<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ledge_And_Dairy</b></div><div>I listen to other peoples opinions, but i strongly disagree with this one. I've been very clear on here that I want Calgary to acquire Eichel but you dont do that by trading your current 1C, your current top top pair RD and a bunch of futures.
If you think this team is better with Eichel and Gudbranson in the top 4 than Monahan and Andersson then fine but you dont fill in holes by making a bigger one somewhere else</div></div>
Just my opinion but our hole at the forward position is a long festering giant gash. sure losing andersson sucks and does create a weaker defensive line but if you dont like gudbranson as second pairing then mix one of mackey or kylington into the bottom pair and make gudbrason the 7th d-man. my point is the flames and sutter apparently have put their money on gudbranson being atleast serviceable otherwise why would they sign him for close to 2 million. he wont be riding the bench all season you can almost guarantee that.
Andersson is our current top pair defenseman but he sure didnt play like that last season

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sensibleguy</b></div><div>If Buffalo is willing to take those three Ottawa assets, Ottawa has a better prospect pool to pull from to finish the deal and they can acquire Eichel.</div></div>
again that's not how three team trades work. if ottawa was willing to throw their prospect pool at buffalo for the services of Eichel a trade likely would have been completed already. Ottawa is still in rebuild. destroying their prospect pool to acquire Eichel would not be setting the team up for success.
Also obviously this is a situation where ottawa isnt willing or interested in putting up atleast 2 more 1st round picks or equivalent to get eichel

You need anything else from Ottawa to acquire Eichel? 😂</div></div>
Ottawa is acquiring Monahan. If you disagree with the evaluation on the value for Monahan that's fine. What Calgary does with the assets they receive from Ottawa is none of Ottawa's business. as the title reads I'm trying to make some sense of the reason Calgary currently has 9 defensemen under contract to start the season. the way I'm doing that is positing that Anderson (Calgary's most valuable piece on defense) is what Buffalo is asking for. In order to make the money work Monahan needs to be shipped out. Ottawa is weak at the centre position. Monahan fills that role

ive seen this before an i still don't understand the insinuation that Morgan Reilly gets you Johnny Gaudreau+.
Gaudreau is the best player in this trade. Kerfoot as you mentioned is a cap dump. If Toronto wants to add gaudreau it will be them adding picks not Calgary.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Campabee</b></div><div>It also leaves us with 0 1st round picks in a very very deep draft, one in which we host. Also Gallagher has as much value as Monahan so that would be a 1 for 1 and Evans and Poehling are good enough to fill the 3 and 4 holes anyway so Dvorak would be a moot point.
Edit** Also we are adding 10 Mil in cap to avoid paying KK 6 mil or trading for Eichel. Makes perfect sense.</div></div>
Both Monahan and Dvorak are better than 3rd line forwards. Monahan is borderline 1st line so no you are not filling the same holes/roles with evans or poehling. also Gallagher is not comparable to Monahan. in roughly the same amount of games played over their careers Monahan has 439 points Gallagher has 357. and before you bring up monahans last 2 seasons he was injured for the majority of those seasons.
youare adding 10 mil in cap for 2 players instead of 1. sure you could go for eichel but that's not the point of AGM. in this scenario Eichel isn't going to Montreal
Like is said this would be an all in for the cup move. those types of moves typically involve trading away draft picks.

the thing is they are both somewhat wrong.
Chabotrrorr clearly doesnt watch the flames play. Monahan has declined in temrs of points but he has improved defenisvely and he has played through som pretty tough injuries the past two seasons. a healthy monahan is worth a lot more than the offer above. one big thing is i dont think flames are trading monahan for futures if he gets traded it will be for roster players who can help the team now.
Cjets is kinda right in that the above trade doesn't meet what the flames are looking for and wouldn't make sense for the flames in their current position with no replacements at any position coming back but there is certainly some interest from the flames in trading monahan and a package like the above would be a start but remove some of the prospects and picks and send over a roster player.
Now i could see the flames doing this trade if it was part of a three-way to get Eichel but that would require buffalos input on whether or not they value some of the prospects included in the trade above.

