They are all comparables still. You'd struggle to find a comparable that returned a nemec rated prospect ALONE

Alexei Yashin returned the #2 pick (Spezza was very highly touted), as well as a young Chara. Peter Forsberg, Filip Forsberg, and Erik Brannstrom were all very high rated prospects that were traded. Nick Suzuki I believe was pretty highly rated when he was traded. Oleg Tverdovsky and Chad Kilger (although both had played in the NHL but they were 19/20 when they were traded) were moved in the same trade. Wade Redden and Bryan Berard were traded for each other before playing an NHL game. In the late 80s in back to back years the Penguins traded prospects they had selected in the top 5 just months after drafting them

Jason Spezza (technically the #2 pick at the draft), Peter Forsberg, Filip Forsberg, Brayden Schenn, Mikhail Sergachev, Erik Brannstrom, Tuukka Rask, Wade Redden, Bryan Berard, Oleg Tverdovsky, Chad Kilger, Nick Suzuki, Chris Joseph, Darin Shannon were all high end prospects that were traded

perfect lets go with the spezza example. 2nd + a young roster dman for young teemu selanne. so Nemec and Bahl, nothing else.

Lindros trade package would be a comparable if you were trading Bedard.

Schenn was a lower regarded prospect, still reterned 2 1sts.

Sergachev also a lower rated prospect and was still traded for a 53 point 21 year old

Nick Suzuki again a lower rated prospect

Berard demanded a trade and so traded for the number 2 pick. Meaningless.

Rask another lower rated prospect

Brannstrom again not the same tier of prospect.

Forsberg again not the same level of prospect

In addition anything pre salary cap era is irrelevant, as the salary cap is why ELC's and RFA years are so valuable.

Spezza was traded for Yashin not Selanne. So the #2 pick and a young roster player for a disgruntled player that wanted out and a new expensive contract, that was also 4 years older than Hughes currently is

Schenn was very highly regarded and was traded with a 23 year old 2nd line power forward Simmonds and a 2nd round pick for Mike Richards, who was a good player but wouldn’t be as valuable as Hughes

Sergachev returned Drouin, who many expected to be a superstar

Suzuki is still a comparable, and he was traded with a 2nd and Tatar (who’s value was kinda weird at the time considering what Vegas gave up for him but then never really used him) for Pacioretty

Forsberg was one of the top prospects in the league. To this day I still don’t understand how he only returned Erat. Everybody knew it was a fleecing when it happened

Ahh sorry, mixed up with another deal. Yashin who finished 2nd and 14th in hart voting his 2 seasons before being traded.

Suzuki is a tier below Nemec as a prospect. You can use him as a comparable to Alex Holtz if you want tho.

Schenn again, tier below Nemec. Again more comparable to Holtz.

Forsberg still below Nemec, but the closest. And that trade doesn't provide any baseline due to how laughable it was.

All these comparables, along with many others, suggest it's Alex Holtz you're looking at as the centerpiece of a trade for a star/superstar

Thing is the players that they were the centrepiece of a trade for were all a tier below Hughes, apart from Yashin (although he was older and in a contract dispute, so you could argue he didn’t have as much value as Hughes would)

Eichel requested a trade and needed neck surgery. Hughes is more valuable

Karlsson was 28 and had one year left on his deal. And that trade was seen as a huge underpayment at the time as well

Tkachuk‘s return was bigger than the proposed offer here after he refused to sign and requested a trade. Can argue that Hughes is more valuable, or at least has the same value

Stone was a pending UFA winger that was older. Hughes is more valuable

Eichel was a top 8 in hart voting and plays a much more valuable position than LD.
I never said the proposed offer was more than the tkachuk return.

You stated nemec and mercer.

The surplus value on Huberdeau and Weegar is probably less than 1 of Nemec OR mercer, let alone both

But if you want your Huberdeau Weegar offer, take Palat+Hamilton+1st. Heck we'll throw in casey to match the difference between weegar and Palat

Eichel only played 21 games the season before his trade and needed neck surgery. He was a huge risk and it was known he wasn’t going to play for Buffalo again. The Sabres had no leverage while the Canucks would have all the leverage in a Hughes trade

The difference between Huberdeau and Palat is a much bigger difference than the one between Hamilton and Weegar. And the Canucks more than likely wouldn’t want that type of return since trading Hughes means they’d be rebuilding. But if they did, Bratt/Meier would be the Huberdeau piece not Palat

Meier/Bratt are mid 20s. They are worth more than huberdeau was. The huberdeau comp is an expensive aging star.

Huberdeau=Hamilton (tbh bc of the 8 year deal they had to sign huberdeau to hamilton is probably more valuable)
Positionally 2RD doesn't make sense (but a 3rd team could be added to switch it) but value wise Marino>Weegar.).

Hamilton, Marino, no 1st.
