Similarly, happy to see Joshua and Blueger back over Henrique. But nervous about term for Blueger.
17M for Z, Toffoli, Henrique, Lafferty
Or
17M for Lindholm, Myers, Joshua, Cole, Blueger</div></div>
If I had to choose between those two options I take option B.
The organization clearly targeted Blueger last offseason, identifying him as a professional that can come in and play his role as a defensive specialist the way Tocchet wants him to. He also chose VAN over other destinations. Given how good he's been I think that he ends up staying, which is good because I think he'd be a bigger loss than some people realize.
Joshua is the one I'm fine with letting walk. Podkolzin can take his spot.

offseason
Even if it is at a discounted cap hit that Lindholm contract is a big risk.
I'm not sure if Toffoli for Mikheyev makes us better to be honest.
I think re-signing Blueger is one of the most important things for us to do this offseason and I don't see why others are letting him go.

That Hronek deal looks solid. I was fully expecting Pettersson to get 12.5M for 8 years so getting him at 11.6M is definitely a win. If management could get Pettersson down then I don't see why they couldn't do the same for Hronek. If we do get him on a good deal I'd expect 6.85M long term, exactly 1M under Hughes. If Hronek wins as much money as possible I'd see 7.5M+ long term. Your estimate there is very reasonable I'd say.
Friedman said that Zadorov likely prices himself out of VAN, but I hope that doesn't happen. I think he's been awesome. The physical edge he brings is invaluable and he's fit our system very well on top of being a Foote type of player. Hopefully him talking about how awesome it is in VAN after the trade means he'll be willing to stay. I'd be fine with 4M for 4 years since the rumour is that he wants term.
I don't mind bringing back Myers as its apparent that the coaches and players like him, but if we prioritize Zadorov over him (which we should in my opinion) it might be necessary to keep more flexibility for elsewhere.
I don't think Lafferty is worth that contract, I'd rather find a cheaper replacement.
That leaves the outside UFAs you brought in. Toffoli has looked good in WPG so far but my concern with him on this team is that our top-6 does not have much speed. Henrique is a useful player but I don't see what specific need he fills on this team. I think that 9M would help us more if we retained DeSmith (~2.5M) and Blueger (~2.5M) and got Tanev (~3M) to improve the defense. That leaves a small bit of cap for a forward, maybe keeping Joshua if its a reasonable contract.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SmoothMcCrimmonal</b></div><div>As far as who plays on D is concerned, Hanifin-Pietrangelo and McNabb-Theodore are locked in as the top 2 pairs and I could see any of Martinez, Hague, Whitecloud, and Hutton utilized for the third pair.
Forward lines are a mess after the first line. Stephenson probably draws second line with whoever they want between him and Hertl playing center. Third line being Mantha-Karlsson-Amadio and fourth being Carrier-Roy-Kolesar. This all of course assumes full health</div></div>
Assuming full health Stone takes that last spot at 2RW. I think its interesting that Mantha would be in over Howden or Roy given that those other guys are more suited to the bottom 6, have established chemistry and Mantha's history as an inconsistent player. I've been a big Dorofeyev fan from his draft days but I don't see how Cassidy plays a 23 year old over the other guys.
The amount of players this team has is ludicrous.

Would Martinez be in over Hague?
Stephenson on the 4th line? Roy and Howden scratched and Dorofeyev in?

Buffalo are only couple pieces away from being a threat
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CuyahogaKid</b></div><div>Honestly, I think Granato is a good coach, but I think the issue is the assistants and the roster. There are too many friends of the coach and GM on the staff and as result, there’s a lack of experience behind the bench.
The team rallied back into the playoff race behind their coach, they certainly haven’t quit on him, and I think he’s done what he can we what he was given. The star players on this team that are well paid have just not been executing, it’s a down year for several guys from a shooting standpoint, and now although we added to the D and solidified it, we now are in dire need of a third line center,
But the bigger issue is the GM. Granato has to coach the team that he was given, and the biggest mistake of the offseason was Adams doing to little to nothing to add to they roster when it needed help, especially when Jack Quinn went down.
Not to mention, the owner won’t do it. The biggest problem of all is the owner.
If they fire Don Granato, they’ll end up with Seth Appert as coach. Thats the Terry Pegula way, because he doesn’t want to pay multiple coaches to not coach.</div></div>
Maybe I'm thinking too simplistically but Tocchet has been the single most important factor in the Canucks finally putting it together this year. Simply flipping our blown leads from last year into wins is what catapulted us up the standings. That was accomplished by bringing in a sound structure and effectively communicating it to EVERYONE on the team.
I wouldn't pretend the know the Sabres as well as their fans, but from the outside there seems to be a complete lack of structure, trust and consistency on defense. I think that can be attributed to having a young team and coaching. I don't get the impression that Granato is the guy to bring that element as a coach. Of course getting more veterans, defensive players and toughness would help too (like the Canucks bringing in Blueger, Suter, Cole, Soucy, etc). Of course the goaltending voodoo applies to Buffalo as well at least until recently.

An interesting 24-24
Podkolzin hasn't been incredible overall but he's been solid since being called up. He's a Tocchet type player who can play physical along the boards and win battles. He praised Podkolzin in the media the other day talking about how much better his defensive reads have gotten. Given that he's a cheap, young, cost-controlled player I don't see any reason to move him unless its for an equivalent young C or RHD.
The chance to move Smith to VAN was last week.

I forgot to switch Tanev when I insert Sharangovich. But honestly a more defensive player to be pair with Theodore is not a bad thing</div></div>
Hronek would be worth it, he's been a step up from every defenseman besides Hughes and would be a better partner for him. Could drop Sturm for Carpenter for cap space. Bouchard is an incredible offensive weapon but I don't think he'd be very valuable behind Hughes on the PP. Could switch him for Roy.
Lot's of options but bringing in Hronek would be a must.

The lack of size contributes to Hughes' lack of physical play, not his necessarily defensive game. I don't think Hughes' utilizes his unique skillset consistently on defense. But again, he's 22 and the youngest player here. I'm confident it'll be different once he's 27.
