I mean at this point, presuming Ellis is done, there isn't a good 1st pair to be had. Provorov has shown he can really do it without the perfect partner, and TDA and Risto are both very flawed, probably number 3 or 4 on a good team. Might as well lean into it

offseason time to build around superstar Eichel
That Hart offer sheet at least interesting... Dunno what the Flyers would do tbh. The compensation doesn't seem great pick wise but then paying a guy who's had a massive down year that much, causing us a cap headache, would be a big problem.

I mean it has been done before, but finding a team to buy out a player on you behalf isn't that easy I guess? There's probably only a limited number of players it's useful for in a given season (I.e. a player in the last year of their deal on a high cap but lower salary, therefore probably towards the end of their career, who is still good enough that you'll want to re-sign them, and who actually has to accept the situation in the first place).

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MGabes19</b></div><div>G has an NMC, why would he sign on for this?</div></div>
He ends up with more money. He'll get paid $5m next season in the last year of his current deal. With the buyout money and a new $4m contract he'd actually get over $6m next season and over $5m for the second year. Plus it helps the team cap wise, meaning they'd be more competitive. It's what The Caps did with Orpik a few seasons back. Traded him to The Avs who bought him out, re-signed with The Caps at about $1m.

As flyersarephilly said Ottowa are buying him out in my scenario. That said The Flames bought out the final year of Michael Stone and then re-signed him a month later at a lower total cap hit. Turns out it was only players bought out with the compliance buyouts in 2013 and 2014 that you couldn't be re-signed until a year had passed.

Left Field Move to Free up Cap Space
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mikearky</b></div><div>Nice idea but no.
1st Orpik deal was for 5.5 million not over 8 million
2nd Orpik was single year cap hit, this cap hit would be over two years.
4rd Wings have several prospects in the system.
4th Ginning is not even top prospect.
5th Avs got a ready to plug and play goalie, nothing in this deal makes Wings better, any time soon.</div></div>
The cap hit is largely irrelevant. Orpik was owed $4.5m Giroux is owed $5m. For a team not spending to the cap its just a way to swap some real money ($3.66m buyout cost over two years) for some picks / prospects. The Avs gave up a second to get Grubauer in the deal, I'm not sure these values are that far off with the Wings not giving up anything.

Is it? That could well be the case, I'm not hot on all the rules. I know you can't reacquire a player you buyout for a year. That's why they traded Orpik. Rule could have come on after though.

No thanks from the Flyers. Doesn't achieve anything for us except tie up more cap for longer. Forward isn't the position we need to reinforce.

We're at 50 contracts aren't we? I think the Flyers likely target picks for Laughton, can't see us wanting any forwards back with the prospect pool we have. Could maybe see a deal around Liljegren though depending on value.

This seems like the ideal outcome, but I think that every year with various players, and how often does it actually work out that way? I just think when players get traded away they get a taste of a different organization, start hearing what offers might be about, and most decide to try something new.

Not sure what Petan adds in the Laughton deal. Probably swap him out for a 3rd (or a 4th seeing as you don't really have one) and I think you're close. There's going to be a few teams interested in Laughton (only Hall and Rakell have more points on TSN's Trade Bait List, and they have both played more games and have bigger cap hits) so I don't think it's going to be a total bargain-basement price on him.

Flyers don't need another centre. Or really even a winger. We also certainly don't need to take on more long term cap that doesn't involve adding a top pair D.
Laughton will be moved for picks, not cap dumps in positions we're already deep in.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sensonfire</b></div><div>Flyers accept.

The Flyers don't accept. We have no interest in Kerfoot. We have Couturier, Hayes, Patrick, Frost, and Laczynski in our around the NHL roster at centre, plus Giroux is back playing there and quietly having a strong year. If we move Laughton it'll be for a haul on our terms, not giving up more picks and cap space than we get in return (plus a nothing prospect).
Toronto aren't going to be the only team interested in Laughton, someone will pay straight up picks. I'd strongly suspect we'll get a late 1st with conditions or a 2nd and 3rd especially if we retain salary.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Laughton can get us more than a 3rd and a 6th (plus a contract dump). He's a good middle 6 forward both sides of the puck and over a 40 point pace over a regular season.

That works too. It's just about offsetting the cap hits a little, not about the player we get back in return.

New lines at TDL
There's no way the Flyers would give up on Sanheim for that sort of package I'm afraid. As a big piece in a big deal perhaps (Ellis or Ekholm for example) but not for a deal that doesn't improve us or move out significant cap, just adds more bodies. We have wingers galore in the AHL/minors, so we don't need to bring in any more and Kulak is a net loss vs Sanheim. The picks don't add any real value to us either.

I agree. There would need to be more work done in the summer (free up some cap by moving JVR or Voracek then use Frost as a trade piece for another top 4 D). The there's the likes of York, Attard, Andrae, who could fill a role sooner or later.
Couts and Eichel as the two top 6 centres would be a top 3 combo in the league (Mathews - Tavares, McDavid - Draisaitl (though I think they play together a lot?), Don't think Crosby - Malkin is what it used to be, etc. Hayes just gives you that extra depth plus I think he can play RW too?

Sanheim will only be 25 by the end for this season, so it's 2 more after this before he can walk as a UFA If the Sabres can't start locking up players after their first non-ELC contract that wipes out a lot of value to be found around the league. Patrick is just 'a player with upside' in this deal. The main bits are Konecny, Sanheim and the first. I think it's a pretty strong offer?

Honestly, I don't hate it but I can't see Frost playing 4th line. AV, unfortunately, hadn't shown much interest in icing a skilled 4th line. On Defense I think that we could get by with that but it'd need an upgrade at deadline day. Braun just didn't play enough minutes (or provide any offense) at 5v5 to pair with Provorov full time but I guess Ghost could pick up shifts with him too.

I'm not so sure. The guys we've seen moved like that (namely Staal) are literal cap dumps. JVR was on pace for 50 points last season in a bad year. I also have LA retaining salary on him. So a 50 point, goal scoring, power forward type for a $5m cap hit doesn't seem like an awful trade to me. Maybe taking the 3rd round pick was overkill. But again, JVR isn't a washed up bum. We just have a ton of left sided wingers and he doesn't fit into AV's system so well.

Seems like the cap will be flat for a while though so the 1 year deal doesn't help in that aspect. Someone will almost certainly offer him a 7 year deal in the $8m (at least) range. So taking the 1 year deal at $9m really isn't the sensible move.

I mean it's a lot to pull off that only really happens if Pietrangelo has any interest in signing here. I do think Laughton should be shopped a little though (he's the sort of cheap but good guy teams want in their middle 6 where we have plenty) and I expect Ghost to go.
The biggest downside here is you can't protect all the good young players in the expansion with Pietrangelo on the books.