the dvorak trade is a little heavy on the assets from Montreal but this makes your team very deep and talented. this is the type of team that wins cups. this would definitely be an all in for the cup move

fair enough but in no realistic trade will buffalo retain anything on eichel. they wont pay eichel to play against them for the next 5 years. 2.5 million is also a substantial amount in todays cap. you can get very serviceable 3rd liner for that price.

probably cause of the 10 million dollar price range and term on eichels contract. Vegas is already in cap hell. also the idea behind any three way trade proposed is that the third team is interested in a piece from the team getting eichel that would help facilitate the trade. Vegas isnt trading for Eichel they are trading for Monahan. what the flames do with the assets they acquire for Monahan has nothing to do with Vegas

Eichel Who
fair enough. bit of an overpay for Dvorak seems to be the consensus. I was just basing that on the rumor that Arizona is looking for an A prospect and a 1st for him.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Alfie11</b></div><div>Backlund’s best at 3C in a shutdown role at this point, he provides incredibly consistent offense, but unfortunately it’s consistently 15-20 goals, ~45 points, which isn’t great for a 2C. So if we trade Monahan, we need another centre (either Eichel or Dvorak). I know Dvorak hasn’t even hit those numbers but he still has upside so that’s what would be betting on (as well as supplementing our depth with DeBrusk and our future with a 1st from Boston). So yeah not a huge fan of these trades (ideal version of this with the players involved for me would be 1st+Studnicka+DeBrusk for Monahan and Dvorak for two 2nds) but in theory it’s not terrible I guess. These lines seem pretty good if they want to shake up the room by trading Monahan in a non-Eichel package (especially if we get Studnicka for the 4C, he has higher upside than Gawdin). We could realistically get 90-100 goals from the top line, probably 60-70 from the 2nd line, 50-60 from the 3rd line, and hopefully the 4th line (with Pitlick not Lewis) can contribute like 25. This is assuming a pretty average season from everyone, no real breakouts. With Sutter bringing a lockdown defense we could be reasonably competitive.</div></div>

Flames get a significantly older player on a worse contract who only slightly out produces Monahan. flames wouldn't even do this if it were one for one not to mention adding a prospect and picks

no....... the cost to keep all of tkachuk, gaudreau and mangiapane and add eichel is a 1st rounder + lucic + the trade above.
i also never said i would agree to the trade that the OP proposed as i think that it is already an overpay for eichel. i was just solving your question of where we would get the money to re-sign some of our top free agents next season.
Flames will have to sacrifice in some areas in order to get Eichel but Eichel is a generational player would could in theory make this team a contender. Treliving has spent his entire tenure in calgary being very safe and hoarding draft picks. if the flames organization wants to compete they are going to have to take some risk on big ticket player who will improve the roster. if it fails then great move on a rebuild. if it succeeds we could be competitive for the nest 3-4 seasons. this wasting away in mediocrity thats been going on for 17 years needs to end at some point. and im sorry but coleman is not the answer that is gonna push this team into contender status. Eichel could be that guy

some rumors pitt is interested in looch. even if we have to retain a million to get a deal done there thats some significant savings. if that doesn't happen then give up a high draft pick to a bottom dweller to take his contract for the final season. backlund is another guy who could be traded to make room. paying your third best centre 5.35 million is unsustainable.
again all hinges on us getting eichel. also hinged on the idea that tkachuk and gaudreau want to stay in Calgary which they very possibly may not

either player would be fine. I believe Rakell certainly would be cheaper because he only has one more year on his contract beyond this season. I also think Rakell is the better player and would slot into our top 6 easier.
The length of contract on arvidson makes him desirable but it also makes him expensive.
The real issue here is if Treliving isnt able to swing one fo these deals before the deadline then i will consider this a failed year and i think treliving should certainly be out the door. flames need to win this season or next and if they dont accomplish that then it rebuild time
