SPC Dump v2

Description
so the Maple Leafs probably have to dump some SPCs at some point. they're also over the cap.

- Marinčin for Petrovic is pretty close to a lateral move, but Babcock likes his left-rlght defensive pairings, and (assuming the Panthers do, too), this fills a need for both. The Panthers are short a left-shot on their roster (and bringing Ian McCoshen up wouldn't be a very good idea), and the Maple Leafs are short a right-shot. Valiev gets the 7th defensive spot in this scenario, which would presumably give more ice time to the likes of Rosén, Borgman, Nielsen, and Dermott on the Marlies. No, Valiev's not the best defender out there, but he just needs to be a warm body at this point.

- The Panthers are a tad short on wingers at the moment. I'm sure Lupul would love to be with an organization that isn't dubiously claiming that he's injured just so they can stay under the 23-person roster limit. Plus, his contract's sorta backloaded, and he only requires $3.75M in salary this year, great for a Panthers team that might have an internal budget. Leivo would actually get a chance to play, and Rychel would basically be Lawson Crouse-lite, which, I'm sure, Dale Tallon might be interested in (and the Maple Leafs don't have to worry about his waiver-eligible status now; that's someone else's problem).

- The 3rd. eh. It's like Marinčin for Petrovic, Lupul (and Rychel to grease the palms) and Leivo for a 3rd. I dunno. Trades are wacky sometimes.

And now the Maple Leafs have positive cap space and 45 SPCs instead of 48. Voila!

The Leafs are not over the cap when Horton and Lupul are on LTIR. But I like the idea of the trade to trade some multiple spare parts for one upgrade (Petrovic). Like the lineup except for Valiev. It's either Dermot or with the extra cap an veteran NHL Dman on a one year deal.

touché, but I'm sure Brandon Pridham doesn't like the idea of incurring bunches of bonus overages from LTIR like the Maple Leafs did this year. I'm not sure it's the greatest short-term solution. I put Horton on LTIR in this scenario, but after the trade, the Maple Leafs were sitting at ~$1.3M in positive cap space, which means there is a possible scenario where the Maple Leafs don't have to use LTIR and can summarily reduce performance bonus overages.

I don't like the idea of having Dermott sit around as a permanent 7th defender with the Maple Leafs; he needs ice time with the Marlies. maybe they could sign somebody like Éric Gélinas to a 1-year, league-minimum contract, but then that starts to defeat the purpose of having dumped a bunch of SPCs in the first place. it's possible that, because the Marlies are right there in town, there's no real need to carry 7 actual defenders on the roster, because call-ups are incredibly easy and require no travel time.
