(VGK/TOR) - Clarkson & 4th round pick for Sparks
This makes zero sense, i know Toronto had a lot of money but paying LTIR on his contract is worth at least a second, and Sparks too ... worst move for Dubas yet ... and I like Dubas.

Carolina Hurricanes signed Sebastian Aho (5 Years / $8,460,250 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pharrow</b></div><div>This was a horrible offer sheet from the Habs. The main concern for the Habs was the length. They wanted longer than 5 years. They will match the money no problem and the deal is done.
This contract will have no effect on Marner or Point. Neither one care what Aho got. His negotiation is not theirs.
LOL I think you are mad because you worry marner will be next. This is the way the system is suppose to work. Besides the NHL loves drama. What a great way to create bad blood.</div></div>
Oh man, i wish they would offer this to Marner, it's a steal.

Vegas Golden Knights signed William Karlsson (8 Years / $5,900,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MelonVK</b></div><div>Yeah but what I'm saying is if you're implementing a system to make it more fair, then you should recognize other factors and not go "yeah but the cap is there to solve *this* problem". And also no, 50 million over 5 years with 25 in the first year is more than 60 over 5 years with 15 in the first year. That extra early money get's ROI over the rest of the contract, which the money on the back end doesn't</div></div>
Ideally this is true, but there is risk involved with this as well. If there is no risk they are making a minimal return or would need to lock it in.
The question is do you want 50M with the potential to earn 60M or more, or would you prefer 60M guarenteed, and without tax on the gains you could've made on 50M.
It should just be even across the board so that there isn't a need for tax havens, front loading, etc.

Vegas Golden Knights signed William Karlsson (8 Years / $5,900,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MelonVK</b></div><div>Here's the thing though, teams like Toronto can frontload contracts. Take NYR and Florida as alternatives for signing Panarin: While Florida has the lower tax, NYR can easily cough up 30-35m during the first 12 months of that deal which Florida can't. Money today is worth more than money two-three-and-four years from now because of inflation and pure investment. The small teams experiencing high taxes and relatively less wealthy owners are the ones in real trouble. Toronto is probably as attractive a FA spot as Vegas, it's Ottawa and Winnipeg that are really struggling</div></div>
If you are going to have a salary cap, the raw numbers should come out equal after tax. Yes, other cities have other advatages which players take into consideration, but none so much as take home $ after tax. This is the only thing a salary cap is supposed to make fair.
And while i get the sentiment that teams like Ottawa and Winnipeg get hurt the most, a cap in general hurts large market teams more, if there wasn't one while the leafs have been willing to spend you don't think McDavid wouldn't be in the blue and white, and likely Stamkos, Tavares, etc.
So if they are giving this opportunity up for parity in the league at the very least it should be applied fairly.

This is a huge problem with the system, i think more people are realizing it, there should be a balanced tax.
There are a few options to achieve this. But great signing for LV.

(TOR/CAR) - Marleau, 2020 conditional 1st round pick, 2020 7th round pick for 2020 6th round pick
Not sure how people are blaming Dubas for this one, everyone knew this was coming up when Lou signed the contract in the first place.
If they didn't sign Tavares and with the team progressing faster than expected resulting in larger contracts this wouldn't have been this big of an issue.
Kudos to Carolina for leveraging there position, knowing if this was the best price available it had done.

Good trade for Leivo ... always liked him but never seemed to catch a break. I hope he gets a real opportunity in Vancouver.

Toronto Maple Leafs signed William Nylander (6 Years / $6,962,366 AAV)
It was always going to take this long to sign Nylander simply because of the rule that allows you to get more of the cap hit in the first year of the contract.
As the Leafs do not have cap room to use next year and its Matthews and Marner as opposed to Nylander I don't seeing it be so drawn out.
Now the Marleau deal I never liked but hope there is some agreement behind the scenes that he can be traded next season and that it was structured in this way so he could get his money with a reasonable cap hit.
Now lets talk about finding a way so that Tampa can't artifically get extra cap because of the tax situation.

Leafs 2019
They would have to take Marleau ... he would only be making $1.25 that year ... the trade would have to be made after the signing bonus is paid out.
I'm sure Florida would have a team cap and if Toronto can cover some bonus money before moving guys it could be very enticing ... i'm beginning to think Gardiner is more likely in this scenario.
