in Detroit. If Nylander's really going money hunting for the 9.5-10M range, he can't/won't be particularly picky about where he ends up. Different situations.</div></div>
Fair enough. I tend to not offer enough when doing these. Definitely think we would have to give up more, maybe not that much more, but more!
