ZEGRAS TRADE AT 6TH OVERALL PICK

PLD Redux
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Blazingbat11</b></div><div>The PLD ship has sailed (hopefully). Him having "effort issues" has really solidified itself as a real thing. Almost everyone gave him the benefit of the doubt in CBJ, a few still gave him the benefit of the doubt in WIN, now almost no one is giving him the benefit of the doubt in LA...
Habs should steer clear from PLD... Would be nice to shed Anderson's contract (would rather shed Gallagher's in this case), but as someone else mentioned above, it comes down to the difference in actual dollars. PLD will have over $50mil in salary left to be paid off, whereas Anderson (or Gallagher) would have less than $20mil... adding the effort issues from PLD, it's clearly not worth the risk, let alone having to add a prospect of Beck's caliber AND a 1st rd pick.... hard pass</div></div>
Thanks for the thoughtful rejection. Appreciate that it's a discussion at least.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Blazingbat11</b></div><div>If PHI offer Laughton for Lundell (not 1 for 1), I don't see MTL offering more. Philly would win that bidding war. Closest roster forward with value Habs would realistically throw in a Lundell deal is Evans, who has similar production to Lundell this season.</div></div>
I know they have been valuing Laughton 1st +, so don't know how much they would be willing to add for that. For me it seems good base for a trade for both. Flyers need center with more offensive upside while Panthers could use Laughton style player in their 3rd line. Laughton also has reasonable 3M cap hit for two years still so wouldn't hurt Panthers much. I also think Torts would like player like Lundell, he's responsible both ways.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Blazingbat11</b></div><div>Curious... what would your offer be for Lundell from PHI's perspective? I did write that depending on the market, Habs could go as high as adding WIN's 2024 1st rd pick and maybe even more. In another thread, another Habs fans suggested Evans being thrown into the deal, which makes sense with FLA being in "win now" mode. and Evans and Lundell's production this season are similar.
PHI and MTL definitely have a crap ton of assets to spend that could bump up the cost in a bidding war, that's for sure.</div></div>

Made this largely thinking about this thread, obviously adding Knight muddies the waters a bit here but this is around what I'd be willing to do for him

There's just no fit at all for Harris in Philly. Funny enough, if the Flyers wanted to make a big splash this summer I could see Lundell being a guy they really make an effort to acquire (and based on where Philly is at and how big their needs currently are, I could see them paying a lot more than Barron+ to get him)

Liljegren will be 25 this spring, quite frankly there's not all that much runway for us to be patient with him with, and he's on the outs with Leafs fans for a reason

Leafs go for it
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Blazingbat11</b></div><div>Liljegren will be 25 soon and hasn't been able to solidify his spot on a weak top 6 defensive squad for years now. He has consistent brain farts in his own zone, and has floated between being a healthy scratch and a 3rd pair dman when everyone is healthy or not suspended (in Reilly's case). I have zero interest in him wasting space on the Habs blue line taking away time from Barron, Mailloux and Reinbacher as soon as his season is done in Switzerland.
Robertson is 22, could help give Laval offense for their playoff push, or he could actually fit on the Habs wing once Pearson is gone, and could have a chance at helping the Habs PP2 unit (who desperately needs someone better than Ylonen, Gallagher, Anderson, etc... Only good pieces on PP2 is Roy and Xhekaj). In terms of potential, Robertson at least has "untapped potential" left in him, whereas Liljegren you pretty much know what you're getting.
So yeah, between the two it's really a no brainer. Roberston over Liljegren all day.</div></div>
Robertson is not far off from a full career in the AHL. the fact you think pearson leaving is gonna open a door for Robertson makes little since. A small forward whose biggest attribute when he was drafted was his offense is not going to thrive on a forechecking fourth line and there's going to be no place for him in the top 9. I will concede that he may have a little more value left him in than Lilegren but the reality is neither are pieces montreal's going to want back.

I don’t think he does unless a contender makes a desperation play close to the TDL… but I also don’t think Hughes deals him unless a first or equivalent value is offered. So if I had to place a wager I’d bet that Savard finishes the year as a Hab.

Habs fans constantly trade Jordan Harris away in their ACGMs because they have an abundance of LhDs, so I don't know how excited they would be at the prospect of adding Girard to Matheson, Guhle, Struble and Xhekaj (plus Harris), and then there's Lane Hutson.

experiment
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Blazingbat11</b></div><div>Crosby and Mackinnon had cups to back up their salary by the time they extended. Ovechkin in hindsight was able to get the job done afterwards, but at least he had a history of consistently getting past the 1st rd of the playoffs. Matthews has proven nothing for playoff success and has a specific playoff series under his belt that put his "effort" into question... *cough* his 1 goal performance against MTL *cough*...
But from a value perspective, MTL would be fools to turn down this deal. I like Slafs potential (imo he can still become a point per game (40g 40a) power winger), but that's nowhere near as close to the generational talent of Matthews. The Leafs playoff struggles aren't all on his shoulders, so any team imo would jump at the opportunity to add him. MTL included.</div></div>
Crosby yes but this was in response to taking less which he didnt really taking in the context of the cap.
Ovechkin signed his deal which was almost 19% if the cap before he had even played a single playoff game then he didnt get past the 2nd round until his 13th season which then he won the cup.
Mackinnon didnt get past the 2nd round until his 9th season which then they went on to win the cup. in the grand scheme of things is there really that big of a difference between round 1 and 2? people looked at both ovie and nate as "guys that cant get past the 2nd round of the playoffs" more than "guys that always go to the 2nd round of playoffs" before they went to the cup final in 22 mackinnon had been to the 2nd round 3 out of his 8 seasons with 3 of those years missing the playoffs.
The playoffs success has not been there for Matthews and he struggled in the MTL series but I wouldn't credit that to lack of effort. he had a bum wrist which he got surgery on later that summer and the Danault line did a very good job of shutting him down. I do feel his playoff reputation is overshadowed by the teams lack of success as 2017, 2019 2020 22 and 23 round 1 he was great. 18 and 21 and 23 round 2 were not good but i honestly think Florida round 2 was the worst series for him

Next years top 6
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Blazingbat11</b></div><div>Not to mention his wife is still very vocal on social media on how she'd like to return to MTL. Of all the veteran upcoming UFAs, Toffoli might be the most realistic to sign with MTL. Him and Monahan if he doesn't do well in WIN.
From the other perspective, not sure how much appetite Hughes will have bringing in top 6 forwards that'll take away from the youth coming up (Beck, Mesar, Roy, etc.). My guess is he'll go after those guys only if he can move out players like Armia, Anderson, and/or even Gallagher (highly unlikely).</div></div>
Re his wife, I was not aware of that. I think he'd be such a great fit as a veteran, he's a good two way player too. Imagine if they traded Anderson instead when he had value and kept Toffoli years ago.

Well obviously the Francophone factor is there but believe it or not, I think the idea of "getting a good player whose playing bad, for cheap but then plays well for us" is the driving force on why he's being brought up by many Habs fans. His season thus far should be the reason why Habs fans DONT want him, even for cheap.

I got to be honest, I kinda don't even want PLD anymore. Guy is still a solid player obviously but the aura around him is, for me, officially tainted now. I gave him the benefit of the doubt that it was simply the environment he's been in throughout his career but at this point, shame on anyone who brings this guy in now. He's clearly as much at fault as the environment he's been on all these years.
