The Leafs Need To Shake Up The Core
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>PleaseBanMeForMyOwnGood</b></div><div>I love how so many idiots on here keep saying the Leafs need to shake up their core because they can't win. Yeah lets just ignore that the two guys you are trading are 23 and under. The Leafs are still a super young team, they need adversity to grow and become winners. You and people like you treat these kids like they are all 30 year old vets who are going to be on the decline. They are not. You are being silly.</div></div>
look at this team though. They have looked disinterested, disgruntled and they're flat out terrible defensively and play with no consistency.
It can be argued they're already flaming out, they're on the fringe of a playoff spot now and the cap issues will get worse and worse each year.
How have teams like Calgary, Florida, Nashville, Philadelphia done by not changing their core? Now that two of them have they're looking much better, as for Calgary and Nashville they've got issues.
St. Louis was getting nowhere before they added O'Reilly or before guys like Parayko became major pieces.
The Penguins won Cups with defence and by surrounding their star centers with versatile players, of which most were very good defensively.
The Kings won with defence, goaltending and hard working defensive forwards. Kopitar Muzzin Doughty Brown Pearson etc are all defensive players who also excelled physically.
The Hawks won with great defence and two way forwards (Saad, Toews, Shaw, etc) as well as Patrick Kane.
The Capitals won because they played fantastic defensively. Ovi was a two way forward in the playoffs.
NONE of the Leafs' forwards outside of Zach Hyman fit the criteria for the type of support Matthews/Tavares need. One is not enough. The defence is super suspect, Jake Muzzin is the only one who can eat minutes and that's an issue. Ceci sucks, Rielly is soft and very weak defensively, same deal for Barrie. If you won Cups like that then I think San Jose would have three or four right now. They had Vlasic and Pavelski and that was about it for good defensive forwards.
You can't win when you have too many soft skill guys like Johnsson Kapanen Marner and Nylander on your wings and then Rielly and Barrie in the top 4. It just doesn't work. Caps don't win without defensive Ovi or guys like Wilson Kempny or Niskanen. Hawks don't win without guys like Saad Toews Keith Seabrook or Hjalamarsson. Pens had Crosby (who's defensive game is unmatched by anyone on the Leafs' roster and almost everyone in the league) but also without guys like Dumoulin Daley Rust or Kunitz.

I honestly think the Red Wings can be 30 points better next season (putting them at like 80 lol so still not good) with this lineup.
We need a new voice behind the bench, BUT...
- Larkin has been in a slump most of the season
- Fabbri has been a good fit
- Bertuzzi looks like a legitimate first line forward
- Mantha got hurt again lol
- DeKeyser was fantastic before getting shut down. They were 4-4-1 with him in the lineup and 11-42-3 (!!!) without him.
- Nemeth isn't THAT bad and should be alright on the second pair if he survives this season
- Zadina Hronek and Veleno look promising
- Bernier isn't THAT bad assuming he is alive by October
- we're still ass tho lol

he seems to be the type of player any team would want but I think there was some rumour of Columbus considering moving him related to a previous contract dispute which i think was last year.
I don't think Columbus moves him unless they enter a full rebuild which they really don't need to do since they have two star defencemen, a young team and a lot of cap space

Fiala and Dumba to the Canes Brodin and Staal to Fla
I really don't understand why the Wild should move any young pieces of their roster, especially Fiala who has started to look very good.
That being said I really do like the Borgstrom trade however I'm not sure Florida would be willing to cough that much up. I might lose the first round pick as Borgstrom is one of the league's top prospects.

Ranking which Teams have the Overall Worst and best Contracts
LOL the Islanders have more cap space than any other non-wild card team in the playoffs and have one of the lowest overall...but BAD?
Meanwhile Dallas (cap pressed) is ranked as one of the BEST?
How on Earth is Carolina not the second best after Florida?
Do you seriously think that Hjalmarsson, de Haan and Ekblad are bad contracts? I thought it was a joke

Ristolainen suggested by KUUUCH
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hedman77</b></div><div>I agree Ristolainen is underrated but adding Sergachev is a little excessive. Same with Nylander. Miller and Callahan obviously isn't enough for Ristolainen but I think Sergachev is bridging the gap too much</div></div>
I think Sergachev and Callahan straight up for Ristolainen would be fair. Buffalo may need to add in a piece like Sheary as well if Sergachev and Risatolainen aren't equal or very close in value. Callahan probably has zero value, as he provides so little on-ice value (though I've heard he's a great veteran presence/leader).

Actually rebuilding properly imo
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jonesryan</b></div><div>Not when Toronto isn't that desperate to move him with a good prospect. They can move him elsewhere and not give up Bracco and still make upgrades. Doesn't make sense to give up a good, young, skilled, cost effective forward to dump 1 contract. Bracco will be exactly what they need if they have to lose Kapanen or someone like that. Or when injuries happen. Toronto's cap issues are only next season, they won't mortgage that much of the future to get rid of Zaitsev</div></div>
Bracco isn't the cost of moving Zaitsev's contract. He's more the cost of Green and Glendening (value being increased because Detroit would retain 50% in my view of this)

true. He will (as does 95% of free agents) get too much. Though Calgary most likely won't pay that much for a third liner

No offense, but that NYR trade you have there would only ever be offered by Chiarelli or Dorion - i dont even think Marc Bergevin would do something that silly. Johnsson is ALREADY a top 6 forward and is young. Beleskey has negative value. Kassian also has pretty much none - paying Brown foer him and a third is not enough for the Leafs imo. Parayko for Nylander isn't bad but may need some tweaking. I do like the concept of this and the ideas you have here, though. Johnsson may need more $ too, and Kronwall will retire. I like the Marner/Kapanen contracts a lot - Marner get slocked up long term, and Kapanen gets a cheaper bridge deal.

I really like the concept of this, and I think it's quite reasonable. But I think only Peter Chiarelli would give Hayes that much $ - that's about 1.5-2 million too much if you ask me. Especially if he is going to be the 3C - that's an easy ticket to cap hell (although the moves you made here, combined with Calgary's cap situation prior to this does make "cap hell" quite a hyperbole. Most teams that would be the case).

Green could easily grab a 1st in the world of the modern NHL. Grouping that with adding a great shutdown forward and Detroit taking on an $4.5M/5 year contract for a mediocre (at best) defenceman, and the Leafs not losing a roster player of any value, I think that a good (not great) prospect is reasonable...

On a more serious note, I think that's too much for Varlamov - term as well as cap hit. I'd like to go with 2-4 years, 3-4 million per year, as he's not great and is on the wrong side of 30 (i think he's got a bit of an injury history as well - i might be way off on that one)
