The Only EK trade that makes sense

Description
If the pens get EK, yes it will be a 3 team trade however, the 3rd team WILL NOT be retaining salary on EK and will only be there to take on Jeff Petry. I have seen way to many ACGM having a 3rd team retaining money on EK and it makes no sense.

  1. Karlsson, Erik (3 000 000 $ retained)
Détails additionnels:
Sharks retain 26% of EK contract, reports are that they want to retain 20% or so, Dubas gets the Sharks to retain a extra 700k.

Détails additionnels:
Granlund is money going back. Someone who can play in their top 6 and hopefully for them regain some trade value or be useful haha.

Ty Smith, former 1st round pick, hes a great skater, puck moving OFD who can QB the PP replacing EK, he can play both the left and right side and would give the sharks some much needed offense on the back end after moving EK.

Sergei Murashov, He's looking like a solid goaltending prospect, he did very well in the MHL and in his lone KHL start.

2024 1st, top 5 protected

Now is this a great return, no it isn't. however unless the Sharks retain 50% they won't be getting a kings ransom for EK. To me this is about the return we will see for EK.

    Détails additionnels:
Petry is obviously the odd man out if EK is going to be a penguin. Chicago makes the most sense to be the 3rd team involved they have cap space and Chicago is close to Petry's home. Chicago can also then flip him at the deadline if they want at 50% in order to gain more assets to build around Bedard.

Basing the trade around the Cal Petersen and Sean Walker cap dump (7.65mil). (2nd and Grans). To me Petry is better than both players that went to Philly and still holds some value and like I mentioned, Petry can easily be flipped at the deadline to a contender at 50% for even more assets.

I saw this and braced myself for another EK retention discussion. This does make sense and I think Chicago probably accepts. Based on the amount still owed, they may ask for more but to me this makes sense.

    Blomqvist instead of Murashov and a 2025 1st instead of a 2025 3rd and it's a deal.

ya I keep seing other ACGM that have a 3rd team retain, to me it would only make sense if EK had 1 or 2 season left on his deal not 4. the 3rd team that will be involved if this trade goes down is just to take on Petry and not to retain on EK

then you can keep EK. I would be willing to switch out Murashov for Blomqvist, however I would not pay nor should any team pay 2 1st for EK unless the sharks are retaining 50% which they have made known that they won't retain that much or even close to that. This is most likely a very similar return to what the Sharks will get for EK. IF/When EK is traded, I got a feeling we will be seing alot of Sharks fans saying it's a under whelming return.

Hawks are going to want more than a 2nd to take Petry.

I doubt it, hes not a negative asset and has some value, pens would just need to clear his cap, See the Taylor Hall trade except here they also get a 2nd

I think PIT is maybe a bit optimistic in having Smith be the "prospect" they give up but this is very reasonable overall. I completely agree that a 3rd team is only going to be involved as a spot for Petry, and it's what Freidman has been reporting the entire time too

They needed a someone to play with Bedard and get to the cap floor. Chicago is over the cap floor now and has no need for Petry. A 2nd isn't enough to take on 12+ million in salary for a player they have no use for.

See the Josh Bailey trade. A 2nd for one year @ $5m cap hit and $3.5m actual salary. And Hawks needed Hall to play w/ Bedard. They don't need a $6m 3rd pair RD. Hawks might be willing to take Petry, but it definitely takes more than a 2nd. Probably another 2nd or a 3rd.

Murashov looks solid and is years younger. I would be just fine with him

I respectfully disagree, $6.25m for the next two seasons and the $$ payout being the same for Petry means at least one 1st round pick and the equivalent of a second 1st round pick which could be a combination of prospects and picks.

If the Penguins are willing to take a bad contract back (I.e. last year of Zaitsev) to lessen the cap hit then the price could come down.

I should have also stated that this is dependent on Richardson and Petry's relationship in Montréal. If Richardson feels he's another great locker room guy then it's worth settling for a 2nd. I don't think the amount hurts the Hawks in any way so he could be making $12M but if the net positive is team growth plus draft capital, I make the trade.
