Almost an early 2nd... But yeah, to get the player you are sure about.

What makes you think SJ does this in order to get whats basically a 2nd? I mean whats in it for SJ.

Ill be honest, it isnt even close.

I mean they get a late 1st, even if you consider it an early 2nd the price to move up one spot in the draft especially when remaining in the same skill teir is typically a 3rd round pick. So, you ask what SJ gets, they get a player within the same skill teir and an overpayment to move back a single spot and probably the 2nd best player in the draft. That is a hell of a lot of incentive.

Sure it is. It is more or less in the range of what it would cost IF your GM is open to it. I believe he said he was for the right package.

According to a chart of the value of a draft pick that I found (only kept the image, not the link unfortunately):

#4: 100 points
vs
#5: 90 points
#32: 21 points

FWIW. Maybe someone has another chart to compare this with.

I believe this is the chart you are referring to

https://montrealhockeynow.com/2022/06/06/nhl-draft-the-cost-of-moving-up-in-the-nhl-draft/

As you see it has 4th at 100 points, 5th at 90 points and pick number 52 is 10 points. Therefore using this table you have an approximate value of 5th + 52 for 4th, so it only takes a late 2nd round pick to move up 1 spot. Now looking at this table we can also see that to move up to 3rd the approximate value is 30 points or the 32 + 52 pick. Having said all this, the issue is really more about convincing those teams to move back than about the actual value of the pick.

Theoretically speaking, yes it's an overpayment. On the other hand the overpayment can be used by MTL as an argument to support the attractiveness of the trade for SJS, especially if the player selected at 4OA will have a material impact on the franchise for the next 10+ years.

In the very specific situation where SJ is OK either of 2 players, then it makes sense for them to dish out the 4thOA for 5thOA for more assets. Otherwise it doesn't make sense for SJ or MTL.
Example 1: If SJ and MTL are competing for the same player then no, a very late 1st is not enough to entice SJ to give up that pick. If Carlsson is gone, and SJ doesn't want to take the chance on Michkov, they'll likely go for Smith, then MTL is not getting Smith unless they offer more for the trade.
Example 2: If SJ and MTL want completely different players at 4 & 5, then it doesn't make sense for MTL to give up anything as they can just make their 5thOA pick and everything is happy.

Just don't see Grier moving the pick at all

"I won't rule anything out," General Manager Mike Grier said. "I think there'd have to be a pretty significant offer to move out of four, but you never know what happens when you get close to the draft. If there's a player another team really likes, we'll listen. But it would take a lot."
