You’ve got to realize by now Boston isn’t doing that. If one of their goaltenders is traded, it isn’t going to be for second round picks and Kevin Dahl. It’s going to be to get the assets needed to secure an Elias Lindholm or Noah Hanifan type, but most likely not at all.

The Dawson Mercer for Jeremy Swayman deal is probably the closest thing to a feasible possibility between the teams and I don’t think either side does it

Devils can’t address the goaltending till next year. No one is trading a starter or Edmonton already would have done something. Only thing we can do is find some sort of bandaid

As a guy who isn't a fan of either team, it's a fair enough deal, the condition on making the 2nd rounder a 1st in if the make the second round in 2yrs is weird it should be for this season.
Bahl is probably equal to or slightly more valueable than Forbort and cheaper
Vanecek at 3.4mil as a backup goalie + 2 2nd rounders + Clarke who probably is a 5th rounder in value for Ullmark is fair
This would also free up about 4mil in cap space and Boston could go out and get possibly 2 big pieces at the deadline and not just one

I should also say, I don't value goalies as highly as other people

Mercer is more valueable than Swayman + a 1st round pick, suggesting a 1 for 1 deal would be the closest thing possible for these 2 teams is wild

His play this year doesn’t suggest it and Swayman has displayed the potential of being the best goaltender in the league. Again, I don’t think either team does it. I can acknowledge why NJ and Boston say no to this deal.

Go ahead and continue to look in the clearance section for goalies. Sometimes you find some good deals in there. The current orange jumpsuit that looks like prison garb named Vanecek needs to be brought to goodwill and forgotten.

LOL I'm not a NJ fan if that second line was meant for me, also Vanecek is having a bad start doesn't make him Campbell

Mercer is more than points, top 6 forward who can play both wing or center, PK and would play more PP if guys like Meier, Hughes Hischier, Bratt, Tofoli weren't absolutely nasty
Swayman would have to win the Vezina (not just have the potential to do it) to be worth a top 6 22yr old center\wing

But that's just my opinion, anyway have a good day!

Absolutely he is, it's not really close between them
You win cups with guys like Mercer, you can win a cup with goalies like Niemi, Kuemper, Murray etc

Kuemper was great until he got injured and Colorado is lucky they were healthy. Otherwise, they likely don't win with that level of goaltending. Murray played like a #1 in both runs, he then got worse. You're overrating a 2nd liner.

Devils are sure looking great in the standings while having "anyone" in net, right?

Mercer is going to get a similar contract to Swayman despite mercer's contract buying up less UFA years. The market shows the value

Interested to see what happens in 2-3 years... the Devils are going to have a hard time retaining Hughes, Nemec, Mercer, Holtz, and address goaltending at the same time. Feel like one of those guys gets moved for future assets/a goalie.

2 less games played and 2 points out of the wild card, yeah they're doing just fine in the standings

Most teams that win the cup are ''Lucky'' to be healthy in the playoffs, there are more examples of good goalies that win cups, you don't need Vezina caliber or Vezina potential to win the cup

You say 2nd liner but, on Boston he'd be the 3rd best forward and #1 center.

Last year, everyone wanted Holtz+1st (as really the price for everything) while simultaneously saying, “Holtz doesn’t look good”.

This year, same, but with Mercer.

So…how about Haula or Toffoli instead? They look good. And we wouldn’t want to burden another team with our dreadful, busted up prospects.

Holtz should get a reasonable bridge deal. As a winger I don’t think he gets too expensive.

Mercer I’d like to convince to sign a 6millx8 year deal.

Hughes if we can get on an 8x8 extension this offseason would make me a happy man

And if Nemec slides again his contract won’t be an issue until after the 26-27 season

I think Mercer is going to want to hit the market again before he is 30 given his current trajectory - bridge deals are getting increasingly rarer, but he would seem to be a good candidate for one. I think $6M AAV for 3-4 years is more realistic for Mercer.

Holtz I could see getting a shade under that given his draft pedigree and if he continues to produce.

Don't think Nemec continues to slide given Hamilton's injury.

Lol this is just asinine...

Swayman: 94 Starts 62 Wins 2.23 GAA .921 SV% 11 Shutouts
Goalie A: 146 Starts 87 Wins 2.43 GAA .916 SV% 8 Shutouts
Goalie B: 147 Starts 75 Wins 2.41 GAA .923 SV% 18 Shutouts

Guess who A and B are... any way you cut it Swayman is a top goalie in the league.

No doubt he's good and I'd bet on him being successful as a starter for another team but, he hasn't been a starter and he's a much bigger risk
He has backed up on the best regular season team in the NHL the last year and a quarter and has a GAA over 3 and save % below 870 in his 8 playoff apperances of which he started 6 and Bruins only won 3

Mercer is 21 right now. Even on an 8 year deal he hits the market at 30.

If you think a 21 year old Mercer gets 6 mill for his RFA years, then you’re admitting he’s a significantly more valuable player than Swayman. unless you’re planning on giving swayman 8x4 (since a 4 year deal on swayman buys out 2 UFA years

Holtz is still raw defensively. Again with his RFA years I don’t see him getting more than 3 mill on a bridge. And if he gets to the point where he IS worth that much on a bridge as an RFA, then that means his trade value is also sky high

That’s kind of a generalized statement.

You can win cups with healthy goaltenders that aren’t great if you have a phenomenal defensive structure. That’s been shown, but most teams chiming in that they can win with mediocre goaltending don’t have that structure and fail miserably. NJ is going to get to see this season if Vanecek and Schmid is good enough. Schmid showed some interesting potential last year

Either way, the package above doesn’t warrant Ullmark and won’t get him

Mercer is actually 22 right now.

Mercer put up 56 points as a 21 year old... if he can hit 65-70 points (not currently on pace due a slow start) in his 22 year old season I think he'll break the $6M mark. He'll probably be looking in the range of either a 3 year bridge deal or a 5 or 6 year deal to let him hit the market when he is 27/28 and maximize his career earnings.

I think Bruins will sign Swayman to a long-term deal around $6M AAV this off-season. Goalies A and B in the comparables are Oettinger and Sorokin. Swayman is a top goaltender in the league.
