Description
I feel like at least half of these are somewhat do-able for both sides. I have no idea what Seattle would be willing to give for Karlsson, but, personally, I feel like Karlsson at 8 mil would be worth a former 35th ovr, 20th ovr, third rd pick, and a future second. Like I say below, I wanted to include a 1 year cap dump for Seattle too but did not know who to include.

I really have no idea if any of these would work, or what other teams would be willing to do but this is my guess. I’ve seen that TOR wants to move Murray so I included that here as a reasonable deal. I do not think that a Murray cap dump could get a 1st so I included a more reasonable package. For the PIT trade, I’ve seen speculation about trying to clear some cap space to sign someone like Bertuzzi or something like that. I through back a cheap PK killing master in Sturm who plays a good 2 way game. Figured I’d throw in their 1st for the CAP dump and getting a good player/contract with sturm. I did not think that this was quite fair (despite PIT not needed draft picks now, as it would not help with the Malkin/Crosby window) so I included the sharks 3rd on the way back. I’ve seen blues fans theorizing with Ferraro, so included their first in the way back, as Ferraro is a good top 4 d man who brings a good style of leadership. I did not think that this would adequate of a 1st still so I included a 3rd and 4th back. Next is the Isles trade, where Josh Bailey is traded for Kevin LaBanc. LaBanc gets to go home to NY, and get a fresh start on a new team. I have NYI paying for this as LaBanc is on a slightly lower cap hit with more points, higher skill (I believe) and a younger age. I also have BUF trading for a cheap and great player in Barabanov. I have them trading this years 3rd, and a 2025 2nd (which will most likely be a high 50s pick). I think that this is worth it for a somewhat young 45+ point player on a cheap contract, who scored those points while playing on a horrible team. Lastly, I have DET trading up to pick #20 in the draft this year for pick 42 and 43, they can pick someone like Gulayev or Simashev with this pick, or someone who is a high skill potential player who is falling (that I’ve seen DET fans say that they need another high skill potential player, this covers that to an extent I believe. )

The islanders probably aren’t trading the 2023 2nd round pick, due to the fact they already dealt their 2023 1st and 3rd round picks. Also if the isles trade bailey they r doing so in order to clear cap space, so trading for Labanc doesn’t make sense anyway.

That’s completely fair, I didn’t see that they traded their 1st, however, now that I think about it I do remember that trade. Do you think that a 3rd would be a fair deal or no?

The isles will pay to dump Bailey just as the sharks would have to pay to dump Labanc. Bailey produces as the same rate and has had better seasons than Labanc , in no way would the isles add anything in a 1 for 1 trade.

I doubt the Blues would trade a 23 1st for Ferraro. Maaaaybe a 24 1st. But they need to offload an LD first anyway.

That’s understandable, I tried to throw in the 3rd and 4th rounders to try and offset this, is there anyone that the blues would try to get rid of at that LD position?

Krug and/or Leddy, but it seems unlikely Krug would waive for the Bay Area.

Trading 20 for 42 and 43 is a big drop in value. Draftprospects.com has 20 at 6250 points and 42 and 43 combine for 3950

The closest player Seattle has to a cap dump is Driedger. A change of scenery might be a good way for him to re-establish himself as a viable NHL goalie, as he's a bit of a question mark right now.

If Seattle trades for Karlsson he'd be supplanting Justin Schultz both on the right side of the defense and on the power play, meaning Schultz would also likely be on the move. However since Schultz has positive value Seattle would be able to get assets from a contending team, so he doesn't really fit the idea of a cap dump you're looking for. Ultimately trading for Karlsson is a big risk due to his age, term, and cap hit, even with the retained salary. Whether the Kraken make a move for Karlsson will ultimately depend on whether the offensive boost is worth that risk along with the trade cost.

I don't think it's a horrible deal for PIT, but Granlund's buyout is so manageable ( <900k this yr) I think they would much rather move 14 for a top 6F or top 4D

That’s kind of what I was thinking too, I looked at a coupon draft value charts and some of them had the 2 2nds higher, some had it the same, and some had it as lower value. I just added a 6th to it because I feel like this years draft is extremely deep, and that there are a lot of players that can be picked intermittently between 20-45 that could all be as good or better than each other.

Okay that makes sense. I think that while I love that SEA is doing, I think that a star like Karlsson would greatly bolster both their even strength points, and PP points. SEA also has a couple cut down defenders that I think Karlsson could pair well with. While it may not be the perfect solution, I think that Karlsson could add some great star power to their roster that they don’t really have right now. I don’t know if that’s SEA’s solution, but he would do great there I believe. I think (as a biased sharks fan) that they should take a swing on it, however, like you said, the deal is risky because his contract length and age, even for 8 million.

Although you got pushback from fans of other teams, you did a good job at crafting these trades. Most are approaching fair value, which can't be said of a lot of ACGMs.

I wonder if GMMG is plotting a rebuild like this (i.e. tear it all down for max picks) or whether he tries to slowly turn things around. A Karlsson trade and what we do at goaltender will answer that question.

Thank you! I appreciate it.

And I really hope that he is trying to do something like this. Flipping Karl for some good assets and hopefully fixing our goal development system should go a long long way to helping our team in the future.
