The Boston first rounder needs to be included in the Columbus trade. There's no way they will take on a $6.25 million M-NTC Matt Murray for anything less than a first rounder. He has tremendously negative value and will be impossible to move.

It's actually just been a running joke with the Jackets fans on this site. It's kind of snowballed since every TDL ACGM for the last 2 years (mostly made by Toronto fans) were trying to package their garbage-time forwards and cap dumps + a 4th rounder for him. The counter offer has become something like "No thanks, how about Matthews extended $2.5x8 for Jake Bean and a third?"

While this draft is super top heavy, it is not deep. Florida's third rounder won't be worth anything; it's essentially an early fourth in disguise. Add your own third and it may be palatable as there may be second round talent there, but the Jackets are more interested in moving players than trading down in picks. They need to make room on the wings more than they need to make a third pick in the third round.

What would it take to get number 3 or number 4 in the draft
For the Jackets to fall back another 2 spots it better blow the minds of the owner and fans or else Jarmo gets canned before he walks up to the podium to make his pick. Recent news is Michkov may be stuck until 2028 now as a recent report said the Sochi owners are planning to blackmail him into staying. Which isn't surprising based on what happened to his dad.

The thing is Jenner is untouchable. Columbus can't let their current captain who is about to start his tenth year with the club go for anything short of an incredible overpay. He's been pretty open to the public about how he doesn't want to play anywhere else and ultimately I think it's the main reason he currently wears the C. The city loves him. Optically, any trade involving Jenner that doesn't bring in a true franchise player would be seen as a fireable offense for any GM from a city desperate to have players embrace it.

I doubt the return for Hayes won't be as substantial as a first rounder. I think Philly will be getting Foudy and/or Bemstrom with a mid round pick. Jackets need to move wingers before moving high picks.

TBL offseason wish list
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CaseyFlyman</b></div><div>An upgrade, yes, but obviously significant enough for the FO to pay for him? Voronkov, Kuraly, and Foudy have the inside track for bottom-6 centers I'd think...but Colton has great underlying numbers and decent production. I'd make the trade, but even with Bemstrom moving out, I don't know if the FO sees enough value compared to what's already here or in the system.</div></div>
Voronkov is starting in the AHL and Foudy is probably part of the package to Philly for Kevin Hayes. Torts likes Foudy and I consider him as good as gone. If anything, Colton is a good winger as well and can play on a Tex-Sillinger/Jenner-Colton line where all three are above average faceoff guys and excel at puck control. I expect more wingers to be moved as well.
With the refs tossing guys out of the faceoff dot for as little as smelling funny, every team pretty much needs 2 centers per line.

Realistic off-season
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dopplsan</b></div><div>I think CBJ pass. Kuzy's contract feels kind of risky, and with a Smithlesson/ Sillinger T6 in the next 1-2 years, he just feels gratuitous.
Not to mention, no chance in hell he waives that NTC to go to CBJ.</div></div>
It feels risky, but with only two years left it would fit the timeline quite well while allowing Sillinger and whoever gets picked at 3rd overall time to be sheltered with 2nd or 3rd line ice time.
He may accept Columbus, now. There is a decent Russian presence in that locker room. Let him talk to Marchenko, Chinakhov, and Voronkov about it. Marchenko is quite convincing.
I will say, I don't know if I would rather have Hayes or Kuznetsov, but both playing interchangeably at 1C/2C could be really fun to watch.

TBL offseason wish list
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TMLBRIAN</b></div><div>I assume Columbus accepts that.
Jeannot is already 25. I think any contract he signs pushes him into UFA. So there is no such thing as a bridge for him. (I could be wrong). Maybe 5 years, 2m a year?</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dopplsan</b></div><div>He's definitely an upgrade to our B6. The question is whether we have roster space, even after moving Bems out.</div></div>
I would think it's quite acceptable. Ross Colton posted a 56.1% faceoff percentage this year. While he only took 189 faceoffs, it's quite good and gives whoever the HC may be to let him play next to Texier on the third line and rotate Center duties.
Now there is a better B6 Center I would rather get, but Nico Sturm is constantly in a state of "he was really good, he's not available" and "I'll offer him for a 4th rounder" ACGM posts.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dopplsan</b></div><div>I think that works for CBJ.</div></div>

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Bluejackets2000</b></div><div>Really? The difference between Bemsie and Grzelcyk is the #34 pick in the 2023 draft?</div></div>
It's not that he's better, he just fits a real need. Grzelcyk fits the current need for a LD2 with low term remaining until Mateychuk/Svozil/Knazko is developed to take the spot. Bemstrom is more of a luxury logjam winger.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dopplsan</b></div><div>Bemstrom is a non-factor for CBJ. Great AHL guy who hasn't elevated himself above a depth piece. Was put on waivers 2-3 times this season and cleared. Of course, the ol' "change of scenery" could get something out of him, but at this point he is what he is for CBJ.
And yeah, I think it's reasonable to say 34 is too high. I'd like to target Griz, though.</div></div>
Calgary's third rounder/the CBJ fourth and Bemstrom would be okay to me. I want that second to target Michael Hrabal.

