(CGY/MTL) - Monahan, conditional 2025 1st for future considerations
Okay, so it sounds like the conditions can basically be summed up like this:
If CGY 2024 1st is 20th <em>or lower</em>, then MTL has the option to take that pick. If not, or MTL doesn't take that pick, then MTL will get the earliest non-top 10 pick of whatever 1st rounders are in CGY's possession across 2025 and 2026.
I think.
Maybe.
God please don't make me wrong.

(CAR/SJS) - Lorentz, Mäkiniemi and conditional 2023 3rd rd pick for Burns, Pederson
I think this was one of the rare trades that one team won and the other lost, but that both teams can feel good about. My Canes didn't give up too much for a great offensive righty and got SJ to retain some of that ghastly contract he signed, but SJ clears cap space and gets a great young guy in Stevie and a Mak seems like a decent goalie prospect.

Mainly that LTIR isn't in use in the offseason and that even when Gardiner is on the roster we have cap room to re-sign Necas and maybe Bear too.

Friend of mine is a Habs fan. At first, I said that <em>I</em> was going to have so much fun taunting him over this. And then I realized. Why should I leave him out of that fun? <em>We</em> can have fun taunting Vegas!

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Zuki9797</b></div><div>assuming 30M with 2 elcs?
slavin is too expensive for a small cap team like that... he alone takes up 17.67% of the cap (like someone making nearly 15M with an 81.5M cap). replace him and kahkonen for campbell and fox. frees up 3.45M in cap
then you can replace vanecek for another cheap goalie considering campbell can do fairly well alone, like stolarz. adds ~250K in cap but its fine
then theres room to add another ELC, so get rid of lorentz and add zegras
Milano - Zegras - Terry :0
Barabanov - Barbashev - Hartman
Bunting - Heinen - Pulju (hope that one of them can play C, because i believe that none of them should be on the fourth line below nicolas roy)
Lorentz - Lundestrom - Evans
Bean - Fox
Whitecloud - Deangelo
Stanley - Hakanpaa
Campbell
Stolarz</div></div>
The challenge was 30M, 23 players, *no* ELCs. Lorentz and Vancek are both off theirs.
Although going with Campbell would have been absolutely the right way to go.

Well, Jordo has ~16-17 minutes per night. I think KK's limited time is a result of the power play/penalty kill ratio. I mean, the Hurricanes have taken about 180 penalties and have gotten around 120 power plays, so given that Jordo is the PK guy and KK spends almost no time on the PK, but is on the PP2 unit, I think Jordo and KK get about equal treatment when it comes to usage.
I will agree wholeheartedly that KK *deserves* more play time though, his play when the Hurricanes had all those guys out due to COVID was awesome and he was our 2C for that stretch.

Coyotes get two players who in no way help their rebuild and a bunch of late round crap picks. Ghost isn't moving this year but if the Coyotes did decide to move him they could easily get a late 1st and plus prospect give him play and that his contract is only 1 more year. Try again</div></div>
Given Arizona's obsession with draft picks, I figured that throwing random picks at them would be more valuable than prospects, but I see your point.

Yeah, I really like Ghost, but I'm not exactly totally sure about his value. I know he used to be really highly regarded and then he was very not, so I don't know how to gauge him.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Campabee</b></div><div>The one thing I keep seeing over and over that I hate is KK on the 4th line. He is producing at a 40 point pace on that 4th line at least move him up the lineup like he deserves or trade him somewhere else so that he can play higher up (even I it is not the Habs). The kid has talent and has tried to prove it with both teams he has been with but for whatever reason the coaches won't move him up when he has success.</div></div>
The only problem with moving him up in the lineup is that he doesn't play wing nearly as well as he does center and with the center depth the Canes have, you kind of can't move him up at center. I think Rod is basically running with the idea of having two third lines, with KK being the offense and running with defensive players and Jordo being the defense and running with offensive players. There's a reason that Jordo is on the PK and KK is on the PP.
I do agree, KK has played phenomenally and deserves more time, but he kind of can't get that here. Given how much the Canes like him and how much he seems to like the Canes, I don't think he's going anywhere either.

No.
The Canes actually like KK, so he's staying put. Jarvis is a big part of this team's future, he's staying put. Raanta is the only guy I can see actually getting moved, but not like this.
No, no, no, and more no for this one.

I could see that McCann deal happening even if that seems like a bit too much to pay for him, but the Lyon Forsberg swap is...what? Alex Lyon already showed that he can hang in the NHL and we've seen Forsberg before and he wasn't great. Why would you make that trade?

Carolina Hurricanes signed Jesperi Kotkaniemi (1 Year / $6,100,035 AAV)
There isn't really a way that Carolina will lose really badly from this.
If Montreal matches and aw shucks we don't keep him, well now biceps-for-brains has to deal with his qualifying offer stuff. Kotkaniemi could sign an extension, but if he wants money (which he does) he'll wait until the offseason and force the Habs' hand.
If Montreal doesn't match well then the Hurricanes have Jesperi Kotkaniemi. Unlike Montreal there's no attachment to him, so trading him or letting him get offer sheeted is perfectly fine. In the meantime, he'll be a perfectly fine forward option (probably not more than that, but you never know). I could see Carolina calling up a desperate team at the deadline and saying, "Hey, we've got this forward and we'll be willing to retain half his salary if you give us some candy." Said candy might not be a full recuperation of the picks they gave up, but the picks they gave up are going to be in the back half of their prospective rounds, so it's not too bad.
Plus it's petty.

Canes fan here.
Two things about Riley Nash.
1) I think you're selling him a bit short here, he'd probably be worth like a 5th.
2) The Hurricanes would not be acquiring Riley Nash at the deadline unless they've got injuries to at least five forwards.

Canes Cast offs
Looking at this lineup, I actually think that this team isn't half bad. The obvious weaknesses being the right wing and goaltending, but with that insane blue line, this team would be interesting. It probably wouldn't make the playoffs but I don't think it would be flirting with the draft lottery either.
