Yes, but that's where the second bolded part of my quote comes into effect.
Let's say GM #1 owns Player Alpha. Player Alpha has a cap hit of $8M. GM #1 can trade Player Alpha to GM #2 and retain 50% of his contract, which reduces his cap to $4M. GM #2 can also trade Player Alpha to any other GM that is not GM #1, and has the option to retain 50% of his current cap hit (the $4M). In the end, Player Alpha can end up with a cap hit of $2M. No more retentions can be placed on this player after that.
All in all, you do have the option of retaining Ennis's contract one more time, to a maximum amount of 50% of his current cap hit. If you choose to trade and retain 50% of his current cap hit, you would be retaining $1.150M and his new cap hit would be the same amount.