Jackets should take a chance on Gambrell. Seems like a guy who may need a change of scenery, but would play well in the rotation of bottom 6 centers. I wish his FO% was a bit better, but good coaching could turn that around. I would take this deal and run.

Jackets need LD on a 2-3 year deal or Centers. While I don't mind Myers, there's no room for him on the right side, especially with Jiricek being ready for the big boy ice, without moving 2 RD's out.

From the last reports on it, Jackets have Kevin Hayes coming in from Philly on a done deal. Plus it's highly likely Leo Carlsson is their pick and he probably makes the third line this year. Roslovic is prime trade bait this year.

CBJ have some decisions to make
Miller's contract is horrendous and I have no problem leaving Vancouver to hold that thing. I guarantee Vancouver won't accept doing retainage either.
Hayes will cost less than that. For that return they could take a lot more in retainage. What I have gathered so far, Philly would be down for Foudy, Bemstrom, and the late 3rd rounder for Hayes retained down to $5 million. Big selling point is that these are Torts' guys.
Ian Cole is a decent stop gap on the left side for a year, but dropping Bean as well will require another LHD to be signed. Svozil is probably not ready. If a deal can be made with a potential UFA, I would try to trade for signing rights of a guy like Ryan Graves before the Defenseman bidding war starts. If not, move depth players for a rental LHD to clear some of the logjam.
You may have made depth at Center, but taking $14+ million in bad contracts with movement clauses hurts. The highest paid of which underperforms as a center. Leo Carlsson should be there at 3rd overall and can play 2nd or 3rd line center right away on an ELC. There are other centers available at a much more reasonable cost.

I came here to talk about the Hayes trade, so I will do that first. But that Severson contract hate is completely undeserved.
I think The Jackets would prefer to not move the 2nd rounder (especially if they think a top G prospect is still on the board there; Hrabel please) and would to prefer to move forwards. I would at least make sure the players were the guys Torts liked when he was there. I think Foudy, Bemstrom, and a 2023 third would be my counter proposal for Hayes retained down to $5 million AAV.
For the Severson deal: It's not good, but it is probably realistic. All defensemen walking into Free Agency are going to catch big money in a bidding war this year and I think Severson can take real advantage of the real shortage on the RHD market. You may have given him an overpay of something like $500,000, but that may be what it takes to get a good RHD to go to a team who isn't quite ready to compete. To be honest, I think NJ will choose to keep him over Graves because finding a capable replacement is going to be more difficult. Any GM who doesn't expect second pairing guys to get overpaid is going to leave the Free Agency period without one.

As long as Columbus makes the M-NTC list for Forbort, he would fill a huge need (an okay stopgap for a year to get Mateychuk ready) for the Jackets at a decent cost.

I would only consider moving the first if Nico Sturm was included. In my opinion, he's one of the most underrated centers in the league. He has a great FO% and defensively he has been great his entire career. Even then, I would have a hard time taking on Ferraro since there's plenty of guys in the Jackets pipeline with "great potential" and what is really needed is 2 or 3 years of #2 LHD while the prospects continue stewing. Sturm would still be my real target in a trade like that.

Center options Whats the cost
The Hayes deal with Philly is almost an inevitability at this point, so there's a Top 6 Center they already have in place with somewhere around $5,000,000 in cap space. If the Jackets take Adam Fantilli or Leo Carlsson, there's a #2 who will become the 1C some day.
Backlund has a M-NTC and probably won't waive it for Columbus. That said, he's going to be a hard fit into the Top 6 where he should be. The price is probably this year's 2nd rounder and a sweetener.
Granlund is getting ready for a buy out, so the price would be whatever his asking price is in FA. If you don't want to get into a bidding war in FA, tell them you'll do it for Future Considerations. I wouldn't want to take him on for $5.4 million, though.
Logan Couture is worth a lot to San Jose so getting him out of there would be tough. They'll ask for the King's 1st + Jiricek + another prospect.
