Description
buying OEL out

The Canucks have too many young players to fit into the lineup. Therefore I thought it'd make sense to move Rathbone and Podkolzin out.
Their upside is rather limited at this point in time but they are cheap, young and have some more room to grow. Boston send cap they could do without back to Vancouver which improves the team.
I think the trade is fairish and fills needs for both teams.
I wouldn't argue too much if someone felt that the Canucks aren't giving up enough in either trade.

This team is decent. With a little luck they could make it into the playoffs and perhaps win a round.

future 2nd + moving back one round seem kinda reasonable for dumping that putrid 6m worth of Myers's cap. 1m in real money cash outlay for the yotes and this move helps them get over the cap floor

Smallest top 4 in league history.

Also hate how as Canucks we toss around 2nd rounders like theyre candy and yet we can't seem to ever get anyone to give us a 2nd for anything we have.

Van wouldn’t do either of those. Myers takes a 4th to dump and Vancouver can’t take back that salary unless they also move Boeser. Not to mention they don’t need an overpaid 3rd pairing d man the second they get rid of OEL

Vancouver shouldn't be the team going after Gryz. Not with another small guy already on the top pairing.

Myers will take a first or high second to dump. Look at the monahan trade

No he won’t, he’s not injured every 5 games, after his bonus is paid he’s only owed 1m in real money with a 6m cap hit which teams like Arizona or Chicago will be all over and he’s a rhd which is a position that has the most value in hockey, sure he’s not great but someone will take a chance on him even if only to flip at the deadline and get an extra pick

The actual money doesn’t matter. Teams know what his cap hit is and they will weight their offers based on that. No one’s taking him for free

A fourth is completely free. A fourth is what you get when you retain like 1 million at the trade deadline as a 3rd party. It will take a pick in the 20-40 range to move him, thinking anything else is delusional. This guy is barely NHL caliber let’s be real

skill > size, we aren't in the 90s any longer.
A Grzelcyk - Hronek pairing would be a well above average 2nd pair compared to the rest of the league.
If the Canucks can buy low on him they shouldn't hesitate to take that chance.

As for the 2nds, they are a convenient asset to buy stuff with, be it Jason Dickinson, Tyler Toffoli or part of dumping cap / paying for the OEL contract.
The going rate for dumping 6m+ in stupidly bad cap is about a 1st rd pick or close to that in value, if anything I'm suggesting the Canucks getting off easy in that Myers deal.

It's fine if you don't think Pod and Rathbone aren't suitable pieces for Boston but there's no way the Canucks would offer Räty in this type of deal.
Going by how eager Bruins fans on here are to move cap out for the 23/24 season I'd think this deal to be reasonably close though.

I'd be amazed if all it took to move Myers is to pay a mid rd pick, I can't see any team doing the Canucks such a favour.
What's the problem with taking on Hall? If he were to be made available for trade he could be had for some of the assets VAN have in excess (limited upside wingers and LHD) and it'd only be two years of cap commitment. He's a good player and improves this team.

Who is the overpaid Dman cus I don't see anyone that's overpaid on that D corps.
3.7m is good value for Grzelcyk and he only carries one year on that cap hit.
One of Truscott, Pettersson or Johansson would hopefully develop well enough to be able to step into that spot in one year's time.
Same goes for Ian Cole, getting him at below 2.5m would be great value for the Canucks.

Problem with this here is that you actually have to be somewhat good at the NHL level to have any value whatsoever, and that also goes for RHD.
Myers is one of the weakest defenders in the league and that 6m is actively holding the Canucks back from being as competitive as they'd like.

Again, no team is gonna do the Canucks any favours and it's only down to the 1m real money cash outlay that I'm suggesting that 2025 2nd is all it's gonna take for Arizona to bite on Myers.
Even then, it's a very optimistic suggestion that I'm making.

I know it’s clever to say it’s not the 90s anymore…but as someone who used to believe like you do…the playoffs are different. Against some teams you need to protect your small guys in a 7 game series. And protecting two pairings isn’t possible. 7 game series are just different vs 82 games. It’s not just the intensity it’s trying to expose other teams potential weakness. And when the Bruins had both Gryz and Krug it happened a lot.

A team can carry a few smaller guys but not 4 of your top 5. You know the big guys are skilled too nowadays. I think I know what youre getting at but you still need size in the NHL. We see it in the playoffs every yr. Look at Vegas as a perfect example.

As for 2nds they are not just a convenient asset to buy stuff with as you suggested. They are an asset to build organizational depth with. Other teams rightly don't trade them for short term solutions unless theyre trying to win a cup. As for the cap dump of Myers, each cap dump has it's own set of parameters so I don't know if you could really say what the going rate is. I could make a strong case of why Myers would have some appeal to a number of teams.
