I mean you just won a Stanley cup without him, if I were a Bolts fan I wouldn’t want him traded for sentimental reasons but it could make a lot of sense depending on what exactly the return is, especially if you want to keep all three of your big RFA’s

If we do resign him, we have a year to move Demko before the expansion draft. If Van cant resign Tanev then we can't take on murphy's contract either. Lots of D in free agency too. Don't need to trade for Murphy. He's not a top 4 guy on a good team.</div></div>
See if I was Jim Benning I’d keep Toffoli and Tanev and let Markstrom walk, Jim Benning however is an entirely different person who according to Friedman has resigning Markstrom as his no. 1 priority. If Murphy doesn’t work the value still does and it can either become a 3 way trade with someone like TOR who needs a RHD desperately or another piece is moved.
And once again this year or next you’ll get a similar return on Demko. Maybe you’d get another 3rd if you waited but why not let DiPietro get NHL minutes if he’s finally ready (which Benning has thought he is for two years considering he inexplicably gets lit up from time to time when he gets put in an NHL game).

Hence the extra asset you’re receiving. I think the only way Bergevin doesn’t do this is if he’s trying to offer sheet Sergachev and doesn’t want to compete with the hawks.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>eVANder</b></div><div>Vancouver declines. We'd rather keep Tanev then trade for Murphy and Demko is not going anywhere right now.</div></div>
I partly agree that Demko won’t go anywhere rn but he’ll be moved at some point if Markstrom is resigned and so whether it’s now or in a year he’ll get moved and that’s likely the return. If he’s moved next year (cause his contracts up and you’ll be needing every dollar you can get for Petterson and Hughes) the hawks stick with crow for a year and then bring in Demko to be the starter rather than the backup for a year.
tl;dr - Demkos traded eventually with a similar return
If you can’t keep Tanev cause he asks for money you don’t have then Murphy should look pretty enticing, especially if the hawks can retain salary.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ledge_And_Dairy</b></div><div>Don't see Bobby Ryan coming to Calgary, apparently he wants to play in Philly but I think he would have no issue taking a league min deal in Tampa over a 2.4M deal in Calgary. Remember he is still being paid from the buyout. Same thing with Maroon, if he's taking another sub 1M contract it is likely to reup with Tampa.
DeMelo is not needed if you are signing Barrie, one of Kylington, Valimaki, or Stone would just play that right side. With that extra cap space I would hope it is spent on someone like Markstrom.
I'm not against signing Barrie but at the same time I'm not entirely for it either.</div></div>
I guess I kind of overlooked that Bobby Ryan rumor but if there’s any way that he’d play in Calgary I think he’d be a perfect way to add skill to the bottom 6 to balance out Lucic and potentially help Bennett’s regular season production.
I’m with you that Maroon probably makes around 1.25-1.5 this off-season because he will have suitors but maybe he just wants to say **** you to Edmonton and/or sees the Flames as a good fit/situation, but otherwise there should be other depth options, whether internal or UFA.
My reasoning behind DeMelo was that in the defensive zone he should outplay his contract and if Barrie is the big FA signing then you need to make sure that there’s solid defensive options in the lineup for PK and defensive zone draws, and DeMelo would be cheaper than Brodie or Hamonic, while also being an anchor for Valimaki or Hanifin.
I can see where your coming from with wanting to go after a better goalie but I’m one of the people who believes that goalies aren’t as important as skaters and you can win with a 1b type goalie. An option to upgrade without losing much cap space would be trading for someone like Kuemper (either move out Rittich for a cheaper backup or get a third team to retain salary) or Korpisalo if they’re moved, and both of those specific teams have said they want to recoup picks which would make a trade easier for a flames team that needs to keep as many pieces as possible on the current roster.

I agree with you that the only way we'd see a Seabrook to Ottawa trade irl is if Zaitsev or Ryan comes back so take that as you will. Saad was traded with retained salary so that you could flip him at 1.5M for a better package than the hawks would've given you.

I know that you wouldn't trade him for the sake of trading him but that isn't what this is or necessarily what Jarmo will do. I've seen multiple reports and articles saying that Korpi may be traded bc the Jackets org. is higher on Elvis and you guys have three good goalie prospects. If he along with Josh Anderson and others are moved it looks like it's either for scoring help or to recoup picks/prospects you've lost from last years deadline.

I think that possibility is enough for a team to take a chance on the futures and a bad contract that they potentially don't have to worry about in a year, The bad thing about it is that the earliest that his contract could come permanently off the cap from LTIR would be during next season and the hawks would be able to eat the salary, but wouldn't be able to make the signings prior to him going on LTIR. It's really just wishful thinking on my part.

From a Hawks fan POV Saad is going to walk in a year, Nylander I've seen enough of especially come playoff time, and this team is built to be good enough next year to be giving up the roughly 20th OA pick
From a Sens fan POV Seabs third or fourth year they'll likely need the cap space to resign their young guys coming off ELC's not to mention that Melnyk is extremely cheap.

I don't disagree with you that they shouldn't move them and in that case, the hawks just find another suitor
